By the way, how impressive was the way Erin Andrews handled that!
I give her a flatout A+ for that interview.

I think all the other sideline blondes would have wilted there.
She wasn't intimidated at all.... quick response "Who was talking about you?"

As many of you suspected all along, these were clearly the best 2 teams in the NFL this season.

That NFC Title game was the de-facto Super Bowl.
Denver obviously wasn't close to matching these guys.

I give credit to Seattle for being aggressive in the off-season.

They added 3 instant key pieces in trading a precious draft pick for weapon Percy Harvin.
Obviously he was injured and hardly played. But he was a difference-maker tonight from his first carry to his kickoff return. They didn't need a young draft pick last April. Half of draft picks are busts, and most don't add that much early anyway, especially late in the round.

And they added not one but TWO proven free agents in DL Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril.

Their GM Jon Schneider just proved he was superior to his old boss Ted Thompson, who is afraid of free agency.

Bennett and Avril added more pass rush and overall ability than almost any rookie DL did this year. They may not have been Julius Peppers level signings, but they helped tremendously. And they were relatively cheap. Smart.

I give Schneider the GM of the Year award easily.

I would actually rate the Saints higher than the 49ers.

The three best teams in the NFL this year were 1.) Seahawks 2.) Saints and 3.) 49ers.

How is that Saints team, who were not very good on the road, ranked ahead of the 49ers ?

Seattle's front office has done a pretty amazing job. it'll be interesting to see how they juggle all the players they have due for big raises.

This is just speculation from me, but I could see most of these guys take the road that San Fran's guys have been doing. I could see a lot of them taking discounts to stay together and win more games.

But you are right, Thomas and Sherman deserve to be the 2 highest paid at their positions and Russell is going to get his money. Throw in guys like Marshawn, Okung, Unger, and others...

It seems like hometown discounts become a lot less likely after the players already have a Super Bowl ring.

That and you don't usually see hometown discounts coming from later round pick getting their first big deal. Is Sherman going to want to be the highest paid defensive player the NFL? Wilson is a Superbowl winning QB, those don't come cheap. And Seattle has other players that will probably want to be paid near the top of their positions.

Looking at their contracts, they should be good for next year, but come 2015, they will have to make some difficult decisions. Actually, it will happen earlier because they will want to extend some of these players before they become free agents. If they continue to draft well they will be fine, but they won't be able to keep everyone.

Who took discounts? Goldson, Morgan and Walker took the money. So did RJF so to speak. Bowman's extension was market value. A. Davis was slightly under market value but then again, he's a run-blocking RT mostly. Whitner will more than likely take the money. I don't see Aldon nor CK taking huge discounts.

Not really this off-season, but they'll have some tough decisions next off-season. Especially now that they're guys have that ring. Now they'll want the money. Avril, Okung, Unger, Wilson, Smith, Wright, Sherman, McDonald, and Thomas are all UFAs in 2015. Bennett, Tate, and Thurmond are UFAs this year. Wagner and Maxwell will be due soon as well. Most of their talent came from really two draft classes so all their guys will be due around the same time. A lot of talent was here before Harbaugh arrived so some guys were already on their second contract like Justin Smith, Staley, Gore, VD, and Willis. They're going to have to continue to draft well. But I don't see this same defense, in its entirety, returning next year....or ever.

Bowman and Justin Smith both took contracts that were friendly to the team and the plan.

If there were ever a player who screams discount to me it would be Wilson. However I do agree that Sherman seems like a guy who will wanna get paid.

I disagree with that. J. Smith signed a 2 year, 13 mil extentsion last year that was fair because he's 35 years old and he wanted to retire a Niner. He wasn't entering his prime like ALL of the Hawks FAs will be, he's at the tail-end of his career. Thats why the value is what it is. Also, because we made him the highest paid free agent acquisition back in 2007, so he had his big payday already. Again, not the same scenario as the Hawks free agents who will be looking to cash in, as most of these guys were low round picks and are making peanuts right now.

And Bowman's 5 year, 42/25 guaranteed extenstion was in line with guys like Laurinatus and Daryl Washington signed. Maybe less overall money but the guaranteed money was right there.

Disagree. The Broncos were the 2nd best team in the NFL this year. They just don't match up well with the Seahawks, whereas they would matchup relatively well vs the 49ers.

The Seahawks are possibly the only team with a combination of a great front 7 and a great secondary. The 49ers have a better front 7 but a considerably worse secondary.

Revisionist history is great and all, but just because the Seahawks were played close by SF and blew the Broncos out doesn't mean that the 49ers are better than the Broncos.

Look at it this way:

The Broncos were beaten by the Colts
The Patriots routed the Colts
The Broncos beat the Patriots

The NFL is a matchup league. Everything the Broncos do well on offense was countered by something the Seahawks do well on defense. It was a perfect storm for Seattle.

The Colts must be the best team in the league. They beat the Broncos, Hawks, and Niners.

I don't think the Broncos match-up well with any of the phsycial defenses from the NFC. But Seattle's defense is unique and with their ability along the front line and in the backend to REALLY mishandle any type of finesse offense. If your not stout enough in the trenches, they will eat you alive. If you look at the teams that gave them problems this year...Panthers, Colts, Niners, and Cards, they all match their physicality in the trenches for the most part.

Bowman is also about 500 times better than those two, so...

Congratulations to Seattle on the SB win. It sucked not being able to win it this year, but 31 teams can say the same thing every year. Can't win em all. Enjoy the feeling of being SB champions because nobody can ever take it away from the Seahawks players and fans.

On to the 2014 season. Now the 49ers (and 30 other teams) job is to win 2014-2015 Super Bowl, and be the new reigning champions. Seattle...its on!

That wasn't being said by most when he signed that extension.

No way.
That SF front line would have pressured Manning even more.

2nd best team in the league this year?

Broncos or 49ers?

Richard Sherman just admitted the Super Bowl was really the NFC Title game vs San Francisco.....
Look, SF was almost the best team last year too, barely losing to Baltimore.
They had Seattle beaten too.

Both those NFC West teams were way better and more physical than Denver.

Smart.

Every NFL GM can look great if he only has to pay his starting QB peanuts. That frees up all the extra money needed to add substantial FA's to your roster, ditto for San Fran. As long as Wilson and Kap don't reach FA, these 2 teams should easily dominate, but once Kap and Wilson have to be resigned, it will bring these 2 franchises back to reality just like Baltimore came back to reality once Flacco got the big $$$$'s.

GM's aren't afraid of FA as long as they have the money to spend and their owner allows them to spend it. Having a huge cap to spend is one thing, getting an owner to go along is a whole different ballgame.

Noticed the Niners have 6 picks in the first 3 rounds. Will be interesting to see how they use them.

In my opinion its time for us to trade up and snatch a playmaker or two that will have an immediate impact on offense. We have 13 picks, but we aren't looking to fill hole after hole. Its also not time to keep stocking picks for the 2015 draft either.
