justice would be a good pickup as a backup tackle, id rather just bring in starks...the only problem with starks is they automatically slate him to start, and while hes played some good football the young guys NEED reps

Starks should be on the team. As of now there's no reason to think either of the guys we have are better. There's plenty of play time to go around in camp and the preseason. If Starks is still the best option, he plays.

People can say whatever they want about this team rebuilding. But Bens still on the team so keep him up right and we compete. Having Starks to a cheap one year deal makes so much sense it has to get done. He's the best option now, and having him plus Gilbert and Adams will be nice whenever someone inevitabley gets injured.

Cards just released ASnyder. Is he worth anything for OG depth?
I know on Madden he's decent!

Hahaha, at this point as others have stated, I'd rather get Starks back.

The thing with offensive linemen right now is that we're apparently going to move towards a really zone-block heavy scheme, meaning bigger but slower guys no longer have a place on our team.

That's great for the interior O-line, as Pouncey and DeCastro are quite athletic and should adapt well to it, but Ramon Foster is not exactly a particularly good fit, nor would be Starks for that matter. As good as he's been for us, we also have younger guys we need to develop, and they won't improve riding the bench. Adams and Gilbert are also more athletic and should be able to adapt to the new scheme as well. I think that's part of the reason we didn't try to address the O-line this draft, we might want to see how well the transition is. Truth be told, our O-line can't be worse than it was last year, we've got our guys healthy (for now), and there's no better way to improve O-line play than through continuity.

What worries me a bit though is the depth, or lack thereof, we have now. Legursky is solid at C, but I'm not big on him at G, and I don't quite fully trust Kelvin Beachum to be the swing tackle.

This seems to be a problem for multiple positions, not just with Starks. There's apparently a disconnect between the coaches and the FO when it comes to who should play. I remember reading somewhere that the FO wouldn't resign Hampton because the coaches played him extensively when McLendon should have been getting more reps.

hope the receivers wear numbers in the teens... always a fan of those... just not 17

i think brown should rock the big 19
landry will go 12 i suspect
wheaton imo should wear 11 but i think he will wear 82
bell should wear 22
thomas should rock a mini 43 - you figure with his and troy's propensity to be get injured they could feasibly manage 16 games between themselves

i'm a little confused about brown... how is it that someone who is 6'4", had 76 catches at a big time school, and even returned punts was a non invite to the combine, unranked on many sites, and is just generally unknown?!?

im guessing the transfer hurt him some... and i guess he isnt that great but still you gotta have some skill to post those numbers at oaklahoma

Markus Wheaton - report from the Pudge.

I'm loving Wheaton. I think he'll have good rookie year, if you can beat the jam and run good routes, you have a leg up.

now that we've all had time to digest... what are yalls final thoughts on the draft?

what grade would you all give this draft?

i think all in all i give it a C+

i'm not convinced that jarvis jones can do more than rush the qb - and honestly that may be okay granted that the steelers dont have him doing much more... having said that i do think he is the best in the draft at getting after the qb and disrupting offenses behind the LOS

not addressing ilb with arthur brown when he fell into our laps in the 2nd round will come back to bite us this year. another year of larry freaking foote moving around and lost in space will give me aids... i dont hate the bell pick, he def has the look about him but i dont see how he was graded higher than bell..

to me that smells like a push from the FO to colbert to say get a freaking rb and return us the the stillers of old

honestly rounds 3/4 save this draft for me...

wheaton, shamarko, and jones are all guys i think are great value picks and are goign to be very good nfl players

hawthrone is like every other mid round cb that has a 50/50 shot of making it

brown i love his potential as with williams as with williams

the arthur brown love got a little out of hand, i dont really see him as a terror...a good pro, but nothing too too special. Ravens have him now tho so im obviously rooting against him.

Im not crazy about bell, but jones is a great football player. I had him ranked #1 as a prospect, while i had my little heart set on patterson, taking him makes perfect sense

THeir draft gets an A from me....they took great values with all their picks except Bell and they filled needs.

I don't like Bell, but we knew going into the draft the front office did. Hopefully he works out, but I wasn't really impressed. I remember OSU simply dominating him, and that defense wasn't anything special at all this season.

Bell is a beast. He's a 3 down runner and a good one at that. I'll be surprised if he doesnt hit 1000 as a rookie.

