And was trying to replace him pretty much any time he had the chance.

No one wanted him in FA last year, but all of the sudden he's worth a high second round pick and them some after he got hurt and replaced. Hilarious line of thinking by some people here.

Rich Gannon was a non factor before Marty got there, and Marty let him go without a fuss. Right call there too, eh?

Andy Reid is decent with QB's no?
He revitalized Vick.
He got the most out of McNabb.
He turned Kolb into a great piece of trade bait.
I Thought Vikings fans were the most glass half-empty fans.
Cheer up Mike

He revitalized Vick? Vick has been awful. Worse than awful. Is that what we can expect for Alex Smith? Man, sign me up!

Nobody wanted Kurt Warner before the Cardinals grabbed his washed-up ass too.
Nobody wanted James Jones in FA a few years ago either.
That doesn't mean anything.
Andy Reid and you disagree.
We'll see who was right.
Would you have rather traded a 3rd or 4th rounder for Matt Flynn?

No, he didn't suck his entire career.
2005- He was miserable. But it was his rookie year, so we can excuse that.
2006- He was slightly below average. I guess that doesn't count as sucking.
2007- He was awful. He started seven games. He had 2 TDs, a sub 50% completion percentage, and average 130 yards per game.
2008- He was hurt all season. But in the preseason, he got beat out by JT O'Sullivan. If you get beat out by JT O'Sullivan, you suck.
2009- He got beat out by top-20 QB Shaun Hill. He later got the job back. He was average.
2010- He was average. 49er fans actually called for David Carr. Troy Smith was actually chosen to start at one point over Smith.
He was pretty good the last two years. But even after taking the team to a conference championship game, they tried to replace him. Smith has vacillated between horrible and average his entire career. Nothing he has done justifies such a high price tag.

One season..... don't forget the magical 2010 season with the 100+ passer rating, with just 6 Ints.
That was coming off years of rust..... that's not revitalized?
I know it went downhill from there.....

My main problem with the trade is the value. Alex Smith is a slightly above average quarterback who's 30 years old, not a player you invest one second round pick, let alone perhaps two, in. A fourth or a fifth would have been right.
That being said, I'm not buying into this doom and gloom stuff regarding Smith as a player. As I said before, I do think he is slightly above average, and will be able to man the ship until the Chiefs finally decide to invest in a young quarterback. I know people are saying he's horrible, but looked good because of his running game, defense, etc. I don't think its really that simple.
Smith played pretty well these past two seasons for them. Not phenomenally, but decently enough. And I don't think the quarterback position is so simple that no matter who you plug in, as long as they have talent around them they'll succeed. It's more complicated than that. I do think the coaching argument has some weight, but that's not a negative for the Chiefs, because Reid has a history of making backups/unheralded quarterbacks look decent in his offense.
Overall, I dislike the fact that they got Smith, but at a price that seems to imply they're delaying addressing the need for a young, talented quarterback. But I don't think Smith is a horrible player as he's been described here, and I do think he'll play decently enough to where wins and losses won't be able to placed solely on him. They certainly overpaid, and I don't think he'll lead them anywhere great, but that doesn't mean he'll tank them either.

Alex isn't nearly as bad as some people suggest he is but when people like Abaddon overrate him it causes people to go the other way so i guess i understand where some of the hate is coming from.
I would say he's near the average in terms of NFL starting QB's, around that 16 range. You could quibble on a few QB's here and there and say he's slightly below or above average but that range is a pretty solid guess.
If the reported trade of a 2013 2nd and 2014 3rd is true....well, i don't think he's worth that because i doubt Alex can be an effective long-term starter. He's a solid but limited guy. His best role is probably what he did for the 49ers- start for 1-2 years and then develop a guy behind him. But this trade says the Chiefs value him as a long-term guy. Which i think is a mistake, but w/e...
I still wish him all the best. He's an absolute class act and a great guy off the field. He deserves to be successful and if any coach besides Jim Harbaugh could do it, its Andy Reid.

That season was a fallacy. He was outstanding the first 7 games (really six games because he got injured in one). Thanksgiving hit. All six of those interceptions came in the last five games. He was good for less than half a season. That is not revitalized.

This is my problem. The last few posts are basically saying he wasn't worth what we gave up and he probably isn't a long term solution.
Then what is the ******* disconnect between us? I AGREE. He isn't a long term solution, he won't take the Chiefs anywhere, and we gave up PREMIUM PICKS FOR HIM.
It's like I'm taking crazy pills here.

What "disconnect"? Were either of the those posts directly arguing against you, or were they simply stating the posters' opinion?
You might be taking crazy pills here.

LOL at more bullschit...... you guys just throw it and think if it sticks, it's right?
Alex Smith is 28 years old.
Brandon Weeden is a year older & the genius Holmgren took him in the 1st round last year.
Brees is 34.
Brady is 35.
Manning is 37 in 3 weeks.
Alex Smith has plenty of shelf life left so to even throw that out there is garbage. And to lie and say he's 30 when he's actually 28, well...... oops right?
Fact is age won't have anything to do with this becoming a good or bad deal for KC.
If I'm a Chiefs fan right now, with this crop of QBs in the draft, I'm very happy I got a QB who's seen NFL defenses for 6 years, has the skills that made him a #1 overall pick, and has some playoff wins under his belt, as opposed to reaching for a less-better QB who might totally bust and will need some time to understand NFL defenses.

You just named 3 elite QB's. Alex Smith is not elite. They are completely irrelevant. Look at some average QB's and see when they start declining.

Don't even put Brady, Manning and Brees in the same sentence as Alex Smith.

Alex Smith turns 29 in a few months. And I always base my judgments on what are and aren't good moves based on what the Cleveland Browns do.

Yes, I intentionally lied hoping to fool all of DC into agreeing with me.
I thought while scanning I had saw him listed as that, and I couldn't be bothered to go confirm it. But if you want to believe its an intentional conspiracy, more power to you.
As for age not having anything to do with the value, that's simply not true. For potentially two second round picks, they got a quarterback who will start the season at 29. Had they decided to keep them, they could've gotten two quarterbacks with similar potential, if not more, in their early twenties.
