Default Week 9, Packers @ Chargers

Packers coming off a Bye whereas the Chargers played on a short week and had to go to OT

Chargers have now lost back to back games they probably should have won, so you figure they'll be geared up this Sunday...especially vs the undefeated champs.

McCarthy said he'll have an update on Clifton/Neal Wednesday, but said both were "doing better" which is vague as sh*t when it comes to McCarthy

Clifton still a few weeks out. Neal could be back at practice next week. Not holding my breath at this point, but would be nice to get some reinforcements along the D-line.

I'm flying out to San Diego on Saturday for this game.
Will post pictures next week after I get back.

I expect San Diego's absolute desperate best.
If we play our B or A game, Packers win 37-24.

Yeah, apparently he's almost done with his rehab and should be cleared to practice. PRoblem is, since he's missed the entire season + missed nearly all of training camp, I doubt we see him even get on the field until Week 12-13 at the earliest. Dude's probably nowhere near game shape. Even then he'll likely be eased back in. Hopefully he'll be ready to go full time by the time the playoffs start. That'd be a nice fresh body on the front lines

As far as Clifton goes, if Newhouse continues to play well...I don't see how they just insert Clifton back as the starter when he returns. It wasn't like Clifton was doing that great this year anyway. At the very least though, if he does return at the end fo the year, he'll help add quality depth to the OL again

Good point on Newhouse. He has the makings of becoming a solid franchize LT, perhaps.
And then there's still Derek Sherrod. We look great at that position with Bulaga too.

What do you do if all 3 pan out? Move Bulaga inside?
Or trade one of them for another 1st round pick?
All good options to have. I hope we face that "problem" in a year or so.

Some facts & figures on Rodgers, from Reischel:

Passer rating: Through 7 games, Rodgers has a passer rating of 125.7, which would break Peyton Manning's single-season mark he set in 2004. Remarkably, Rodgers' lowest rating in a game this season was 111.4 at Chicago in Week 3, in which he had an interception that Urlacher snatched, and which knocked off about 10 from his passer rating that game.

Completion percentage: Rodgers has connected on 71.5% of his passes, which would break Drew Brees' single-season mark of 70.6% set in 2009. It would also break Brett Favre's team record of 66.5% set in 2007.

Touchdowns: Rodgers leads the NFL with 20 touchdown passes and is on pace to throw 46 TDs. That mark would break Favre's single-season Packers' mark of 39 set in 1996 and rank fourth all time.

Yards: Rodgers is on pace to throw for 5,422 yards, which would shatter Dan Marino's NFL record of 5,084 set in 1984, and Lynn Dickey's Green Bay record of 4,458 set in 1983. Brees is on pace for 5,492, and he and Rodgers could have an interesting race down the stretch.

In addition, Rodgers is averaging an NFL-best 9.92 yards per passing attempt and has thrown just 3 interceptions (2 of which were off receivers hands).

Green Bay may be putting on the field the most efficient passing attack in NFL history. The Packers currently have an 81.8 percent pass offense DVOA, which means that their passing game has been 81.8 percent more efficient than the average passing game of the past decade. We have DVOA ratings going back to 1992, and in that 20-year span, Green Bay has the highest rating for any pass offense through eight weeks of a season, just ahead of the 2007 Patriots, who were at 80.0 percent. Aaron Rodgers is on pace to set all-time records for yardage, passer rating and completion percentage.

If the final 8 weeks are a mirror of the first 8 weeks, certainly.
But nothing stays the same, everything changes, adapts, evolves.

Weather in November, December, and January (game vs Detroit) will not be the same.

We're due for some bumps & bruises on offense.

I would not be shocked if we have a stumble or two along the way. Even Farve had some in his 3-year MVP run of 1996, 97, 98.

Look for a big game from J-Mike this week.
Now's a good time to trade FOR him in your FFL.

8-0 is great, but this D is gonna be costly come playoff time. HAving an elite offense is great and all, but the D needs to stop teams. 2nd great offense they have faced and they gave up 38. Gave up 34 to the Saints in week 1. I cannot believe all the mis-communication by the D today. Guys were left WIDE OPEN and DB's looked confused. WTF

the pass rush again is the main culprit. They simply have none. Having an elite offense didn't help the 04 Colts or 07 Pats win it all. The D needs to make some serious improvements and fast. Ridiculous to see them nearly blow a 21 point lead in the 4th. Gave up 14 points in about 4 minutes

Only thing this D has going for it is that they force a lot of turnovers.

I don't know who looked at the film and decided that matching Bishop man2man on Gates was a good idea, but they should have tossed that gameplan in the trash quickly.

After the first drive they did a decent job against the run.

Again it seams like Capers is content to play coverage with a lead. Very little pressure on Rivers in the 4th quarter.

