There were quite a few teams trying to get SF to trade his rights to them, KC isn't the only team that doesn't like this QB crop. As a FA, KC would have been in a bidding war with only a slim chance of signing him. A 2nd rounder will prove to be a cheap price if KC win 8 to 10 games.

As for Alex Smith himself, I think he is a lot better QB than people give him credit for, Kaepernick is looking like a future all pro player so it isn't shameful to lose your job to him. Smith may not be Pro Bowl material but his won and lose record for the last 2 years is very impressive.

For those saying there was a bidding war for his services, let's take a look at the teams who were supposedly bidding for him shall we?

KC
Cleveland
Arizona

Not exactly model organizations. Ok KC has had some success so they get a pass. But when you see Arizona and Cleveland fighting for the same mediocre qb, shouldn't that be a sign to stay away from him?

Is Alex Smith with a good QB coach better than Matt Cassel with a good QB coach? History says "**** no".

And I like Alex Smith. This is just a bad deal. I figured they'd end up giving SF a 3rd at the most.

OR, just maybe it really indicates how bad this year's crop of rookie QB's is going to be.

I'm with Vidae that a team without a franchise QB MUST continue to draft QB's in round 1 till they find a true franchise QB, I've never disagreed on that principle, the only thing I disagreed on was, can Smith or any other QB in this year's draft be a franchise QB?? IMO, nobody was going to come out of this group as a franchise QB and a team must face that reality and go in a different direction even if it means waiting a year.

Really, where the Jets hosed themselves was back in 2010 when they sacrificed the future to push a bunch of money out.

Geno Smith won't make as much money as Mark Sanchez did, so that problem isn't really a problem. Look at the Jags, they drafted Gabbert 10th, found out he sucked after two years, and will likely move on from him.

Drafting a bad QB isn't the end of the world like people make it seem. People have to separate that what's good for the GM/decision maker isn't always good for the franchise. I saw it happen with Gene Smith. The Jets saw it happen with Tannenbaum. When you make long-term decisions to protect your job for one more season...that's when you **** the franchise over as a GM.
stop using real logic. Weren't you banned for that or something?

If I'm Dwayne Bowe right now I'm getting the hell out of KC as fast as I can. Unless I'm franchised, I'd sign with literally ANYONE ELSE. Ditto for Branden Albert.

This team is going nowhere. I'd jump ship as soon as possible.

8-10 wins does NOT make this a good trade. A AFCCG appearance might.

Exactly.

If Smith can't lead them into a playoff run, this trade was a bust.

i was more questioning that you said a championship game MIGHT make it a good trade...an appearance would make the trade worth it

Really? I think the exact opposite. In terms of their own job security, this is the better move.

So if the Chiefs drafted Geno Smith and he failed, Dorsey and Reid would both be safe? Even in today's NFL, 1st round quarterbacks get three years to prove themselves. If Geno doesn't produce in three years, you think Dorsey and Reid are going to be allowed to pick another quarterback in the 1st round? How many coaches and GM's get to stick around for more than three or four years if their #1 overall pick fails?

I'll be the first person to say that the Chiefs gave up too much to get him, but I think people need to lighten up a bit. Why in the world would you want the Chiefs to draft a quarterback at #1 overall if neither of the decision-makers felt comfortable with these quarterbacks? Sure, maybe you all like Geno but I don't want my team taking a player, especially at quarterback, that they don't like.

If you miss, you miss and your job is still on the line. Sure the sting would of been more with the #1 pick, but on the flipside, the demands out your team is now a lot higher by acquiring Alex Smith via a trade than trying to develop your own guy.

I wish them luck sending out Alex Smith to out-duel Peyton Manning/Phillip Rivers twice a year. Oh and Oakland will probably take Geno Smith now, so you better hope you're damn right or he's going to be kicking your ass twice a year.

Twice a year for the next decade.

If Geno goes to Oakland and becomes a star, Reid and Dorsey will never live it down in this town. Ever.

I kinda hope we don't tbh. It would be cool but our D is beyond pathetic and QB is really not the biggest worry atm.

And Pryor should at least get 1 real shot at the job after Palmer.

I asked what you WOULD do, again assuming you don't like any of these QB prospects, including how that player would help your team compete in 2013.

B) If you allow outside pressure to dictate your decision making, then you're doomed to fail. Outside pressure should have 0 effect on your football operation.
A) That's absolutely fair. All draft classes are not created equal. If Andy Reid doesn't like any QBs to hitch his wagon to, that's his decision. He clearly did not. You can't just tell someone to PICK ONE YOU LIKE MOST because you need that position. If they don't like any of them, which is absolutely understandable if you evaluate all of these particular players, that leaves you in quite a bind.

B) That outside pressure fills the stands and buys jerseys. It's easy for us to sit here and say "suck a year, draft one next year." This is a business. Coming off of 2-14, you absolutely have pressure to put a better QB out there next year. None of the draftees can be that guy in the eyes of Reid, so he went out and got the one he felt could.

You can criticize the trade, and the 49ers clearly held all the cards.

However, if you can wrap your head around not liking any QBs in this draft, the idea that HE NEEDED TO GET A QB, you can understand WHY he made this move.

If you actually think that trading what they did for Alex Smith will put asses in the seats or sell jerseys, you're sorely mistaken. Like I said earlier, I wouldn't be surprised to see a few blackouts at Arrowhead this year.

I dont want a little trophy with an engraving that says "good job. you tried." every move should be made with the SB in mind. **** 8-10 wins, hoping to back into the playoffs and losing that playoff game. Been there done that. Does Alex Sith help the Chiefs win a SB? Real question. If not than this is a waste of time.
