Default Bruce Irvin, DE / OLB, West Virginia

What positions do you think Bruce Irvin can play? I was intrigued by his projected measurables a couple of months ago, but seeing him run and in drills today, he looked very fluid and athletic.

Those of you who know the game better than I, can he play 4-3 DE? What LB positions can he play? WLB? 3-4 OLB?

As a Brows fan I'm most interested to hear about WLB and LDE. Our philosophy is to have smaller 255-265 pound DE's and bigger 325-335 pound DT's. Can he add 10 pounds and play LDE?

So, what do you guys think? When do you think he goes in the draft?

He can play DE in certain 4-3 systems, he can even drop in coverage and play WLB in 4-3, SLB in 4-3 and any of the OLB in the 3-4.

Ideally, you wouldn't want him to play WLB in a 4-3 because it'd eliminate nearly all his pass rush ability.

I've wanted him for the Titans for some time now

I would love to see Irvin in a role similar to that of Von Miller last year. He definitely has the speed and athleticism to create some mismatches.

I'd actually initially start him out in more of an Aldon Smith role. But yes people, join me on the train. He's a stud.

After seeing him on NFLN he still looks pretty lean at 245 and he seems to have room to grow. I was just looking up Matthews numbers from 2009 and he weighed 240 at the combine. Now plays at 250-255. If he wants to put in the time I think he can get up into that range.

Might be able to play in a 4-3 OLB scheme similarly to Von Miller, would love to get Irvin in Oakland

Hmm, it doesn't sound like he'd fit the Browns' scheme as a LB. We run a pretty vanilla 4-3 coupled with the fact that Gocong just signed an extension and played well at SAM, he probably wouldn't fit.

I'm definitely interested as a 3rd Rd. pick at DE. A rotation of Marcus Benard and Irvin would be intriguing with Sheard playing on the other side.

Do you see Irvin lasting to the top of the 3rd Rd.?

Definitely a fit in the Von Miller WLB-DE role. Probably in my top 32 prospects . What did he run?

Earlier in the process I thought he'd be a 3rd round pick, with the speed he showed I think he'll end up in the 2nd now

If Irvin puts his hand down and an O-lineman gets ahold of him, he will be done. Put him at LB, situational pass rusher on 3rd downs. Don't put him in position to fail and develop him, he could be successful.

I would never trust him to set the edge, but on third downs if you line him up wide and let him run, the OT is going to have a lot of trouble. There's enough athleticism to work with that I think he can become an effective WLB on first and second down, though I don't see quite the lateral movement Von had.

Fortunately for Irvin though, he dips and runs the arc very well. And he also possess a great ability to slip back inside of OTs. He's going to be tough to pin down.

Sounds alot like present day Aaron Maybin. 3rd down Pass rush specialist.

Useless most other times.

Surprised I haven't seen anyone else mention this yet. Bruce Irvin just blew up the combine. His tape isn't going to match his elite numbers but look at this.

Who blew up the combine? I'm looking at Bruce Irvin...top in his group in almost every catagory. Reached the target in everything but vertical jump.

Combine Measurements
Demarcus Ware - 6-4 251
Bruce Irvin - 6'3 245

40-yard dash Speed over distance
Target - 4.70
Ware - 4.56
Bruce Irvin - 4.50

225-pound bench press reps Upper body strength
Target - 23
Ware - 27
Bruce Irvin - 23

Vertical jump Explosiveness, leg strength
Target- 36
Ware - 38.5
Bruce Irvin - 33.5

Broad jump Explosiveness, leg strength
Target- 9-9
Ware - 10-2
Bruce Irvin - 10-3

20-yard shuttle Flexibility, burst, balance
Target- 4.10
Ware - 4.07
Bruce Irvin - 4.03

3-cone drill Agility, change of direction
Target- 7.10
Ware - 6.85
Bruce Irvin - 6.70

Give Irvin a year under a strength coach and I think you can add more to his lower half. His weak point was his vert and I have a feeling it was because he needs to add more strength to his lower half. He's a twitch athlete like Ware but he's not quite as strong or as far along.

Been on the Saints board saying I wanted him for weeks. Perfect rusher for us, because we need it badly.

Sadly, I think the combine put him before our spot.

Irvin reminds me a lot of Mark Anderson and Jacob Ford. He'll be great as a situational pass rusher but I can't see him ever being stout enough against the run to be a starter. I'm also concerned about his lack of pas rush moves, he looks all speed to me. Against these athletic tackles at the pro level he'll get stood up every time. I'm intrigued by his phenomenal athleticism but I wouldn't take him before round 4.

Not Von Miller.

Hmmm undersized DE with crazy numbers. Not Maybin cause he didn't run at 240/45, or have the strength.

Clay Matthews matches up #s wise, but didn't he have way more lower body bulk?

Irvin should not be compared to any of those people in a positive fashion except to acknowledge that they all put up good workout numbers.