Here's my draft grade:

1) Jarvis Jones OLB Georgia

He was one of four guys I was confident that would be a Steeler if he were there at 17. One of my favorite players in this draft as well. Now I know he isn't going to wow anyone with athleticism or be an all around LB for us, but the kid can get after the quarterback and that's what this team has been missing the past few seasons. Thank god that he ran that 4.9 because I don't believe he would be here if he didn't.

Grade: A

2) Le'Veon Bell RB Michigan State

I know a lot of people don't like this pick, and granted I wanted Arthur Brown or Eddie Lacy more, I still don't hate this pick. He's a three down workhorse back and instantly becomes our best back. People fail to recognize that he ran behind a crappy Michigan State OL for his whole career and still banged out quality yards. I can see him niche out a career YPC average around 4 and getting 1000 yards with 10 TDs his rookie year. That said, I liked more backs than him and felt like we could have traded down for Bell.

Grade: C+

3) Markus Wheaton WR Oregon State

After we drafted him, I watched 4 game tape videos of him and every game I came away impressed. He isn't the biggest dude, but he is a tough WR and a very good receiver at that. I like how he explodes out of his breaks and can get by multiple defenders despite not having the speed Mike Wallace did. He may not make as many game changing plays as Wallace, but he definitely will be the better WR of the two. Real excited for this kid. They also got him at a great value as well.

Grade: A

4) Shamarko Thomas S Syracuse

He and Phillip Thomas were the two safeties I wanted when the fourth round came about. I'm thrilled about Shamarko. He isn't the biggest guy, but he'll straight up knock you on your ass and keep doing it. He plays very similar to Polamalu, though I don't think he'll have as many game changing plays as Troy does. I don't know how he was available. If he can keep his health up, we have a starting S for the next 5-8 years. I love this kid and this pick. Losing a pick next year is irrelevant IMO.

Grade: A

4) Landry Jones QB Oklahoma

I thought a fourth round was a little high for a QB considering that Tyler Bray and other notable QBs went undrafted. Anyways, I find this pick interesting. The Steelers DID need a change up in the QB room and if he develops more pocket awareness and toughness, he could be the heir apparent to Ben Roethlisberger within the next 5 years. He has a great arm and played in a offense similar to what we do here. Despite me liking him as a player, I feel like this was a reach for the QB position and with that, I give them a lower grade than I would.

Grade: C

5) Terry Hawthorne CB Illinois

A tough, big, physical corner that Carnell Lake loves. Once regarded as a first round pick going into the season, I'm surprised his stock fell so far. I'm not complaining. This kid can play and I would not be surprised if he were to end up a starter in a few years. He brings instant competition to Curtis Brown and the rest, while improving the ST unit a lot. Worth noting: He did a great job against arguably the best B10 WR last year in Allen Robinson.

Grade: B+

6) Justin Brown WR Oklahoma

While he has great size and can offer return ability, I am not so sure we couldn't have landed him as an UDFA. He doesn't offer much of anything but a wide body, but Coach Mann probably vouched for him. Still, I think an OLman or even a better WR could have been better than Brown here. I don't think he will beat out Plex for a roster spot.

Grade: D

6) Vince Williams LB Florida State

Now I like Williams. I think he's a very solid player and he packs a punch whenever he drives through ball carriers. I don't like that he's only a two down player. With that, I don't ever see him as a starter. I see him making the same progress as Sly has, though hopefully better. He's going to be one hell of a special teams player, though. I think it'll be between he and Sly for a roster spot.

Grade: C

7) Nicholas Williams DE Samford

I admit, I don't know much about him, but after hearing what Coach Mitchell said and reading up on him, I like this pick. He has the ideal size for a 5 tech and has the ability. He is just so raw and too hot and cold on his motor to get an idea on how his future will pan out. I know he isn't going to make the roster this year and probably will be a project, but I like his potential and I think he could end up similar to how Steve McClendon has worked out.

Grade C:

Overview:

I love that we went after our needs in this draft. The top four picks have the ability to produce this year, with Bell and Wheaton expected to produce more. I don't think Jones starts right away and Thomas will strictly be a nickle guy who is a terror on special teams. Vince Williams and Hawthorne will make special team impacts while Nick Williams and Justin Brown will be fighting hard for a roster spot, but IMO, might come up just short.

Overall Grade: Low B- to high C+
