Default 2015 NFL Draft: Marcus Mariota vs. Jameis Winston

With Marcus Mariota returning to school and Jameis Winston being draft eligible for the 2015 NFL draft, who do you think will be the top overall pick? I think that Mariota was going to be the #1 overall had he declared but he decided to return for another season. So I think next year will probably be like 2012 when Luck and RG3 went 1 and 2, so he will go #1 in 2015 and why?

Right now it has to be Winston, it is hard to find a hole in his game this season which was his first year of college ball. He made headlines off the field but he put up insane numbers and looks to have everything you look for in a prototypical NFL QB.

Winston for sure. He's the best QB in college football, and he hasn't even figured out how to throw it less than 15 yards yet.

I don't think Mariota is nearly as good as a prospect as RGIII was, yet. He could perform well next year, but I don't think he's quite as good a passer as RGIII is. I think Jameis Winston is going to be the clear cut number one overall prospect for next year, and this offseason and throughout the summer we're going to have to suffer non stop coverage of Jameis from ESPN and other media outlets, much like we did with Clowney.

I said it a few months ago, once the 2014 draft ends nobody is going to shut up about Jameis and the 2015 draft. He's going to get attention and hype the same way Clowney got this offseason.

Winston would be the favorite but Mariota could probably close the gap with a good year. The thing that Mariota has going for him is he's a super individual. You can tell by the way he carries himself that his parents did a fantastic job with him.

On the subject of next year, if guys like Blake Bortles and Brett Hundley stay in school you could have a class that rivals the great class of 83.

There is only thing Mariota does on the field better than Winston, and that's run in a straight line. Every other facet of playing QB goes to Winston decisively.

More fuel to the fire that Winston won't be in the 2015 Draft.

Anything is possible, but I would be very surprised if he is the projected #1 pick and still decides to return to school.

Peyton Manning did, Eli Manning did, Andrew Luck did as well. Granted none of them had previously won a MNC and/or Heisman.

That was under and entirely different set of rookie contract rules. Now it's all about the 2nd contract.

Matt Leinart is in that conversation as well. Again, not saying it isn't possible, but I'd be surprised.

If you were interested enough in this thread to click on it, raise your football knowledge and read the official reporting on Jameis Winston's rape charges and then make an informed decision on your support of his nfl career.

We always talk about the risk of injury, but who was the last "sure fire" First Round QB to have an injury significantly alter his status (fell below Round 3 for the purpose of my context of significant)?

FWIW, RG3 said he was returning to Baylor after he won the Heisman until the NFL told him he was going to be a top 10 pick.

If Winston has a nearly identical or better season than he had in 2013, there's going to be unbelievable pressure on him to leave school.

Rams fan here. Looks like we could be in position to draft one of these two guys. Thoughts on how they've looked so far this season? And who do you prefer?

If the Rams want an NFL QB the only answer is Jameis Winston. If the Rams want to run the spread, Winston is still the answer.

The only big board of Kiper's to pay attention to is his last one. He's just looking for headlines and internet clicks during what is a dead period for NFL Draft interest to a majority of fans. Unless Winston does something really stupid off the field, he's still the #1 guy.

Winston still has to be the top QB as of now, I like everything about his game more than Mariota other than speed(Winston obviously isn't a slouch athlete himself) and maturity but I'm a believer it will come with time ala Cam Newton.

Okay, so I'll ignore the obvious bias because this could actually be a decent debate. But explain to me what the difference is between an NFL QB and a spread QB!

I assume you imagine the spread offense to be some sort of gimmick? Well, how many teams now in the NFL do not run elements of this on a weekly basis?

The NFL is evolving into a greater beast than it ever has been. By being able to spread defenses out it gives a greater ability to spot mismatches, be it in the run game or the pass game. Peyton Manning plays in a spread offense, often times out of the pistol formation. 10 years ago people would be up in arms about a gimmicky offense which wouldn't work, but hey it set all kinds of records.

Winston is the more conventional, pocket-passing quarterback and has the arm to make all the throws. Mariota obviously moves better but I question how effective he'll be when forced to operate from within the pocket (see: RGIII).
