I think this season is taking more heat than it would had season two not been so brutally awful. It's much better this season but still not as good as it could be, but it suffers from the black mark that was season two.

The writing is still pretty lousy. I completely agree w/eagles that this show (these writers) are completely missing on each opportunity to expand on the potential commentary that could take the show to the next level for the viewers. It's especially sad because they do a decent job of generating and introducing these elements (as mentioned) and then let it fall by the wayside.

I think the comment about the writers being a group fresh out of Intro to Writing sums it up pretty well.

Some are going to say "for the comedic value LOLZ" but you complain much more than say that anything is funny.
1. That's not true.

2. The show is oftentimes so bad it's good.

3. People watch the show because it has potential to be amazing.

Season 1 was really good. It was only 6 episodes and every episode had a lot going on in it. Outside of Rick, there wasn't a lot of character development, but that was fine because there was SO MUCH going on in every episode.

Season 2 ******* sucked. 3 things happened in that season. Carl got shot, Shane turned heel (officially), and Rick killed Shane. Literally nothing else happened. The show was awful to watch, but entertaining for the "Where's Carl?" bits, seeing how bad Lori could possibly be, Carl faces, and "where's Carl?" bits.

They listened to the fans and fixed the problems with Season 2 for Season 3. They killed off the worst character, muted the second-worst character (Carl), and changed the fourth-worst character (Carol). A lot of stuff happened in the first half of the season. Aside from the last episode, Andrea, and Rick going crazy (pointless plot line) this season has been a very good show.

Everything about Sunday's episode was awful, though. The cause was it was an Andrea-centric show. The worst character - by far (although it seems Carol is sneaking back into the terrible territory after reaching a tolerable state).

Carl hasn't bothered me at all this season.

Andrea needs to die. I don't care if she's turned heel or whatever. She's been proven to be a complete ******* moron every time she is on the screen. Stupid people don't survive the apocalypse like that.

It doesn't resonate with anyone.

Also, I'm tired of poorly written female leads in otherwise decent shows. Breaking Bad and Walking Dead come to mind, but it's pretty prevalent.

It's a tough call, but my guess is the writers don't want you to cheer for the Governor. They simply continue to fail miserably at making you like anyone else enough to do otherwise.
I think if any writer is worth their salt, they make you sometimes like, but at least respect the antagonist(s) in the story, and in some ways I do respect the governor, which is where I'll cut the writers some slack. But it leads back to where they failed to capitalize on what could've been valuable information on him (I'm referring to his secret that he kept) and why he is the way he is.

I don't know whether or not the writers want me to cheer for the governor or not, but unless its up against Rick and crew, I find myself hoping he and his men get what they want, as it'll make whatever conflict(s) with Rick and his crew that much more interesting.

I touched on that bolded part when I first brought this up and then kinda forgot about it, when you have an entire episode (also coinciding with the Oscars or Academy Awards or whatever), focusing on a character most don't like, chances are it'll be seen as sub-par unless you find other ways to enrich it.

Brodeur was being snarky and I replied in kind. ;)

Honestly, I think the Governor is the only character the show has portrayed well. It's clear he's a charismatic badass with a dark side. Darryl, Merle, and Herschel are the other guys I can't really complain about at this point.

The governor is portrayed well compared to most of the rest of the cast, and I like what has been done with Herschel, but I do still think that both Darryl and Merle could use more development. They are able to get by based off their sheer badassery, but both could use more work. Darryl has been worked on a lot, and I like what they've done with him, but they could still do a lot more, and the next few episodes are going to go a long way in determining what the writers will be able do with Merle. There is a real opportunity for character development for Merle the rest of the season, and the writers need to capitalize on it. I'm also interested to see how they continue Carl's growth. They may be limited by the actor's ability some, but I'm hoping the kid evolves as an actor as the series continues, too (wishful thinking?), so we can get some quality out of his character beyond being a badass kid. I also want more Milton, and I think there are opportunities to showcase him as the conflict between the two parties escalates. We'll just have to see where it goes.

I think Darryl and Merle are the currect focus for development with what we've seen in the last two episodes. That's why I'm ok with them right now. The dynamic is what will push the character development for both. All we have to do is hope the writers don't flop. That's not too much to ask, right?

Well, I hope so, you could see they were kinda beginning to do it with Merle, particularly with the last two episodes, but I'm not sure if its the beginning or if the writers will start it and then coast through the rest of it like they seem to.

I could see these hacks calling it complete after the two episode "development."

WriterA: Merle's done, right?
WriterB: Well, we had him say "I was just following orders, right?"
WriterC: And we had Herschel mention his military background. So, yeah, we're good with Merle. Who's next?

I actually like what they've done with Merle so far. The character has been very consistent and his changes have been consistent with who Merle is. That's the one character, other than Shane, that they've been consistent with and have done a good job developing.

This writing staff seems to excel at writing strong-ish, stubborn pseudo-heels that fear being left alone. Shane and Merle are the same character. The difference is that Merle changed so he could have what he wanted (Daryl) and Shane couldn't have what he wanted.

I don't think we're done with Morgan just yet.

Okay, I have not read the comics, seen this episode or the past few weeks, and I very much like Lennie James. But I think I would have liked if we never saw Morgan again.

Morgan is by far the best actor that show ever had and will have.

You're probably right, but Rick is also played by a damn good actor...

So, tonight's episode was kind of emotional.

Yup. There are some bad actors on this show, but there are also some really good ones. We got a taste, tonight, of what the show can be like when only characters played by good actors are featured. Tonight I was reminded why I was so enthralled with Season 1.

The show has done a great job listening to fans and adjusting the show for the better. Hopefully Season 4 will see an end to Andrea, and a re-focusing toward the characters that are worth a crap. The show is almost good. Last week's episode was kind of a good thing. We saw what was wrong with the show. It's simply one character.
