Default Adrian Peterson Says He Wants Emmitt's Record

As the NFL All-Time Leading Rusher.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/95...itt-smith-2017

Quote:
Adrian Peterson has his sights on Emmitt Smith's NFL career rushing record and said he expects to break the mark in 2017, even circling a date on the NFL calendar as to when he'll accomplish the feat.

Peterson, 28, finished just eight yards shy of Eric Dickerson's single-season rushing record (2,105) last season, when he rushed for 2,097 yards. Peterson has said his goal is to reach 2,500 yards in 2013.

But he also has targeted Smith's record of 18,355 yards, and told the Star-Tribune that he expects to break the record in Week 16 of the 2017 season, even though his current pace would have him approaching the mark in Week 4 of the 2019 season.

Peterson currently has 8,849 yards. His estimate would mean it would take him 79 games to rush for the 9,507 yards needed to set the all-time rushing mark, which would require him to average 120.3 yards per game in that span.

"Whoo. That's pushing it, huh? But hey, pushing it is the only way to do it. You know it," he told the newspaper.

If Peterson does become the NFL's all-time leading rusher, he'll make history in another category as well.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Smith holds the record for most rushing yards after a player's 28th birthday with 8,195, meaning Peterson would shatter that mark if he vaults atop the all-time rushing list.
Adrian Peterson, 28, is currently 9,506 yards away from tying Emmitt Smith's all-time rushing record. However, no player in NFL history has rushed for more than 8,195 yards after turning 28.

Emmitt Smith 8,195
Walter Payton 7,118
John Riggins 6,900
Tony Dorsett 6,469
Thomas Jones 6,417

** I have to say I agree with Skip Bayless (probably the first and last time I ever type those words) from the video on the ESPN link. Peterson is already 28 years old and still needs over 9,500 yds to catch Emmitt Smith's total of 18,355. Only Emmitt and Payton have ran for more than 7k after their 28th birthday and from their 7th season onwards.

If anyone can do it though it's Superman.

Most Rushing Yds after 6 Seasons:

Dickerson - 9,915
Tomlinson - 9,176
Emmitt - 8,956
Peterson - 8,849
Sanders - 8,672
Payton - 8,386
Campbell - 8,296

Average Yards Per Game after 6 Seasons:

Dickerson - 110.2
Peterson - 99.4
Davis - 98.7
Brown 98.1
Campbell - 97.6
Sanders - 97.4
Tomlinson - 96.6
Emmitt - 96.3
James - 95.3
Payton - 94.2

If Peterson played until he's 35 he would need another 8 seasons in the NFL to catch Emmitt. That works out at 1,189 yds per season, but looking at the names above shows how tough it is for RBs to have a career beyond 30. He'll need to turn into a nuclear weapon like Barry and Jim Brown did between years 7-10 to stand a chance.

Most Rushing Yds From 7th Season onwards:

Emmitt - 9,399 in 9 seasons: 70.7 yds per game
Payton - 8,340 in 7 seasons: 82.6 yds per game
Riggins - 6,900 in 8 seasons: 69.0 yds per game
Sanders - 6,597 in 4 seasons: 103.1 yds per game
T.Jones - 6,417 in 6 seasons: 66.8 yds per game
Martin - 6,347 in 5 seasons: 83.5 yds per game
Bettis - 6,290 in 7 seasons: 63.5 yds per game

Others:
Allen - 6,092
Faulk - 5,578
Dorsett - 5,724
Simpson - 4,930
Brown - 4,853
James - 4,526
Tomlinson - 4,508
Thomas - 4,443
Dickerson - 3,344
S.Jackson - 3,428 (active)
Elway - 1,976 (yes, that surprised me too)
Alexander - 1,636

After AD coming off a great season this year after an ACL, I won't put anything past him, but there's a lot of doubt still. I hope he does it though, great guy and player.

Dickerson was such a monster his first 6 years in the league. If he never broke down, who knows how great he could have been.

That's what really stood out to me. I've always known Dickerson was a beast, but everytime I read new stats like this my mind is blown even more. Between the stat of his first 6 seasons and Sanders from 7th season on, that's just ridiculous.

I hope AD breaks the record, and hopefully he doesn't just stick around the league like a bum just to do it.

I don't see why he can't average 1,500 yards for the next four seasons, then get the last 2,849 over his last few years as a platoon back.

Either way he's going to go down as a better running back than Emmitt, so it's not a huge deal. But it would be cool to see him do it.

