This is actually pretty big news.

Vandy was arguably the best in the country (certainly one of the best).

Fisher has done an excellent job in his 2 years on the job also imo. McGloin is starting in the NFL and Hack is looking like a stud.

I wonder if both have bigger jobs lined up somewhere else.
Is it for sure that they left on their own? I saw this earlier but it wasn't clear if they were fired or not.

This will probably further upset the Shazier fans, but in addition to linebacker of the year, Chris Borland won the Nagurski-Woodson award for the B1G's Defensive Player of the Year.

Braxton Miller is Offensive Player of the year, Hackenberg is Freshman of the Year, and Dantonio is Coach of the Year.

Indeed. I think Dantonio over Urban was even worse, though.

Borland is better than Shazier. Shazier had better stats because he played all year.

The position he plays, the talent he's surrounded with, and the number of plays the OSU defense is on the field compared to UW all contribute to his stats being better than Borland's as well.

I know I'm biased for Wisconsin players, which is why I have tried to stay out of the discussion for who is better. Shazier is a great player for sure and I wouldn't have been upset if he won, regardless of my opinion.

Like I said, I think Dantonio winning Coach of the Year is worse than Borland over Shazier.

Dantonio winning COY in itself isn't really a joke, but the fact that Meyer didn't win it is the joke. In any other year, what Dantonio did with MSU is easily deserving, but Meyer should have won and everyone except the voters knows it.

They should award these things after the B1G Championship game.

The voters do know it.

They seem hold OSU to a different standard for some stupid freaking reason.

I'm fine with Borland winning some awards, I just think the B1G awarsds are a joke for the most part.

Shazier had more stats because he played more games...

I guess we should give awards to players that are hurt and sitting on the bench in anticipation of their potential, not actual production. I'm only extending your argument, BF.

Like I said, Borland is a stud, and I'm fine with him winning. But I feel bad for Shazier because he is the only one in the OSU back 7 that has consistently played great this season.

No I'm just saying that Borland is a better player. I watched every Wisconsin and every Ohio State game this year.

When Borland played, he was better than Shazier.

Fair or not coaches are absolutely judged on off-the-field stuff as well as on the field. Meyer wasn't going to win it this year with the specter of his alleged misconduct at Florida. Between Aaron Hernandez, reports of him covering up assaults, a drive-by shooting, and failed drug tests he wasn't going to win it unless they absolutely had to. Dantonio was a viable candidate that let them steer clear.

I don't have an issue with Borland winning although like you said can't help but feel sorry for Shazier.

10000% agree with bearsfan though. These should come AFTER the championship game.

Considering the talent of each team, isn't Michigan State going undefeated in the B1G more impressive than Ohio State doing the same?

How about last year when they went undefeated after going 6-7 the year before? O'Brien won it but Penn State went 8-4 and lost to Ohio and won 9 games the year before. They won fewer games than they did the season prior and he still won it.

Ohio State won 25 in a row. That's what seperates Meyer and D'Antonio this year.

Agreed. I never really got the Shazier hype. As far as I am concerned the dude gets over hyped just because he happens to be the best LB at OSU in what is a historically very weak LB corps for us.

Whatever. You can argue that Borland is better or whatnot, but Shazier is an animal, makes more plays in the backfield than any linebacker we've had in decades, and hits like a truck with incredible range. Awesome player. He's worth the hype. The only thing is he is very aggressive and has a few missed tackles or bad plays now and then.

Really?

I haven't had much time to diagnose players this year and haven't payed much attention to predraft hype (Graduated, got married, moved, started a carrier all in the last 7 months). I've really only had time to watch games when I have time and I really don't see much from him that pops for me.

He is playing on an unstable defense who is on the field for huge portions of time during some games and again he is probably the best player on that defense so he is certainly getting the stats that might otherwise be recorded by other players.

I don't know if he makes more plays or as much of an impact as the corps that had guys like Carpenter, Hawk or Laurinaitis. He certainly doesn't do more than Spielman and that was only about 2 decades ago; I know that 2 still pluralizes but you make it sound like we have been wanting at the position since before we were born.

Even stat-wise he is pretty even with Laurinaitis in his final year:
Shazier - 121 tackles 6 sacks 2 FF 0 int
Laurinaitis - 130 tackles 4 sacks 1 FF 2 INT

JL didn't have 21 tfls (and counting) in a season, or 80+ solo tackles. Shazier has 4 FFs this year too. JL was a MIKE, Shazier plays WILL and blitzes off the edge a lot. Completely different types of players.

Obviously. It's a hard comparison but when you talk impact on the game I felt like when we needed a play JL was there. Maybe it's just hindsight goggles but I felt like JL had way more impact than Shazier does.

JL was also playing on a better defense where more guys were getting to the ball carrier. He might have had more on a defense like this where he would have been required to make more of the tackles. Also ESPN has Shaz with 2 FF

I'm not trying to put Shaz down. He has done a wonderful job for us this season. I just don't know if he is that much better than some of our recent star LBs and I don't understand all the hype around him with the awards etc. I was shocked when I saw Scott had him as a first rounder to the Bengals.

Good news! Brandon Scherff returning for his senior season!

Iowa now returning 3/5 OL makes me oh so happy in the pants.

Ready for NFL return, Bill O'Brien draws interest from Vikings, Texans

For some reason, I thought he was going to stick it out through the suspension.
Can't be mad at him, I guess. I surpassed all expectations I had for him; game wise and with recruiting.

I don't doubt that O'Brien could take a look at the NFL again, but the rationale LaCanfora provides doesn't make any sense.

1) Those restrictions have gotten better, not worse, so why would that change anything this year?

2) O'Brien pushed those assistants out the door with the support of the school. Why would this make him more likely to leave?

It definitely feels like he's going to to make the jump to the NFL at some point.

Yea, this article is pretty terrible and full of falsities. O'Brien wasn't close to leaving last year. Restrictions got lessened, and are expected to be lessened again during the offseason. His new contract made the buyout for leaving to the NFL more manageable but it is still pretty steep ($7 million) until after the 2014 season, when it drops down to $3ish. The article said he "lost" 3 staffers recently, when only two left, and, like you said, they were pushed out.

O'Brien won't be leaving Penn State this offseason. He worked with O'Leary to push really hard for the Penn State-UCF Ireland game, despite neither fan base really wanting or asking for it. Everyone is expecting the bowl ban to be lifted this offseason. O'Brien will be back for at least one year so he can get his guys into a bowl game, and I think he will end up staying 2 or 3 more years total, barring a National Championship (not gonna happen).
