Default Pass Interference in the NFL

With the NFL telling refs to reenforce the after 5 yards rule I have a feeling it's going to be hard to watch football this season. The first games of the preseason have been hard to watch. I don't understand why were back at this place again. I was thinking after last year we got to a nice give and take. But it's so uneven right now. I'm not joking that its hard to watch. Throwing a 9 should be done by a offense at least once every 5 plays. It's more of a 75% change you'll get a Rec or a PI.

Sorry I had to vent. As someone who likes D this just hurts.

We can all thank Richard Sherman and Seattle for this.

There's no other reason for this crackdown.

Many of y'all accused them of being muggy the past few years. The league finally couldn't ignore it anymore after reviewing thousands of hour of film.

The word was out: more and more teams were going to copy the Hawks with their illegal contact, clutch & grab, hold, quick tug methods..... glad the league is trying to put a stop to it, once again.

This happened a decade ago after Little Bill's Patriots got away with systematically cheating too.

Again, you can't blame the players, the team for doing what they can to perform better. You CAN blame the zebra's for letting it be gotten away with so often, they continued to do it.

Now, this preseason at least, we are seeing the negative result of it: super duper ticky-tacky. Annoying flags all the time.

You're glad the league is trying to stop it? GTFO!

They should erase the illegal contact rule - get it the **** out of the game. It's for pussies who like watered down football. Call the holds; that's fine. But college football does just fine with no illegal contact rule in place.

If you can't figure out how to pass when the refs allow the DB's to play football, run the ball. If you can't run the ball, GTFO!

Pure garbage.

I really think the league's strategy to grow the game through offense to cater to the FF type fan really has this whole thing backwards. Those fans aren't going to leave at this point due to less offense.

Do you know who will leave? Casual Fans, particularly female ones, who have no idea what the hell is going on because of how many plays are nullified due to flags on rules they neither see nor understand. Their biggest issue is the pace of the game, and the relative difficulty of understanding football when you're trying to learn. So creating rules that make it harder to jump right in and understand the game really sucks.

My GF effortlessly took up hockey, but really had no interest in learning football because there are too many rules. When you try to explain hockey to them, you essentially need to explain 4 things: what a scoring play is, offsides, icing, and if something looks like it is unfair it is a penalty. Try thinking about how nuanced football is. Adding this extra dimension of flags to someone who has a rudimentary understanding of the game just confuses them.

Let them play, it'll be better for the growth of the game.

PI needs to be nerfed. Spot of the foul call is way op on such a subjective situation. Really hope this isnt how the actual season is going to turn out, because it has gotten out of hand.

Now I see certain coaches and/or teams coaching offensive players to clutch and flop to draw flags.

They call this illegal contact now. Contact is released exaxtly 5 yards past the LOS, at which point the corner turns to play the ball.

I call this perfect defense.

Depends. If he's still clutching him when the ball is in the air it should be defensive holding. Contact and holding are different and should be officiated as such.

But it went both ways. Doug Baldwin initiated contact near the endzone and drew a penalty on the defense.

Create two different penalties. Intentional Pass Interference where you mug someone it's a spot foul. Unintentional DPI for other penalties that mirrors the NCAA rule as a spot foul or 15 yards.

I know that Mike Nolan proposed that idea when he was HC of the 49ers. It was squashed. Not sure why. It makes sense.

It was squashed, because they want the officials to make less judgement calls - not more.

The college rules for DB's are much better for the game than the NFL rules. College football is better in almost every way. The big difference is the talent level, and there's obviously nothing that college can do to combat that. Aside from the better players, though, the college game is set up much better than the professional game - in just about every way.

Should note that I am not at all addressing player compensation with that comment. I'm just talking about the rules between the lines.

If the alternatives are what we have now or the NCAA rule, we're screwed. I know a lot of people prefer the NCAA rule for it to be 15 yards, but then we get a situation where when a DB is burnt he just tackles the WR to take 15 yards versus a bigger play. I don' see why 2 versions isn't feasible. Will people *****? Of course they will. Will refs get some wrong? Of course they will (so make it reviewable if this is the concern).

Interesting note on the way they're reffing the game. If you look at QB's YPA's this preseason, they're off the charts.

CHI vs JAX saw Henne average over 7.5, Cutler over 8.0, and Bortles average 9.4.

NE vs PHI saw Matt Barkley average 11, Mark Sanchez average 9.8, Foles average 8.1, Brady average 8.1, and Mallett average 8.4.

In the TEN vs NO game, Mallet averaged 10.8 YPA, and Griffin averaged 9.4.

Maybe it's because the D's are still adjusting, but these numbers seem awfully high.

Not quite. If the ball is in the air, it's either pass interference or not. You can't flag someone for defensive holding (except lineman) if the ball is in the air.

If the ball is not in the air, it can be defensive holding or illegal contact. If there is contact passed 5 yards, but not holding - then it is illegal contact. If there is holding anywhere, it is holding.

The five yard rule will be gone soon, at least for perimeter players. I'd be willing to bet anything it gets changed to "eligible receivers may only be engaged within five yards of the LOS IF they initiate the contact and they may never be contacted after five yards of the LOS."

That's the natural progression of this current focus if scoring doesn't increase and a defense-first team wins the Super Bowl again.

It's all crazysauce.

Contact should be mandated everywhere to reduce the ability to create separation = fewer concussions. BUT, I can't wait to watch Gronk rape teams because no one can cover him in the Redzone without molesting him.

I'd like to see the rules relaxed, but the biggest thing is consistency.

If a team commits the penalty 10 times in a row, it should be called 10 times in a row.

DPI was already ridiculous before they added this nonsense to make it even worse for the defense. Breathing on a receiver is probably grounds for a flag.

You have them cracking down on a rule after a year ( Last year ) that saw a QB break the TD record an offense that broke almost every record. I just don't get it. The extra flags will slow the game down, piss off non hardcore fans.

Every time a Manning led team gets the crap kicked out of them by a physical defense they do this nonsense.

So according to Terry Blount, Carroll said the NFL admitted the call on Simon was wrong. That's a good sign I guess...

They're just being overly sensitive in the pre-season.

If they continue to call all those holding plays, the casual fan will turn off their TV's and a lot of others too.

We could see 60 point games if CB's absolutely cannot touch a WR. Just a complete joke.
