i fail to see what B has to do with A. he was by a massive margin the most physically gifted qb prospect ever. his arm strength was/is incredible. his speed AND quickness was unmatched by nearly anyone at any position in the league, let alone at qb. every knock on him was something potentially fixable.

If you want your QB to lead his position in rushing for most of his career, Vick is your man. But he NEVER developed as a passer until he was released from the Fed and tutored under Andy Reid.
this again has absolutely nothing to do with him as a prospect.

IMO Vick would not have been taken before Carson Palmer, Eli, Philip Rivers, Leinart, Cutler, Jamarcus Russell, Stafford, Bradford, Newton, Luck or RGIII if he had been available in the same draft these former 1st rounders were taken.
he would've been taken over every single one on the basis of his potential. matt leinart? really?

I tend to believe NFL scouting is more sophisticated than it was in 2001 when it comes to evaluating the QB position.
see: jamarcus russell.

that was my fault, i was typing too early. i didn't mean intangibles in the standard nfl draft sense, where they're almost 'tangibles' at this point. however, brees was tremendously better in the pocket. yes, wilson is more athletic. but even with, iirc, a far better offensive line, he just wasn't as good at moving within the pocket and relied more on being able to get outside the pocket. brees had better 'zip' on his passes. i don't know if their deep ball arm strength is functionally different, but brees threw a better short ball. i think brees generally did a far better job of reading through progressions, even if they started off simplified in his offense. *shrug*

i should note that none of this is to say that i think wilson is bad or a bust or anything else along those lines. but he was picked in the 4th round for a reason, and to suggest that he was on par with a qb who should've gone in the first (no hindsight, at the time i thought drew brees falling was a travesty, only to see it happen again with rodgers) as a prospect is ridiculous. brees was simply a better prospect.

i ask because this is such a massive load of revisionist crap that i sincerely hope you weren't really watching football at that point.

additionally (and completely unrelated), the brees/wilson comparisons are so lazy. no wonder espn is garbage. they cater to people who eat this garbage up and then parrot it back because they're not capable of thinking for themselves.
I don't know much about Wilson and how strong his arm really is, but that was a knock against Brees coming out of college. He was accurate, a winner, but his height and lack of arm strength was probably what knocked him down to the second round. It was evident during his years with the Chargers as well even towards the end of 2005.

Not to hate on Wilson but I really hate how quickly people bring up Drew Brees when talking about Wilson. Brees has absolutely elite accuracy, and thinks the game at an incredibly high level...and he still sucked donkey nuts for his first few years while he figured out how to operate amongst the trees. Not saying Wilson's going to suck at all, but the expectations for him to flourish because of the QB Drew Brees has now become, are simply absurd.

The comparison was meant mostly as pro prospects, not SB champ Brees the future HOFer. In that case the only thing Brees and Wilson currently have in common is height.

But even if we assume that they're comparable prospects, although I tend fall in line with the people that say Drew Brees was a better prospect with a superior understanding of quarterbacking, Drew Brees struggled hugely until he became absolutely elite in the accuracy and thinking departments. So unless Wilson similarly becomes one of the absolute best in the NFL at those two things, he'll look a lot more like pre-Rivers Brees than SB winner Drew Brees, and banking on any day two QB to become one of the most accurate and smartest QBs in the NFL is a huge long shot that's just not likely to happen. It could, but even if it does it won't have made it likely.

All I was saying is that Brees and Wilson to me were/are similar pro prospects who were underrated because of their height.

I never saw Brees play in the preseason, but IMO Russell Wilson has looked better than either RGIII and Andrew Luck so far.
We have years to go in order to see how good a pro QB Russell Wilson actually is, but up to this point he's aced every test put in front of him as a young pro.

I think Wilson was a better pick than Weeden BTW.
Wilson also is a cerebral QB and understands how to prepare himself to play, that's why I don't agree with the opinion that Brees was somehow a more analytical signal caller who had a superior conceptual understanding of the position.

I used to think RGIII, Luck or Trent Richardson were the safe picks for OROTY.
Now, I think RB David Wilson and Russell Wilson are smart choices to take home the award.

We'll see how it goes.

Like I said during draft time.. If Wilson was 3-4 inches taller he'd be a top 5 pick. The Seahawks stole him in the 3rd round and I knew if given the chance he'd win the QB competition. I'm so happy for him and I hope he proves to be a top caliber QB in this league.
