Eh, like I've said before, he's not going to do much. Just oversee as Spags and Carmichael run their sides of the ball.

Having him there would be less risky to Payton's job since Parcells will step back down after the year is up.

Well there were a few complicating factors that made the punishment so harsh.

First is that the NFL told them to stop and the Saints didn't. The Packers were running a players only bounty system a few years back, the NFL told them to stop, and they did. The Saints defied an order from the NFL.

Then they lied about it. The NFL found that Payton and Loomis knew about it, but didn't stop it.

And finally, there's the emphasis on player safety. A lot of people seem to think this is the biggest issue, the part about intentionally injuring players, but I actually think the first two things led to the severity of the punishment.

I just think the NFL was so harsh to protect their ass. When future lawsuits come down on injuries and head trauma, the NFL can point to this harsh punishment as an example of how they attempted to clean up the sport.

If they weren't harsh, Brett Favre could potentially sue them 20 years down the road for letting this occur.

I don't how the NFL is at fault for these injuries later on in life. These guys make decisions themselves knowing full well how they can end up. Should Ali sue the boxing federations that let him fight?

The problem is, up until about the past decade or so, they really didn't. A lot of the lawsuits, like the one Jim McMahon is apart of, are on the grounds that the NFL lied or covered up the dangerous long term side effects of concussions.

No but in this case I could see a lawsuit where one of these guys who had a bounty on them could say the NFL didn't do their due diligence in stopping this practice. The harsh punishment the Saints received gives the NFL legs to stand on.

It isn't the same as just some guy who played 3 years in the NFL suing later for failing health.

I mean come on you have to be really dumb if these NFL players really thought that all the hits they took posed no danger to themselves long term. It's blindfull ignorance on the players part.

Most NFL players really are dumb. Or at the very least, they put honor before reason. Most players still aren't going to go sit out because they took a blow to the head and feel woozy. That could cost them money and respect from their teammates.

And it's why a lot of them are speaking out about the rules preventing hits to the head. A lot of guys fear that we'll see more knee injuries, which are far more detrimental to a player's money making potential. Long term health be damned, they'd rather get hit in the head than have a knee taken out.

Two days after we were talking about it, ESPN apparently finally caught up to the whole "Rooney Rule implications of hiring Parcells" thing.

Does the Rooney Rule apply to interim head-coaching candidates? This situation is the exception, not the rule so what happens with the Saints will set a precedent for any other coaching suspensions that happen down the road.

Personally I do not think the Rooney Rule should apply here but I also think that the whole Parcell's scenario should not be worthy of consideration. The Saints should be forced to stick with someone in house to coach the season.

If the Saints stayed within their organization, it wouldn't apply. But if they hire from the outside it does. No exception.

"I had plenty of opportunities to do things with different teams, and I've turned them all down," Parcells said. "But this one is special. This guy is like family to me. And if I could help him, I would." While both Payton and Parcells maintain that no job offer has been made, the club may simply be biding time to come up with a candidate to circumvent the Rooney Rule

And to buy time until Payton's appeal is heard:

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...pension-today/

I mean...I guess it's worth a shot. But the guy hearing the appeal is the exact same one who gave out the punishment in the first place. I find it unlikely he succeeds in any way.

He's not appealing because he thinks he's going to win. He knows he has no chance. It's just to delay the suspension and give him a little more time to get the replacement situation figured out.

If I'm about to lose millions of dollars, hell yes I'm going to appeal. It gives him more time to get a coach lined up and maybe he gets some type of slight reduction somewhere.

You know, the rule changes to "protect" players are laughable. If the NFL really cared about player safety, they'd demand that players wear all possible padding, not just shoulder pads and a helmet. But, even on the topic of concussions, they don't require players to wear the new generation helmets which are better for protecting against concussions.

Nah, but def. ballsy that they were appealing. That's like if your son or daughter does something wrong, and you spend like 10 minutes yelling at them, and finally punish them and send them away. Instead, they pull up a chair, and say they want to appeal or talk about the punishment, lol.

If they weren't harsh, Brett Favre could potentially sue them 20 years down the road for letting this occur.
It's not that harsh, though. Payton is a $7 Million per year manager who's working within a $40 Billion enterprise. In almost any other industry, they'd have shitcanned him in a New York Minute, just for acting like an idiot by ignoring directives and deliberately lying during an investigation. He wouldn't even have a job at all, if it weren't for the unique star-power of Super Bowl Champion Head Coaches.

Yeah. I think he knows he's not going to win the appeal. Him and Loomis are just trying to buy as much time as possible. Putting together the interim head coach, get a draft strategy lined up to be more prepared by the 26th.

Unless the appeal process is handeld quickly, then the Saints should be able to handle what they want to do and have more time.

I hate that Roger Goodell hears the appeal as well and makes the decision. Damn those Power hungry gingers.

If they already have Parcells lined up the candidate they bring in to satisfy the Rooney Rule will just be there as a formality, they might as well just grab a random black person in the hall and interview him.