- Rodgers is incredible
- Starks is a beast
- Walden had his best game of the year
- Hawk's coverage has to be the worst in the league
- Tramon had his pick six but outside of that had a troubling game

Hawk was horrible today. Packers really should have kept Barnett over Hawk. Had 2 weeks to prepare and the D still looked this bad

I have very little faith in them and worry about them come playoff time

correct, correct, correct....... i was at the game and able to focus on the trenches..... nobody gets pressure from the DL position. cullen jenkins was the best in the NFL last year and we had him. it helped a lot.

watching the chargers DL, they got a lot of pressure, and big hits, sacks, on rodgers. tommie harris beat sitton or sitton & wells a number of times.

we don't get that from raji, wynn, wilson, pickett, green... anyone. i thought wilson was supposed to exel in that area but he's not.

rodgers was playing with fire yesterday, taking sacks that he didn't need to.
he scared the hell out of me there, because he could get hurt easlily on any of those. from a ankle like sam bradford had to much worse like brady, palmer, or God forbid, theisman had.

i love his high completion percentage and low int percentage, but i'd rather him throw them at the receivers feet vacinity than take a sack.

Some sights & sounds I took from this game. I have some of the huge tailgating party before the game too.

These give you an indication of how Lambeau-like this place was yesterday!
It was awesome.

The defense definitely fell apart there at the end (and wasnt much better earlier) but.... the game would have been alot different if Jordy would have just caught the onside kick. There was only about 6:30 left up 2 scores or 3?... anyways if we would have recovered it we could have A. burned clock, up atleast 2 scores B.get a FG atleast beginning practically in FG range C. Worst case 3 and out, punt with roughly 4:30 and pinned them deep.

We really shouldn't of let Jenkins go! He was the only one that could get a pass rush on the d-line and now if we want to get a pass rush we need to send about 10 guys. Clay Matthews is getting bullied every time because no one else has a chance of getting to the quarterback. I don't know what we gained by letting him go but without him we are ******

I know it's become almost sacreligious to question any move made by our fantastic GM, but you are correct.
I believe Ted, Mike, and Dom would all agree to that right now that it was erroneous, all things considered.

Now, that doesn't mean we won't still win the Super Bowl though. But unless Neal gets and stays healthy, and produces, it might be the achilles heal that does prevent Pack-2-back rings.

Eh. I think everyone realizes that having Jenkins would probably make a difference. However, you can't use revisionist history to say we should have kept him.

Cullen wanted his big payday, probably more that he was worth. He ended up taking the Eagles deal because it was the best he could get from a contender.

IMO I think TT probably would have considered bringing him back for what he got with the Eagles, but by the time his true market value was established the bridge was burned.

5 years $25 million with what is in my understanding an out-clause after the first year? I think TT would have done that, but Jenkins only took that when the market dried up and by then the ship had sailed on re-signing him.

I dont see how thats true. If you get rid of someone early you could miss that player for longer than just one year but if you keep a player and he plays bad you just release him or trade him whenever you want. Now Jenkins is gone we cant get him back!

There is no telling what happens if they bring Jenkins back. Would they still be able to re-sign Nelson, Wells and Finley? Nelson has been given an extension obviously, which leaves just Wells and Finley as the 2 main upcoming FA's

with how excellent Wells has played this year, you figure they'll look to lock him up. Having Jenkins back would be nice, but I'm not even sure the loss of him is why the D has been so bad so far this year. The defense played fine last year in the games that Jenkins missed

the problem is that some guys just aren't having as good a year as they did last year. Tramon(he's been battling injury, however), Raji, Shields to an extent, Walden and C.J. Wilson have all not looked as good as last year. The loss of Jenkins has hurt the pass rush, but we are seeing a lot of mis-communication going on in the secondary which is something that just wasn't the case last year. Burnett has had a good year but he has been prone to some mental lapses, which is common for a young player. The loss of Nick Collins has definitely hurt a lot as well

Bright side is they are 8-0 and still have games to work out the kinks. The secondary is still good with a lot of ball hawks back there, they just need to get the communication issues sorted out..perhaps Capers can scale down the playcalling a bit and keep it a bit more simpler so we don't see these breakdowns. The one area that might not be able to be fixed is the pass rush. You kind of have the sense that it is what it is. This is the personnel they have and if they arent' getting the job done I don't know what else you can do. Hopefully Neal can help alleviate some things so that it can help Raji elevate his game, etc.

I'm not happy with the defensive play but they are still forcing a ton of turnovers and they are still stepping up when needed at the end of close games, which is a positive. I trust Capers and Co. to turn things around. Won't have the D of last year, but with this elite offense, they just need to get into the middle of the pack range as far as yards, TD's, points, etc.
