Default Top 5 NT's?

I've been kind of puzzled with the 3-4 side of the ball since so many guys move around so much. I have Wilfork @ 1 and after that not sure where to go since Ngata is techically a DE in the 3-4 or he'd be 1. Thoughts?

Phil Taylor is a beast. Watch out for him to have his official breakout year this year.

Stay tuned with Ngata. It looks like he's going to be playing a lot of NT this year.

Is barry Cofield now a top 5 NT? Has it gotten that average?

It's more an indictment of how little a 3-4 NT is actually on the field. As a 49ers fan, I believe the stat was less than 28% of defensive snaps last seasons.

Wilfork is probably the best NT in the league right now. Ngata has moved over to NT this year so he should help shore up the run defense.

The 49ers, and I'm sure many other 3-4 teams are rarely in their base (odd) front. Because so many teams employ 3 or more WRs they are in a Nickel package the vast majority of the time. They essentially add a CB in place of the NT.

Using the projected 2013 depth chart...

Base 3-4

CB Tarell Brown ----- S Eric Reid ----- S Donte Whitner ----- CB Carlos Rogers
OLB Aldon Smith --- ILB Patrick Willis --- ILB NaVorro Bowman --- OLB Ahmad Brooks
DE Justin Smith ---------- NT Ian Williams ---------- DE Ray McDonald

Nickel 4-2-5

CB Tarell Brown --- S Eric Reid --- S Donte Whitner --- CB Carlos Rogers --- CB Nnamdi Asomugah
ILB Patrick Willis ------------- ILB NaVorro Bowman
DE Aldon Smith -- DT Justin Smith -- DT Ray McDonald -- DE Ahmad Brooks

This is a big reason why they utiliize versatile DTs as well as can add different types of pass rushers a la Aldon Smith, Corey Lemonier, and Tank Carradine.

But there are teams that run nickel out of a 3-4 base, correct? 3 DL 3LB, 3CB, 2 S, correct?

So i guess the question remains, who is the best 5 NT's in the NFL and is that the hardest position to fill in the league?

Same here. He won't be on the field much, but he should be an improvement over Sopoaga.

Well Wilfork likely plays less nose in a 34 than Ngata since the Pats have been a base 4 man front for a few years with Wilfork playing all across the line. And even disregarding that, putting Ngata above Wilfork at this point doesn't make sense unless it is based off 3 years ago. Ngata hasn't been the dominant force he once was and Wilfork has been playing his best football recently. He is a top 3 interior defensive lineman with Watt and Atkins right now

I think all things considderred a HEALTHY (key word) Ngata on par with Wilfork however, Wilfork is one of the Best NT's ever in my mind. His switch to the 4-3 is the only thing that would drop him in a rankings situation, also Ngata plays a lot of DE too it evens out I suppose.

Still can anyone provide a list of the top 5 NT's? It's not an easy thing to do with teams moving schemes and players around.

Paul Soliai was beasting it a couple years ago but Miami doesn't really use the 34 front anymore either. Lots of teams are moving back to 43 again, not as many pure NTs going around.

I think you could make an argument it's the hardest on defense to fill.

I think one could also make the argument that it's the easiest.

It all depends on what your team is acting it's NT to do.

I think in some ways that big space eating NT is becoming slightly outdated due to the evolution of the game. This is why guys like Ngata and Wilfork are so good because when they are in the game it isn't a hinderence even if the other team passes. But it's not just NTs, it's thumping LBs like Brandon Spikes or big and slow safeties etc. Personnel dictates so much these days which is why you see so many guys being able to move around. I don't think a list of the top 5 "true" NTs would be that impressive IMO

Its a mix of true good NTs being rare and the increasingly passing game of the NFL making them less useful. 34 Teams still shift into 4 downline men in nickle which teams now run a ton with all the 3 wr sets.
