Didn't he have 3 years left on his rookie deal?

I think they (the Jets) thought they needed to do damage control with him after the rumors of the Jets interest in Peyton Manning. How he was ever the 4th pick in the draft is beyond me. He seems like a mentally soft individual that needs to be propped up. Supposedly he is coddled in the locker room. He relishes the spotlight but really isn't worthy of it but living in NY gets it anyways since Eli is a little more guarded, reserved, well respected teammate and leader - not a fame *****.

Finally, there's a surreal aspect to the extension in the form of an escalator that can reach a cool $10 million if Sanchez leads the Jets to four Super Bowl titles in the next five seasons.
I dunno if this has been posted, but it made me laugh very loud in the quiet section of the library.

I was laughing more at the idea of Sanchez leading the jets anywhere, let alone 4 superbowls in the next 5 years.

He was set up to fail IMO. He came into the league throwing at Cotchery, Clowney and Stucky. Where are these guys now? Throw in Braylon late in a season. Holmes late in a season. Mason for a minute. Plaxico was garbage. Was Coles in the mix at some point? Jeremy Kerley and Patrick Turner, other TE's and RB'S.

There are a lot of QBs who've looked better despite having less to work with than Cotchery, Edwards, Holmes, Plax, and Mason...

Mason was here for a day or two.

Its not the quality of the WR's i have an issue with its the rotation of them. How do you develop a young QB with no constant pieces in his arsenal. Couple that with a terrible offense coordinator who couldnt make Bret Favre look good.

Yet he still has 4 playoff wins and his 5th all time in post season passer ratings. I'll take that upside and run with it.

At this point Eli looked like ****. Brees was ran out of town and Rodgers was still riding the bench.

I think there isn't a high ceiling. You speak of upside when referring to things in the past. I think he can be better but I'm not sure how much. The general feeling is that he doesn't have the upside as many other young QBs.

Also Favre did look good until he got hurt. That's revisionist history. People were going crazy for Favre in the beginning.

Yeah, he did look pretty good before the injury. You can still see his game logs here:

http://www.nfl.com/player/brettfavre...gs?season=2008

You can tell when he got injured, too. He had 20 TD passes in the first 11 games, and only 2 in the last 5 games. He also was riding a streak of three straight games with a QB Rating of 100+, and then never made it above 61.4 throughout the last five games.

yeah it's funny that people think Brett failed in NY because of his play, if he hadn't gotten hurt, or hadn't played hurt he may have played another season there

Look what he did next year in Minnesota. He didn't all of a sudden become good again, he was healthy again, like he was at the start if that year /w the Jets.

See, I love the signing, I still believe in Sanchez and see a breakout year coming this season if the Jets can get him some weapons.

I may have to eat humble pie but that is my prediction.

Sanchez entered the league with only 16 starts in college as a raw junior to say the least. He showed a lot of promise in his first 2 seasons when the Jets made the conference finals and was almost unbeatable in December of both seasons.
Sure, he took a backward step last season but the Jet's offense and defense really didn't play all that well but they were still in the race for quite awhile. Plax replacing Edwards didn't work out and the running attack average about 50 yards less a game from the previous 2 seasons.

From all my experience, many great NFL QB's took around 3 years to reach real success and they entered the NFL as seasoned college QB's not raw juniors, so I still believe that it is quite possible that Sanchez could have a great breakout season.

And I'm not a Jet's fan.

Favre game vs ARI really skewed him altogether, he was brilliant that game but then you had some other games like vs the Pats in Week 2 and Bolts in week 3 and Raiders in week 7 vs JaMarcus Russell and OAK that he was bad. While I would agree that he stunk when he got hurt, he put that upon himself by staying in and using the media to stay in and because Mangini and Co. were begging Favre would put it together to save their jobs.

Cotchery was a steady No.2 for the Jets and Thomas Jones of 2008 was very, very, very good and better than what Sanchez worked with in 2010 and 2011. Faneca also wasn't a joke of a pass protecting LG at that point.

Coles was also decent and Keller had a good rookie year too.

Let's not play the "Sanchez has no weapons" card. He had plenty of talent around him.

There were rookie qbs in this league that did more with less without a training camp as a rookie than Sanchez. He doesn't have a talent excuse.
