How Much Does Geno's Performance vs Syracuse Hurt His Stock?

I'd like you guys' thoughts on this

- How much does this game hurt him if at all?
- Where does he rank on your list of top qb prospects after this?
- Do you feel he has a skillset and intangibles that transcend WVU's offensive scheme and would allow him to thrive in a more conventional system?
- Could he have had success at a Alabama, LSU or a Boston College which are all other schools that recruited him out of HS?

Very minimally. He's had has 3 full seasons worth of film. One game, especially in those circumstances, won't sway opinions much either way.


- Where does he rank on your list of top qb prospects after this?

First but very closely followed by Tyler Wilson


- Do you feel he has a skillset and intangibles that transcend WVU's offensive scheme and would allow him to thrive in a more conventional system?

I've felt this way for a while but I think his style of play wasn't necessarily best suited for a spread offense. Because of the way he moves and works within the pocket, I really think he projects better to working primarily under center. He is a step-and-stride passer who does a nice job at finding throwing lanes within the pocket. Because he's patient and will work through his progressions, we often see him get stuck in that little hop right after he does his litte 3-step out of a shotgun/pistol snap which sometimes is an issue for him. If he was dropping back from under center, the timing and feel, especially off PA would be a lot more natural with his movement and the way he plays.


- Could he have had success at a Alabama, LSU or a Boston College which are all other schools that recruited him out of HS?

See no reason why not. Still has a very solid physical skillset and by all accounts his work ethic is second to none and that translates anywhere. Also not a system dependent player imo.

I've just never really felt it with Geno. This game doesn't change much besides maybe expose his arm strength as average.

I don't think he'll be a bad QB in the pros but I don't think he'll be very good either. Some scout beat me to the punch on the Alex Smith comp I was waiting to bust out (figured there was no rush since it was cross-race.) How big are his hands?

Also, for all the stupid media hate Cam gets Geno is no less of a curmudgeon when things aren't going his way.

Hm still think his numbers are inflated. Austin/bailey YAC are ridiculously good.

Questioned his leadership/character at points when e reacted when things went south.

I think he isn't ready to come in and start. Big risk if taken number one.

It's not that difficult of an offense. The goal is to get the ball in the hands of the WRs ASAP. Defensively, prevent those guys from getting the YACs that have killed people.

Syracuse did that. Only 5 WVU passes went for more than 10 yards. And it's not like Cuse has a stellar pass defense.

I don't know why. But he seems like a Tony Romo type of player. And I guess Philip Rivers.

Good regular season numbers type of guy. Might post decent stats in a post-season game. But just doesn't have the "It"/clutch factor about him. Although the bowl game yesterday the conditions were horrible.

But, honestly.. I want to see the Jets take him, if they don't have to trade up in the upcoming draft.

When I watch Geno Smith (and let me preface this by saying I do like him as a prospect) I simply don't see any "IT" in his game. He has the tools to be successful in the NFL, and given the current talent at the position I think he can come in and be a middle of the pack starter. That may sound like an insult to his ability, but it's not; I see nothing wrong with being a starter rated somewhere between 15 and 20. Is that enough to go 1st overall to the Chiefs? Honestly it probably is because they need a guy who can manage a game and make the necessary throws since they have an established ground attack and a bunch of talent on defense. I don't see an especially high ceiling with Geno nor do I see a low floor. Sam Bradford and Alex Smith, both being 1st overall picks, have come in and become steady QB's, nothing special, and Geno will be much the same.

I think yesterday's performance was a fitting end to Smith's career. They started out hot - everyone was on his nuts for heisman and 1st overall pick and than they actually play some tough teams with good defenses and get exposed. 10 years ago Smith would of been lumped in with the other system QBs - Timmy Chang/Texas Tech QBs. Yesterday was a really good summation of the 2-6 end to WVU's season.

I was happy to see him go out a loser - the guy just rubbed me the wrong way. And like I have said countless times that he is going to be compared to Griffin and Newton by those know-nothings like Peter King and other media types because they are black.

Did you miss the Baylor and Texas games? He was clutch then. The defense has 100% of the blame for WVU's W/L this season.

Even in the Oklahoma game, Geno hit Bailey On a 40 yard pass to take a 5 point lead with 2:28 to go in the game. Mind you, they were down 14 in the 3rd. Three fourth quarter TD passes but the defense squanders it with 30 seconds to go.

Go ahead TD with 6:30 to go in the Iowa State game.

Don't forget they had to put 70 pts up on Baylor only to beat them by a TD. Yeah Geno's had some great moments...some "IT" moments throughout his career. Also, Syracuse has his number...he finishes 0-3 against them in his career. Still, last night...I can't help but feel he could've done more, maybe make some plays with his legs when nothing was there.

This guy also hated Russell Wilson and went as far to neg rep me because I said I thought he'd be a very good QB for Seattle earlier in the year before he started taking the league by storm. I know a lot of people were down on Wilson, and I don't mind being neg repped from time to time if it calls for it, but I'm a little skeptical of this guys ability to scout QB's. (not that I'm a professional by any means). I only bring up the neg rep because he seems to really, really, dislike certain QB's for some reason and spews venom towards them.

SolidGold, you seem to hold yourself in pretty high regards when it comes to scouting QB's. I'm curious, which QB's currently in college do you actually like?
