Austin was horribly overdrafted. 8th overall, and to trade up to get him? Didn't make sense to me at all.

Well, this subject of this thread has been a major sore spot with Rams fans all year. The Rams DID try to run 3 + 4 wide along with a spread 'em out passing game earlier in the year and it failed miserably.

After the collapse against the Whiners Fish went back to what he knows best and began to feature the running game and play action passing. We have actually played better in that style of offense but, alas, there ain't many plays available for a 5'8" 174# receiver who can't block. So, 'ol T.A. is not getting the snaps that he was earlier in the year. And now with Sam gone for the rest of the year he won't be developing any chemistry with him any time soon. So, that stinks....

At any rate many of you have accurately portrayed what has been going on with Austin when he has been on the field. It has been a combination of Schotty 's schitty schemes and play calling along with Austin being among the league leaders in dropped passes that has contributed to his malaise.

Schotty seems obsessed with having TA only run routes within 5 yds of the LOS. The kid rarely ever runs the full route tree. Well, make that never.....I'm getting the feeling that the Son of Marty just doesn't have a clue what to do with a guy like Austin. However, having said that I am saving most of my ire for Jeff Fisher and Les Snead.

What were these clowns thinking when they took a guy that simply does not fit the philosophy of the HC let alone the offense he likes to run. Some think that the Rams will try and return to a spread 3 + 4 wide passing attack next year when Sam is back. But I have my doubts. Serious doubts....Why would it work next year when it was an abysmal failure this year? And will Fish remain patient while the offense tries to work out the kinks and can Schotty come into the 21st Century? These are all questions that remain to be answered.

Meanwhile Tavon Austin is being wasted on a team that can't use him and doesn't know what to do with him.

Man, always a gas being a Rams fan......

That's what I kept saying about Titus Young this season.

It can't be that hard to see what the saints do with Darren Sproles at RB and what the Pats did with Wes Welker at WR and run those plays for Austin.

I don't want to beat a dead horse, but Schotty is incapable of doing such a thing. He has zero creativity.

Which is exactly why it would work. It doesn't take much creativity to steal plays.

It sucks. Cause Austin is one hell of a football player. He's never going to be a normal WR. Needs to have a Austin playbook. I'd love to be a OC and come up with plays for this guy to run. Best part of getting him the ball is anywhere on the field he could take it for a house call.

I've only seen him in bits and pieces (i know he has had a few returns called back by penalties) but from what i've seen, i haven't been to impressed with him as a punt returner either. Can't blame the OC for that one...

So if he isn't doing anything due to the coaches, then why the heck did they trade up to get a player they don't know how to use?

Funny how it's Brian Schottenheimer's fault that Austin isn't producing, but when fans talk about how well Zac Stacy is playing, nobody says a word about Schottenheimer.

If a coordinator sucks, that doesn't mean that some guys won't still be able to overcome their coordinators incompetence. Is that really a difficult concept to understand or are you just doing your usually aggressive contrarian thing?

It's not hard to be contrarian to dime-a-dozen fan logic: Only talk about coordinators when you need an easy scapegoat.

If Tavon Austin isn't getting at least 10-20 touches a game, that's the OC's fault.

He isn't doing anything with the touches he does get? Why would they give him more? Players actually have to prove they're good enough.

But of course it's OC's fault!

I guess it's the coaches fault for picking him in the first place. He was overdrafted.

I thought 8 was way too high for Austin honestly. I remember when his hype was first building and I was thinking he would be a great pickup in the late 1st-round for a team with some pieces in place on offense that needed a game-breaker who could be used as a movable chess piece. Then his hype got out of control and the Rams drafted him 8th overall like he was going to be a go-to receiver, which he is certainly not. He would have been a better fit in an offense that already had a go-to receiver and involved some read-option concepts...He maybe coulda been a much bigger contributor for a team like the 49ers, Seahawks or Panthers. He could still be great in STL, but that offense is far from a complete product. I didnt think Austin would live up to his hype, but Im surprised that he has become such a non-factor.

He's too small. He can't take the punishment in the middle of the field, and he can't flank out wide. He's a quick slot who can go deep.

But that's a very limited skillset. You don't take that in the top 10. I know he was electric in college but that's college. In the NFL everyone is fast.
of course you take it way too far...I just said top 10 was way too high for him...But 3rd round please he was way too talented to not go in the first round. of course he has some limitations, but if he was in a better situation he would be doing well.