I think AP could become a top 5 back of all time, no question. I wish he did more in the pass game though.

AD didn't make an ass of himself the first few years of his career. So he doesn't garner the same respect or deserve the same credit given to AD. It's just how it is. Actions have consequences.

It still bugs me that Peterson fell only 9 yard short of breaking the single season rushing record last year. I know they were fighting hard to make the playoffs but you can't convince me two of Ponder's 28 attempts couldn't have been rushing attempts instead.

Well, the whole article is about him wanting to break Emmitt's mark, and in the article it talks about him wanting to hit 2500 yards in 2013. Nowhere does he mention winning games or going to the Super Bowl.

And Mightytitan is right about Chris Johnson. In the past CJ has talked about rushing for 2500 yards and was met with great controversy. The same thing happened with Corey Dillon back in the day.

He's said he wants to win a super bowl plenty of times before. Does he need to reassure us of this in every interview he does?

He "might" break Emmitt's record but 2500 yards in a season is never going to happen.

While I understand this theory, having watched the game he was 46 yards away up until the 2 minute warning. Minnesota did everything they could to get him the record and make the playoffs. If they had had one more timeout they might have given him a chance from the 11 yard line, but that's not how it worked out.

Since when does setting personal goals make you selfish? Peterson has said many times that he wants a super bowl win with the vikings. In fact, the last game of the season Peterson did not want in-game updates for his rushing stats so he would focus on winning, and not on the record.

setting a bar for yourself as a person or player does not make you a selfish person. If you're pissed because they're not handing you the ball every play, that's a different story. Peterson is definitely a team first type of player who happens to have goals.

Chris Johnson was also all talk. There's no denying his talent, but he has had one good season and the rest have been pretty average.

Not only this, but i'm sure there were games where the vikings could have handed off the ball a couple more times and he would have gotten the record that way. Peterson said himself, that if it wasn't meant to be it wasn't going to happen.

AP: 1474/rush yds season, 254/rec yds season
CJ: 1377/rush yds season, 331/rec yds season

Total yards average yards season since entering NFL:
AP: 1728
CJ: 1708

Avg touches:
AP: 321
CJ: 338

Just because CJ has been used in the passing game more than AP, doesn't mean he's a slouch in comparison

Those numbers are skewed. CJ did his season in year two and declined after that. Peterson has only gotten better and hes going into year 7. Also skewed by petersons 970 yard, 12 game season when he hurt his knee 2 years ago. He still posted a strong 4.7 and 13 YDs. Even with the season 4 games short he still gets the edge on CJ in every stat. but "per season" brings down peterson to make CJ look closer since he posted a <1000 yard season

Love this debate after CJs 2000 yard season to now Petersons 2000 yard season

I'm not saying he's on APs level right now, I'm simply stating he's not a scrub like most like to imply.

I'm still, very very upset he didn't break the single season rushing mark. I watched the entire game and wanted to be apart of history, then when he broke that long run at the end of the game I just saw that going for a TD to clinch the record, and the game to get into the playoffs. I don't think there would have been many storylines to top that, maybe ever. I have always liked him as a person and player, but I selfishly wanted to be apart of history.

Oh well, 2k rushing yards is going to be hard to come by with the way offenses are changing, it was enjoyable and remarkable to watch anyway.

He may not be a scrub but the CJ vs AD comparisons are LONG gone. They were justified and legit early on, 2009 Chris Johnson was an all-time great season. 350+ carries and still averaging over 5.5 ypc, 500+ receiving yards, 16 total TD's, that was vintage CJ. I just feel like that player is long gone while Peterson is only getting better then he was back then.

I don't think it's long gone by any means, I think alot of the CJ haters will be surprised this season after he puts up better numbers than he has the past few years.

He proved last year he can still rack up the yards, and that was playing with 9 different starting OL.

setting a bar for yourself as a person or player does not make you a selfish person. If you're pissed because they're not handing you the ball every play, that's a different story. Peterson is definitely a team first type of player who happens to have goals.

Chris Johnson was also all talk. There's no denying his talent, but he has had one good season and the rest have been pretty average.
I'm not denying that he has said he wanted to win Super Bowls, nor am I saying that he is a completely selfish player who is not team-oriented. But to me, the guy who is all about winning never talks about his own personal numbers. I remember only one time where Walter Payton did it, and that was to downplay the significance of breaking Jim Brown's all-time rushing mark.
