Default CB's That Could Project To FS

Who are the guys this year that you think can transition to Safety in the NFL?

Dennard can flat out cover. He won't run the best forty time but he's gotta stick at corner.

Roby, on the other hand, is physical and instinctual but after his performance against Wisconsin I have questions about his man coverage skills and think he's best suited for safety.

I need to watch more of those prospects. Roby and Dennard being both Big Ten guys has allowed me to see more of them.

Roby was like glue last year, he was slacking most of this season but the past few games I think he's finally turned it around. He's so physical and is great in run support and has elite speed, I think he stays at corner but if he gets beat too much safety or nickel would be good fits.

I still think that Justin Gilbert would make one helluva FS. As a CB he is a decent coverage guy who has the athleticism at the college level to make up for his inconsistent technique and may struggle at the next level unless he cleans up his footwork / hips out of the back peddle. Also looses the ball when in the chase position... at his best when he can keep his eyes in the backfield and attack the ball. Moving back to safety plays into his strengths allowing him roam and play the ball.

Ifo Ekpre-Olomu could make a nice Eugene Wilson or Devin McCourty impersonation.

Charles Sawyer has been Ole Miss' best corner for a few years, he has spent some time at FS as well. He will be a mid-late rounder most likely, he got a DUI in September so that will not help him but he is a talented cover guy who can make plays. Not very physical, but he will get a shot in the NFL. I could see someone giving him a try at safety.

BJ Lowery. He plays corner at Iowa. Iowa CBs often end up as safeties.

He's absolutely perfect for safety. He has shown the ability and athleticism to be a decent corner (a very good one at the collegiate level) but his ability to make plays against the run is remarkable. He played whip LB (a kind of S/LB hybrid) as a true freshman. As a sophomore he played roughly half of the time at CB and the other half at whip LB. He played corner exclusively as a junior and senior, save against Georgia Tech. this season when he played whip in order to combat the option. Although he battled injury as a junior and senior, he flashed a ton of ability as a sophomore and through the first half of this season.

He locked up Amari Cooper and intercepted AJ McCarron in the first game of the season and was an superstar against Georgia Tech. when he played whip. Good size at almost 6'0 and 190 pounds and he throws his body around. One of four brothers who will/have/are playing in the NFL. Our defense this season has not been the same without him. To see his prowess against the run, just watch our game against GT. Only need watch the first two or three series to understand what I mean.

Exum used to play S for us but lacks/lacked the awareness for it despite being an intelligent guy. He's better on an island but he is so physical that he gets called for a lot of PI and that won't fly in the league. I'm not sure I see much of a spot for him in the NFL unless he gets some outstanding coaching.

100% agree with this. Big Fuller fan. One of my favorite players and the "safest" DB pick in the draft to me.

You sound awfully excited about him. Anything more to add than what BamaFalcon already said?

Good stuff Bama! I thought there was a chance of him coming out last year, so I had him in a couple of Cowboys mocks for the last draft. But that was a CB. This talk of him at S has gotten more than my ears a little perked up. lol

I think Dennard might surprise on his 40. I remember watching him catch Taylor Martinez from behind rather easily last year. Taylor can fly.

I think he is a CB, first and foremost and will be a pretty solid one at that. Not really a press man guy, but strong in off man and zone. But if you can find a couple other good CBs, he's a good guy to put back at FS (because of his tackling ability and toughness) and do a lot of things with. Deep middle, come down and cover the slot, blitz from the slot, cover a TE. Versatile player.

Yeah I'd be surprised if he runs over a 4.52. Also wouldn't expect under 4.45 though.

I wondered if he was related to Vincent Fuller. Vinny was a quality player for Tennessee, and allowed Jim Schwartz to be creative with playcalls. Fuller would go in at NB, but he'd drop deep for FS Michael Griffin and Griff would blitz. Couldn't hold his own on the boundaries, but as far as playing inside or FS, he was a great player to have. Smart guy too. I believe he followed Schwartz to Detroit, but I dunno if he's still there or not.

Of the top guys, I'd say Justin Gilbert (ugly backpedal), Loucheiz Purifoy (below-average response time to breaks), Aaron Colvin (not great in coverage), and Antone Exum (build) may be the best-suited to transition.

All about this!!! I'm not sure if it's a mental thing or if he just isn't a quick twitch athlete but for a guy who was previously touted as a high pick he gets dominated too often on quick breaking routes.

I think he could make a nice safety though. I love him as a blitzer
