I think you need permission from the team unless it is for a head coaching gig.

Cowboys could promote Marinelli to DC. However from my understanding, he only works for Kiffin. If Kiffin finds a new job outside Tampa in NFL then Marinelli won't be with Smith. Who knows.

@JasonLaCanfora 1m
In addition to Josh McDaniels (NE), Dan Quinn (SEA), and Adam Gase (DEN), Browns asked for permission to interview Todd Bowles (AZ)

Bowles = Rooney rule.

I really don't understand the purpose of the Rooney Rule, given that the NFL is probably one of the best examples of a modern meritocracy.

And that is why Lovie Smith probably won't be going to Detroit. They would fire him before he even finished saying "Marinelli" for the first time.

NFL.com is reporting that Whisenhunt will not interview with the Texans now that the Chargers are in the playoffs because NFL rules bar the Texans from talking to him until next week. Genius.

Why would anyone want to go to Cleveland? If they are going to keep their assists in place why would a coach go there and not be able to put his own staff together. They are better off just promoting Horton or Norv if they plan on doing that.

They aren't allowed to steal Horton from me.

I think Ray Horton is a bit overrated for a head coaching position. He had a lot of talent to work with (Phil Taylor, Ahtyba Rubin, Desmond Bryant, Paul Kruger, Jabaal Sheard, D'Qwell Jackson, Joe Haden, T.J. Ward, etc.), and wasn't able to put together a defense that did well in any categories other than opposing passing yards allowed (eighth), which was probably due to opponents trying to run the ball and waste time to preserve victories.

The Browns recorded a lot of sacks, but were still well below-average in terms of points-per-game allowed (twenty-third), third-down efficiency (thirty-first), and red-zone efficiency (thirtieth.) Football Outsiders' weighted DVOA ranked them as the twenty-seventh-best defense. If you can't prevent opponents from converting on third down, scoring touchdowns in the red zone, and scoring points in general, I wouldn't consider that a particularly good defense.

Horton is not a type of coach that can overhaul part in no time. Since Browns got rid of Chud after one season, Horton is definitely out of question for HC job.

It would be hilarious if Bucs hired the entire coaching staff before finally finding GM.

Cleveland defense from 2012 to 2013:

PPG = 19 -> 23
3D% = 16 -> 31
RZ% = 24 -> 30
TO = 9 -> 26

That's not even progress, especially considering the Browns invested heavily in Bryant, Kruger, Mingo, etc. last offseason.

Kinda like the jets did?

Glazers didn't make this decision overnight. This was made with in the past few weeks. How do we not know a plan for gm and coach isn't in place?

The Browns defense fell off really hard in the second half of the season, and was absolutely miserable on third downs the entire year. I can't fathom who did worse than us on third downs and how that is even possible... I would have assumed we set a record for how bad we were on defense for third downs.

The Falcons were the worst defense on third down.

Maybe it is one of the best examples of a modern meritocracy, but I still think it has a ways to going to being a true meritocracy. The shortcoming really comes down to the owners, who rarely get their post via merit. In addition, there's very little turnover for owners. This results in a system where there a fair number of owners who honestly have no business managing a franchise, but nonetheless are rarely replaced. Which is exactly why we see the re-circulation of failed coaches, the premature firings of questionable coaches, and certain seemingly qualified candidates getting passed over for trivial reasons.

Stats can be very misleading when a team sucks on offense and the defense is on the field for the majority of the game. It is going to throw all defensive stats out of whack.

Not saying Horton is great or anything but stats aren't the whole story.

That's not even progress, especially considering the Browns invested heavily in Bryant, Kruger, Mingo, etc. last offseason.
So...BOWLES IT IS!

Mangini was hired before GM Bradway was demoted and Tannenbaum got promotion.

Bucs are HC/GM less team right now and the rumors had swirled around that Smith and his company are "set" to come to Tampa. No GM mentioned at all. That is why it is crazy to think Smith is the favorite before they have landed GM. In-house promotion? Who knows.

He signed a 3 year contract last season. Kiffin's contract was only for 1 year.

Sounds like both will be back in the same capacity. We shall see.
