Options at FB are Owen Marecic who is taking a physical soon, converting Anthony Dixon if he can block, or putting Dobbs in at FB.

Losing Miller really hurts. He has been a great receiver for a converted DL.

I could say the same thing about the 49ers giving up only 30 points once all season long to an opponent. A fluke.

And the Eagles also gave up 50 points to Denver. And 30 to San Diego. And how many good defenses have the Bears or Eagles faced where they put up 30 points?

I'm not saying that SF can't get railed on like that, but the probability of it happening isn't high. And I'm not sure what Seattle has to do with the point I'm making. I wasn't comparing SF's defense to them. And just because they may not give up a certain amount of points to a specific team, that doesn't mean SF's secondary will be exposed and give up 30 + points to the Bears or Eagles. And who in the secondary has been a liability this year? And who has been exposed? Maybe you can say Asomugha, but he was gone after the first few games. Brock has replaced him and played at a high level.

I understand what you are "just saying", but you aren't doing a good job of giving your opinion merit.

Like in the WC round, I could easily see the Eagles hanging 28+ on that secondary at home with a really good game plan that catches them by surprise, especially since the Eagles have the O-Line capable of shutting down the 49ers pass rushers.
Those guys are good defensive backs, though. Have you been watching or just going off of name recognition? They just aren't the Seahawks secondary, which seems to be the only secondary in the NFL that gets talked about. For good reason, but doesn't mean every other defensive backfield is junk.

They faced a good passing offense a few weeks ago in the Saints and held Brees to 300 yards and a TD in the dome. That's good enough to win that game, but we lost by 3 (23-20) points due to ineffective offensive play. Not defensive secondary play.

Eagles also made he Vikings -missing AD- offense look like a juggernaut.

The only real contenders for the Super Bowl outta the NFC are Seattle, and San Francisco. This thread was right on all along.

Carolina would be the only team who has a chance to pull off upsets, because they have a good defense.
Green Bay, Chicago, Philly & Dallas all have atrocious defenses.

But the 49ers don't have the offense to exploit those defenses. Kaepernick is not a good passer and relies on the running game and play action to complete passes. His offense is still one-dimensional and can be shut down with a good game plan even by an average defense.

It takes a great passing game to exploit those defenses. Phillip Rivers, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, etc. Matt Casel just had a hot day and their WRs are extremely underrated (Vikings).

Kaepernick is playing pretty well. Not All Pro level, but he's had a decent season. The 49ers wouldn't be 10-4 without him this year. And now that Crabtree is back he's looked better.

He wasn't shut down by an average defense last week against Tampa. Or against the Rams. Heck he played better than Drew Brees did against Seattle. And it doesn't take a great passing game to exploit the Bears or Eagles defense. They're just not very good plain and simple and no one is scared of facing them. And didn't Joe Flacco just win the Super Bowl? You don't have to be a HOF passer to win a Lombardi trophy.

If a team shuts down the run game (which the Eagles are very good at), it can blanket Kaepernick's main read and really force him to struggle. Look at what the Panthers did to him.

Okay. Look at what the Packers did to him when they shut down the run game. They got torched through the air. And the Eagles defense isn't the Panthers defense.

That's bc the Packers couldn't cover his 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th or 7th read.

And the Eagles or Bears will? Matt Cassel looked like Warren Moon last weekend.

I'm not debating that. I was just pointing out that the Packers sucked vs him bc they suck on defense.

I don't like the design of the billboard at all. I mean, at least make it look good. Just looks like a poor photoshop job.

LOL and didn't this back and forth banter start because Seahawks raised funds to fly a 12th man banner over Candlestick Park two weeks ago?

Well that was my entire point. The other poster was saying that if you stop the run the entire offense will crumble because Kaepernick will have problems passing the football. And that isn't necessarily true. Especially against a lackluster defense like Philadelphia or Chicago.

Replacing Bruce Miller...

Owen Marecic no longer wants to play football. And Trent Baalke doesn't really like him anyways. Harbaugh's his fan-boy.

The gave former DE/FB Will Tukuafu a physical.

Demarcus Dobbs and Anthony Dixon have also played fullback.

My assumption is that Anthony Dixon and Vance McDonald will get the nod, and perhaps they will utilize more 3 WR sets. Dixon actually adds the threat of running that Miller didn't bring.

Had this injury happened prior to Crabtree returning, it would've been more severe.

Eh. They'll just use extra OLmen or DTs. Harbaugh dgaf if you know it's a run. He's gonna bring in the big uglies and just plow over your defense anyway.

I appreciate that mindset of his.

But Miller was utilized ALOT in the passing game. Not necessarily as a primary option but he would often line up at WR or motion-out. He plays 60% of the snaps which is almost unheard of for a FB in today's NFL.

And sadly, the least effective aspect of the 49ers offense has been their utilization of "Jumbo" packages.

I don't like Tukuafu as an option. He's a 300 pound linemen and when he's inserted it's pretty obvious what we're going to do. He's no the H-back that Miller was who could do everything. And his run blocking wasn't that great anyways. He was really used to just push a pile. Marecic wasn't that impressive in Cleveland either, but he would at least be a better option. Dixon is looking like the best replacement at this point. I wonder if we'll continue to throw as often to the fullback with him in there though. Maybe it will force Roman and Harbaugh to be more creative. Something I've asked all year in the pass game. Start passing to the runngbacks for a change.

That's interesting. Then that makes it a big blow. Do you have any H-Backs who can fill the void?

No. Anthony Dixon is the closest thing. And the last time Miller missed time was in 2011. I think he missed two games. The run game was lackluster to say the least.

Considering how they used Miller, it seems to make the most sense for them to just get Vance McDonald on the field more.
