Basically the same player, right?
If Proehl had played the Welker role in New England's system, he would've done the same thing. It can not be overstated - Welker was a product of the Patriots' system. You could plug just about any receiver in NFL history into the Welker role and they would catch 100+ passes per season. Welker is/was a journeyman-caliber WR. A #3 in any other situation.

If if's and and's were pots and pans, the whole world would be a kitchen.

The whole world is in fact, not a kitchen, however. No other receiver in NFL history has been in that role, it's been Welker. If Amendola puts up a 110 catch, 1250 yard season and Welker puts up a 40 catch, 555 yard (Proehl-type) season outside of NE, then maybe you have an argument.

I don't think it's necessarily if someone else could replace Welker, or if Welker can produce outside of new england.

The question is whether Welker was really ever considered a top WR. The answer is no. There's tons of #1's you'd take over Welker, there's even some #2.

Welker is a good player, but he's in no way a hall of famer. He's produced solid numbers over the years, but numbers don't tell the whole story.

If Welker were to play another 6 seasons, and be able to put up 6-8 thousand yards, I think then it becomes debatable

I think the problem is Wes was so reliable that he just went about his 100+ catches year in and year out and made it look routine, he is the best slot WR in the game with the emergance of the spread 3+ WR being a base formations for so many teams now Welker is easily the best slot guy in the NFL.

NO NO NO, you cant say any #1 or #2 can line up in the slot because the role is so much different. For instance you have to go across the middle with almost all of the routes you run while in the slot, it isnt about speed its about quickness, toughness and the willingness to know you are going to get clobbered by an LB outweighing you by like 50 lbs.

There are numberous WRs that physically cant take the punishment or that will get alligator arms when going across the middle.

IM NOT saying Welker is a HOF WR but he is the best Slot guy in the game and arguably of all time.

Going slightly off topic but I was at the Hall of Fame last month. I flew to Toronto from the UK to visit relatives then drove to Niagara for one night and then ontoCanton for a few days in the USA.

It has been recently refurbished and I highly recommend taking a visit. They even allow you onto the field of Fawcett Stadium for 20 mins with the proper 'Duke' football - throwing passes to family/friends and attempt field goals.

Highlight for me was the Hall of Fame gallery.

The only real knock I have against Welker are his lack of TD's. If you just look at his Patriot years, he only averaged 6 TD's a year.

Now, I do also think that as of right now, Welker is not a HOFer.
If we bring up the TD statistic, that takes out Andre Johnson from talk as well.

He is 22nd all time in receptions and 27 all time in yards, but only 56 TDs overall. By the time he is done (lets just say 3 years of 60 catches, 900 yards which is reasonable) he would be right at Top 10 all-time for receptions and yards.

I dont want to think about other teams so possible Saints for Hall of Fame candidacy are (most of these are if they keep it up style)

Drew Brees- By the time he is done, barring injury, he will be Top 3 in every major quarterbacking category, holding a few records, and having a Super Bowl ring. I would say he is a lock to get in.

Marques Colston- 0 chance he gets in, but I bring him up because if he has 3 more "average" years (by his standards), he will be Top 40 all time in receptions, yards, tds. He never gets the recognition of being "the man" at the WR position, he is a quiet guy who does his job.

Jimmy Graham- 215 catches in basically less than two full season (didnt play much rookie year, missed some time the other two). But with Brees QBing, a average of 80 catches the next 3 years wont be out of the question, which would put him near 500 catches, which would be near the top. Kellen Winslow is 6th with 529, so in just 6-7 years he could start cracking the all time greats. Id say barring a major injury he has 75% chance.

Darren Sproles- I would say maybe 2% chance, but most people don't know that if he averages 1500 all-purpose yards for the next 3 years, he will be Top 10 all time in All-Purpose yards. As of now the only other three in the category not HOFs are Tim Brown, LaDanian, and Brian Mitchell.

Jahri Evans- Consider one of the best in the league right now, and has been considered for the past 4/5 years. Hasnt miss a game in 7 years, if he continues I would say he would have a 40% chance to make it.
