Dwayne Allen Comparison
He is the clear cut top TE coming out this year and is projected top 2nd round maybe late 1st so I was hoping my Colts target him to give Andrew Luck a TE to thrive with.
Who does he compare to though? I have heard he is a great all around TE who has speed, route running ability, and is a very good blocker as well.

He reminds me of Ben Watson. Great athlete, good blocker, fine receiver with good hands, albeit not an elite pass catcher like we're used to seeing in Gates, Gonzalez, Graham, Gronk, etc.

Really, Watson? See I would have said he compares most to Antonio Gates. Has about the same size, and has the speed and route running to compare as well. Im not saying he will have the same career as Gates, but he just seems to compare favorably to him in my eyes.

I can see Kendricks. Isn't Kendricks a bit undersized though? Allen has pretty good size.

I'm not a huge fan, I think if your taking a TE in the 1st he should have the potential to be an elite player. I don't see Allen as much more than a slighly above league average player. I see him as having a Gresham like impact (who has disappointed me).

I really like Dwayne Allen. I also really liked Lance Kendricks last year, although he was kind of disappointing as a rookie this year. Still holding out some hope for him, though. I think Allen is bigger, though. Similar athletically. I think he's got more potential to get bigger than Kendricks, too. Looks like a guy who could pretty easily play at 260+, while Kendricks probably isn't ever going to be much bigger than he is. Kendricks was an ex-wide receiver, and looks like it, while Dwayne Allen is definitely built like a pure tight end.
Had a really nice game against Auburn:
Highlight moments at 1:40, 2:07, 3:18, 3:35, 6:09.

Davis is a better receiver. In terms of pure receiving skills, Davis is one of the best TEs in the NFL. Coming out of high school he was the #1 rated WR.

Allen's no slouch catching the ball. He's got good hands and catches it away from his body. Watch that Auburn video if you haven't seen it already. I like how he waits for the ball to get to him, then quickly reaches out and snatches it.

Maybe as receivers but Allen s 20x the blocker Kendricks will ever be
But that can be said about anyone who has actually blocked someone

Allen is a tough guy to think of comparisons for because he's a capable blocker and a playmaker as a receiver. Clemson used him all over the place too: split out wide, inline, in the slot, and as an H-Back.

I see a special player in Allen. Not buying the Lance Kendricks comparison.

Unless Allen has hands made of stone like Kendricks, then the two are not alike. Lance had so many disgusting drops this year that I have very little expectations going into next year. He has to get better catching the football and making an impact on a consistent basis.
