My college roommate put it better than anybody else I've ever heard: "Just like the rest of your body gets sick, sometimes your brain gets sick."

To the people saying he is throwing away an golden opportunity by bailing on the team.

Quote:
Martin turned down the opportunity to be the first fourth-generation African-American Harvard student in history to become a scholar-athlete at Stanford. So for the last three years his parents, both Harvard grads, watched him do something he only could have done at Stanford -- protect the blind side of quarterback Andrew Luck. Martin was named first team All-Pac-10 in 2010 and first-team All Pac-12 in 2011. And there is still a chance he will attend Harvard some day, to get a legal degree.
Why bother staying with Miami to only get harassed? He may wholeheartedly have bigger plans in life than to play in the NFL and this situation is allowing him to realize that it now rather than later.

It's a difficult decision for a lot of people, and it's an event that people can and often will look back with regret on.

I had a decision to make the day after my dad passed away. I could continue the chase for the PhD and all the stuff that comes with it, or walk away for a a life outside work, make 3-4x what I get now and actually get down time. I chose the PhD, and will have to make another decision in 2 years.

I have 2 friends who had to make a similar decision in their respective careers. One of them gave up on the dream for a personal life, another is going back into a related field.

As for Martin staying with Miami, the question is whether his heart is in it or not, if he wants it enough. He's already reached a level that most athletes do not get close to touching. In a lot of cases, the workplace setting is a factor in how quickly a person burns out, and some time off is needed to regain passion for their job.

I don't know much about him but maybe he is to smart for the NFL. He went to Stanford so maybe he is just one of those really smart guys that doesnt mesh with other people well.

Martin paid $15K for others to take a trip to Vegas because he didn't want to deal with his teammates.

Kind of a funny line but that might just be the case. It might be that he is just intellectually superior to clowns like Incognito where he just can't deal with it. Wouldnt be the first guy who's heart isn't in the game.

As for the other guy if he's at fault in something like this give him the help wanted section of the sunday paper and say so long.

Adam Beasley@AdamHBeasley 44m I reported last week that there were other issues, with resentments being harbored between other players. It's about this.

Adam Beasley@AdamHBeasley 44m
I can now report this: This is a HUGE issue inside the Dolphins' locker room, and not just limited to this situation.

Adam Beasley@AdamHBeasley 44m
One young defensive player, whose privacy I'm protecting, has literally gone broke because he's been pressured to pay for older players.

Adam Beasley@AdamHBeasley 43m
They've gotten sucked into the Miami lifestyle, and the veterans are using the younger players as an ATM, I'm told.

Yeah. This is not okay.

Gotta love how Incognito's response to this seemed to imply that he wanted a physical confrontation with reporters. That's a great way to show that you aren't a knuckle dragging moron.

So it's pretty clear here that Incognito is the bad guy here, and Martin is not to blame, other than perhaps being a little on the soft side compared to most players.

Ummm no. Martin is being the smart person here and in no way "soft". Philbin should be fired for this.

lol @ the younger players getting used as ATMs. The whole situation is ridiculous. Only themselves to blame if they are getting abused like that.

Not really. It's easy to get intimidated physically and socially as a rookie. It's a new environment and new people. They are probably just trying to fit in and keep a job.

Now that the story comes out I can totally understand it. There's an expectation that rookies will pay for some things like veterans, like take the team out to a huge expensive dinner but that's about it. These players were apparently using the rookies for everything because they had already pissed their money away, trips to Vegas, car payments etc. I can see how it happens because you say yes to dinner, then you say yes to another and then it just escalates. His teammates are dicks and I'm now completely on his side.

As an aside, I've been on sports teams, I'm part of a fraternity, I've been hazed. I still think it's beyond stupid and doesn't form brotherhood or togetherness or anything, it only builds resentment. In Russia where the military uses hardcore hazing on new recruits the divisions that hazed the most were the first to break down under fire and flee in Chechnya. It's counterproductive and in rare cases can be very harmful.

Incognito has been suspended indefinitely by the Dolphins.

Judging by him trying to fight on twitter this should be fun.

Yes, really. Getting taken advantage in the beginning is understandable, going broke off of it is not. There is a line to draw at some point.

Well that escalated quickly...

Interesting. Where there's smoke, there's usually fire. Wonder if the story will go as deep as the murmurs we already heard suggested.

Richie Icognito is a walking, talking piece of human excrement. He's a dirty player on the field, and it's no surprise that he's a scumbag off the field.

Lets plot his ultimate demise.

I still say this starts at the top, and it's because no one respects their head coach.

He's as soft as a pillow made out of a cloud soaked in Downy.

You can't have a lineman who needs a a hug every time someone picks on him. He's a big wuss. That's fine. There's a place for people like that...but that place is not playing a game that requires violence.

Ritchie Incognito is an NFL player. Jon Martin is not. It's a game for gorillas with a violent streak.

Bro, it's a job. It doesn't matter that it's football. No one deserves to be harassed in the workplace. God forbid we act civilized and respect one another. No, no, we have to separate the men from the boys because football says so.

Internet tough guys are the bestest! No really you are an idiot.

Incognito getting suspended by the team says a lot about the situation. Judging by all the reports this isn't going to end well for him. Sad that this type of culture developed at Miami :/

Some "controlled" hazing is fine i.e. carry my pads during training camp and then once you fully make the team the hazing is done. This type of situation is absurd.
