This isn't a court of law. This is the court of public of opinion. In the court of law I would view him as innocent until proven guilty. Not that this is in anyway a criminal offense, further making the "innocent until proven guilty" statement even sillier.
In the court of public opinion he can be whatever we damn well please.

So, which is more embarrassing, Manti Teo lying about his girlfriend or Lance Armstrong lying about getting injected with dead horse ***** daily?

The court of public opinion is traditionally "Guilty until proven Innocent" anyway.

That's quite the assumption. I'd be surprised if Teo was thinking that he couldnt win the Heisman if he didnt make this up.

I want someone to ask him "So Mr. Te'o, for 3 years you never once saw your "girlfriend" aside from 1 photo that was stolen from someone else and you never tried to visit/meet her?". I'd love to hear his answer to that one.

What do Manti Te'o's girlfriend and half of Alabama's national championships have in common?

What the hell?? =0 lmao. Look now lets be honest Teo might actually be a good fit for the Jets no?
If they took him with their #9 pick for some strange reason I wouldnt be all that surprised =D
Update (5:17 p.m.): Notre Dame responds:
On Dec. 26, Notre Dame coaches were informed by Manti Te'o and his parents that Manti had been the victim of what appears to be a hoax in which someone using the fictitious name Lennay Kekua apparently ingratiated herself with Manti and then conspired with others to lead him to believe she had tragically died of leukemia. The University immediately initiated an investigation to assist Manti and his family in discovering the motive for and nature of this hoax. While the proper authorities will continue to investigate this troubling matter, this appears to be, at a minimum, a sad and very cruel deception to entertain its perpetrators.
Dennis Brown
University Spokesman | Assistant Vice President
Update (6:10 p.m.): Manti Te'o's statement:
This is incredibly embarrassing to talk about, but over an extended period of time, I developed an emotional relationship with a woman I met online. We maintained what I thought to be an authentic relationship by communicating frequently online and on the phone, and I grew to care deeply about her. To realize that I was the victim of what was apparently someone's sick joke and constant lies was, and is, painful and humiliating. It further pains me that the grief I felt and the sympathies expressed to me at the time of my grandmother's death in September were in any way deepened by what I believed to be another significant loss in my life. I am enormously grateful for the support of my family, friends and Notre Dame fans throughout this year. To think that I shared with them my happiness about my relationship and details that I thought to be true about her just makes me sick. I hope that people can understand how trying and confusing this whole experience has been. In retrospect, I obviously should have been much more cautious. If anything good comes of this, I hope it is that others will be far more guarded when they engage with people online than I was. Fortunately, I have many wonderful things in my life, and I'm looking forward to putting this painful experience behind me as I focus on preparing for the NFL Draft.
crazy story

They're made up. Alabama claims a number of national championships that they didn't actually win.

Would have to think that if he has made it up for gain that it falls into something akin to fraud...
Also... this is just hilarious. The level of stupidity that it would take for the glass half full types to be right is off the charts and if it's fraudulent it might be even better from an entertainment point of view.

This seems like the most likely theory. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Really weird story. The idea that Te'o was conned absolutely strains belief. Faking a girlfriends death seems like a really desperate ploy for attention/fame. Given that he wasn't the creator of the fake girlfriend, you have to believe he intended for the story to be picked up by the media. Perhaps he wanted to get the Heisman desperately, or was just trying to hide his homosexuality and the story got out of control? I wonder where he gets picked now that his public reputation is shot.
