Default Jerry Reese and Ozzie Newsome Do It Again

It's no wonder that these guys are widely recognized as maybe the two best GMs in the league.

They take advantage of the stupidity of other teams, wait in the weeds, and snatch up talented players that inexplicably fall through the cracks.

Case in point:

- The New York Giants get Jonathan Hankins, maybe the best or second best NT prospect in this class, at #49. This guy could easily end up as the best run-stuffing DT in this class. The Giants then grab Damontre Moore, who has top-10 college production and talent, all the way down in the third round. Moore cannot play in a 3-4 but he fits the Giants 4-3 scheme to a tee. At one point, Moore was considered a top-10 prospect in this class and getting him for only a third round pick is an absolutely steal.

- Despite picking last in every round, the Ravens managed to get quality players at every point. In the first round they grab Matt Elam, who some consider the best safety in this class. At #56, they again grab a player who many consider the best at his position - Arthur Brown, the playmaking ILB from K-State, who may end up having a better career than both Manti Teo and Alec Ogletree. And they do it yet again in the third round by snatching up talented small-school sleeper Brandon Williams, who has more talent than most DTs in this class.

It's amazing how great these GMs are at just picking talent and going BPA instead of reaching for needs like every other team in the NFL.

Agree with the Ravens draft, they've done really well. The giants day 2 was phenomenal but it doesn't entirely make up for Pugh at 19, still think that was one of the worst value picks in this draft.

Tom Telesco in San Diego in his first draft as GM.

DJ Fluker
Manti Te'o
Keenan Allen

Impressive.

And I'm disappointed that Ted Thompson isn't mentioned here. He lives for the draft.

Slow down on the Arthur Brown hype. He was a small LB in college, he's going to be a small LB in the pros. Nice player, future starter but he won't ever IMO dominate on the NFL level. He's a run and chase guy I don't see ever being much of a factor against the run.

Ogletree>>>>>Brown.

Damontre Moore will probably ball out for the Giants and make the loss of Osi on non-issue.

Ogletree would need to learn how to tackle and not take terrible angles against the run to be as good as Brown.

Trent Baalke deserves mention here :

He traded 31 & 74 for 18 (less than chart value) to get the best safety on the 49ers board (right or wrong it's who they preferred).

He traded back from 34 for 40, 216 and a 3rd round pick in 2014.

He traded 61 & 173 to get 55 (while Ozzie Newsome moved 62, 165 & 199 to get to 56).

Impressive names, but I'm not sure that will end up being a great draft.

San Diego got a right tackle who can't pass protect, a two-down linebacker who can't cover, and a wide receiver with knee, ankle, and possible drug concerns.

No matter who the Giants and Ravens take people would slurp the picks.

Let's wait 3 years. Everyone thought the Pats knew what they were doing too.

I really like what the Ravens did. Much like the Steelers, they sit back at their selection, and always seem to take good value at their picks. Elam and Arthur Brown are plug and play starters. I was already a fan of what they were doing on the D-line with Ngata kicking inside and guys like Canty, Canty, and Arthur Jones at End so you can develop Brandon Williams there who has huge upside.

Same for Baalke. They can trade up when they need to, always stockpile picks a year out, and they have the infastructure to take rookies who don't need to play in year 1 and can swing for the fence. He's got a marvelous eye for talent and I love what he's done this year. People may not like Reid but he's going to end up being a pro bowler in that scheme, the fit is perfect.

Seattle has been doing a great job lately also, it's just funny how every year you can notice the teams who draft well and understand value and get the best picks and some franchises just never get it right.

I still think Ozzie is the best GM in football, but his drafts haven't been that great. He's made some great picks for sure, but he's had his fair share of misses. Jimmy Smith, Sergio Kindle, and Terrance Cody were all wasted picks and he's had very little success after the 3rd round.

I actually kinda like what the Bills have done. They think they have their guy, and they've given him some more weapons while picking up a couple guys who can help that D. Manuel has to work out, and you'll need to add at least one more high pick pass rusher but Bills could be a team on the rise in a year or two.

I don't like the 49ers draft at all.

Carradine was a nice pick, but the rest is pretty "bleh" for me. I don't like Reid at all and felt he was maybe the 4th best safety, if that. The other guys are just injured players they're taking fliers on, or no-names.

You make a living by being wrong about all things 49ers related or something?

Ps. I'm still waiting for your list of 10 teams that will finish above the 49ers in total D for 2013. You never answered me over at that brilliant thread.

Okay, I hate the 49ers as much as anyone, and WAAAAAAAAAYYYYYY more than most...but to say that they had a weak draft just shows that you have not brought your objectivity. I have read a lot of your stuff, ache, and in some ways you are very knowledgeable; in others, your bias blurs your vision to the extreme. But hear me when I say this...it is one thing to be a fan of your team and to hate another; that is absolutely expected. But if you take that bias with you when you give your analysis of players or teams in general, you will never gain respect from the guys on this board. You can hate the 49ers all you want; in fact, it is encouraged by many here. But that doesn't mean they suck, or that their draft sucks. It just means you hate the 49ers:-)

I hate the Niners but I'm objective 94.2% of the time.

- Reid was a stupid pick.
- Getting a 2014 3rd from the dumb ass Titans to move down 6 ******* spots was a brilliant move.
- Carradine was a smart pick.
- Patton falling was ridiculous so I'm extremely jealous there.
- McDonald, we'll see. I don't know yet about him but I'm scared just because I respect what they do.
- Lattimore wasn't THAT special before the injury, so as a rival it's not a pick that really hurts me. Carradine does, this one, not so much - they are always going to have a good RB behind that OL and Lattimore is good but not some dynamo I'm worried about (and this is assuming he comes back as a similar player he was).
- I'm not gonna predict anythign about Lemonier or Dial but if my team made those picks I'd be very happy.

So basically a mixed bag for me - which is what the vast majority of draft classes turn out to be. In fact, the order of likelihood for classes, despite draft day optimism EVERY fan/gm/kiper/mayock/writer/team has is as follows:

1) Mixed bag
2) Really bad
3) Real good class (maybe one or two starters or one all-pro)
4) Hit on more than 50% of picks and have a studly class.

The Patriots need to rob a 3rd world country and pay Ozzie Newsome to come to NE. I can't imagine what Belichick could do if he could get good players.

He was considered a potential feature back. Some people debated if he or Trent Richardson were better.

The kid was legit. If he returns to that, it's a steal.
