There was never any legitimate question that Flacco was going to get a big deal. If you thought Flacco was going to play under the franchise tag next year, or that the Ravens would let him get away, take this as a lesson learned on how the NFL works.

I'm pretty sure that nobody thought that. We have people who wouldn't want Barry Sanders on their team, others who think that Shaun Hill is a top-20 QB, and people who think that Gronk is a waste of talent. Still, I think everybody knew Flacco was getting his big contract.

There is a difference between a big contract and a record setting contract. No one thought he was going to be let go but I never for a second though he was actually going to become the highest paid player in the NFL.

Adam Schefter @AdamSchefter
Joe Flacco and Ravens agreed to a six-year contract in excess of $120 million that makes him the highest paid player in NFL history.

Wow I'd hate to go against Ozzie Newsome but I don't think that was the right decision. When you are watching players like Brady and Stafford re negotiate contracts to keep the team around them its a pretty big statement. We'll see just how good Flacco is in the next few seasons.

Third post of the thread. Pretty sure there were at least a couple more similar comments. Maybe this post was sarcastic or something, but I believe there was a few people who thought there would be an outcome other than what it inevitably has been.

He has the biggest contract ever!... until the next QB is signed.
I need the details to see how it is broken down, but its not like the Ravens have other options. Starting over with a new QB (especially when there aren't any) is crazier than signing a semi-bad deal.

It'll be interesting to see how Ryan's extension is done. I could see him getting basically the same money as Flacco, but I could also see him willing to take less since his rookie deal was so much more lucrative than Flacco's.

Laugh my ******* ass off
@RavensInsider: According to a league source, it's a six-year pact for Joe Flacco that tops $120 million

Ryan and Rodgers are both better QBs so I expect them to get more honestly. Should be fun to see what they get. Rarely do guys just give up millions of dollars easily.

Joe should personally deliver Rahim Moore a $10 million dollar check.

Well done Flacco. And not a single All Pro or even Pro Bowl to your name. Screw the system.

Well what the **** were they supposed to do, let him walk? They had to pay him and they had to pay him what he wanted. There are about 20 teams that would have been interested if he hit the market. He shouldn't be the highest paid player in the league, but the Ravens had no choice but to make him that.

They could have used the nonexclusive tag saved 5 mil and then see what happened. If a team puts a huge offer which only 5 teams could do and maybe 2 would even want to. The Browns and the Bengals are the only two teams without a QB and the cap space needed to give Flacco a huge contract. They do that then the Ravens get two first round draft picks and a ton of cap space.

And then what? They have to test their luck at drafting another good QB. Yeah, that'd be a terrible move.

Sooooooo the idea is to replace Flacco with Matt Barkley or something? Instant 20% population drop in Baltimore from people jumping in the Bay, lol.

Except that Flacco is save the playoff run not this amazing QB people claim him. Around average. Finding an average QB within the next two draft classes shouldn't be hard for the Ravens.
To add to that the 20 mil a year also goes to keeping other starters is Joe Flacco worth 7 starters? I say no.

He's not, but he's still around a top 10 or so QB. That's really not easy to find. If it isn't hard to find a QB like Flacco, then why have so many teams been unable to do it?

Did Flacco get hot at the right time, or did he turn the corner? If you're getting the Flacco that we saw in the playoffs, I guess he's worth $20 Million.
We could have asked the same question about Eli just a few years ago, and it turned out that Eli did turn a corner.
In any event, I don't think the Ravens really had any other option. Flacco played lights out and won the Super Bowl in his contract year. That'll get you a huge contract. That's what you want when you draft a 1st round QB. Good for him.

The fact he is the QB of the Super Bowl Winning team instantly ups his stock by 5 but really It isn't all that hard to find QBs of Flacco's caliber
All of these QBs are of Flacco's caliber or better.
Tom Brady
Big Ben
Joe Flacco
Matt Schaub
Andrew Luck
Phillip Rivers
Peyton Manning
Eli Manning
RGIII
Tony Romo
Aaron Rodgers
Jay Cutler
Matt Stafford
Drew Brees
Matt Ryan
Cam Newton
Colin Kaepernic
I might be missing one or two.

And with the exception of Romo, Schaub, and maybe Rivers now, who are all borderline anyway, none of those teams would even consider letting their QB walk. Once you find a good QB, you keep him.
