When is the right time for heroics? Is there a time?
I saw a young girl get robbed today two blocks from my home in broad daylight. She looked like a tourist and the guy looked like someone who has been on the streets for quite some time. Both were around my age it seemed (twenties) I was in position to catch up to the guy and possibly stop him, and it was clear that she wasn't going to catch him (she tried pursuing while screaming), but due to some previous advice I had coincidentally received about a week earlier from someone, I froze. Now I feel bad. Should I have stuck my neck out for a stranger and played hero? Or should I have minded my own business? Everyone else was simply looking. Maybe trying to figure out what was going on. Is doing nothing as bad as actually doing the act? Especially when you can make a difference? What say you?

Thats always been the problem with our society, everyone watches expecting someone else to do something.

Yes, you should have done something. If you could have caught up to him you should have. Man up. You're not playing the hero anyway, you're playing a decent human being.

I wouldn't do it if I didn't know for a fact the guy didn't have a weapon.

I talked to my recently engaged girlfriend about the situation. She was the one that gave me the advice a few days ago about letting certain things go and minding my own business. I think she is just afraid for my safety. We had a little debate about this, as I felt I should have helped the girl who was mugged.
My girlfriend and someone else have since told me that the person that stole whatever could have been armed. Now, around my area most of the shady looking people are just cracked out drug addicts out of their mind. They aren't dangerous. I doubt this person was armed, but it's possible he could have been. I mean, I could have chased after him, and who knows what happens at that point. By the way I don't have health insurance anyways. And if I find out that all he took was some clothes that the girl recently bought and I get seriously messed up...well I might regret the decision.
On the other hand if it was a child I saw being taken, I would have bolted for sure. I would hope that most other people would have as well.

And if I get shot? I'm still working on dodging bullets.

She kept chasing him all the way up the steep block in the opposite direction. Poor girl.

If you see a gun or a knife sure, but you didn't mention he had a weapon. And instead of just standing there, how about calling the cops? There are multiple ways to be a "hero" this day and age.. helping her out at all would have been better than sitting there with your thumb up your ass.

I don't think she was physically harmed. I was walking down the hill/block and around the corner this guy spirited across like two feet in front of me carrying what looked like a rolled up paper that was pretty big. He had a heavy coat on as well and a hat.
Then about a nanosecond afterward, I heard a scream. I didn't know what was going on at first. Then this girl came around the corner trying to run after him just screaming. I don't think she spoke English. Although she was running, she wasn't going to catch him. I think she was wearing wedges too.

I didn't mention he had a weapon, because there was no way of knowing if he did.
The guy had a heavy coat on and sprinted right past me. There was no way I could have seen if he had a weapon.
I don't recall having my phone with me at the time. Even if I did, both were gone within seconds.
Oh and nice job with the personal insults dude. Stay classy as usual.

Even if I saw my own girlfriend or mom getting robbed I still wouldn't chase after the dude. It's not being a coward or anything, it's just not worth it. She probably lost like $40, a credit card she can cancel immediately, and maybe a cell phone. Sucks, but so what. Not worth potentially getting shot or stabbed over. Now if I saw some dude beating on a women, then I'd probably step in.

If she were hot and didn't have a wedding ring, I'd consider it.

absolutely not. its only money. let it go.
The time for heroics is if he were trying to rape her.
Money? You'd have a decent chance of being "Jvig'd" and getting stabbed for your troubles. Then she'd have the emotional turmoil and guilt over your death. Generally speaking, if someone is trying to rob you then you should let them take what they want. If you feel that your life, livelihood, woman's sexual parts are at jeopardy then its the right time to act and rip his throat out. No part of chasing some guy down and then trying to overpower him for a purse or something falls under that category. Just get out of the way, protect her, and get the cops there as fast as possible.

Plus, the dude was running away...damage done. Its like the old adage about a QB throwing the ball. 3 things can happen and 2 of them aren't good. You could have stopped him, or he could have beaten you, or he could have killed you.
