Default Rob Gronkowski should sit out the 2014 season.

3rd off-season that he's going under the knife. He's gone under 6 times now. Has been rushed back from the arm and re-broke it. The back has been hurt in two different places in college and the pro's also got a infection in the arm. He has to wait for the MCL to heal before getting the ACL fixed.

He should tell the team that he's not planing on playing next season and is going to take the whole year off so he can come back right for the 2015 season. He hasn't had a full off season in years. If he sits the year he'll only be 26 in 2015 when he comes back.

This guy has giving his all to the Pats it's time he lets his body take a break from the game.

If he's going to do that he might as well retire.

How does a broken arm relate to a fluke ACL+MCL tear? This is what not thinking is called.

Just because A happens and then B happens does not mean A caused B. Sitting out a year won't help him.

I don't disagree, but he's just injury prone. And it's not little things. He's had numerous major injuries just about every year going back to college. It's the reason he wasn't a Top 15 pick and fell to the 2nd round (and could have fallen to the 3rd if the Pats weren't so bold).

Obviously, he should keep trying to come back unless it's head injuries (all meat, can't get hurt there), but he and the team should approach 2014 as if he won't be back.

How's that? Takes 9 months to a full 12 for a ACL. which would take him to week 14 or 15 of next season. So he could come back for the playoffs next year or just wait it out. The guy has been hurt a lot.

Getting your body cut open now a 7th time would make me think long term. Again if he sits a whole year the guy will only be 26 starting 2015.

A hit like that is not "injury-prone".
A hit like that would have blown up ANYONE'S knee & leg.

Gronk should skip next season and fully recover, if possible.
I feel terrible for him.
Everyone knows how I feel about hits like that.
Unnecessary, because they do this.
Man-up, head up, tackle like a man.

The Patriots have no prayer of getting another ring this season without Gronk.
None.
Well, barring more injuries to other teams.....

I actually agree with this, too. He should heal up, do a bunch of specific-strength work to on protecting weak areas, and come back after a year in the best shape of his life instead of coming back sometime next year when, again, he's at less than full strength. Playing with injuries makes you over-rely on other parts of your body, making them more susceptible to injury in turn. At this point, he just needs to get himself really healthy. There are a number of players who have taken a year off for injuries and returned to be productive players.

I'm not sure Brady has so many good years of football left that the Pats/Gronk would want Gronk to miss a year.

I just don't think of ACLs taking a year to recover from anymore. If it does take him that long then, sure, sit out the rest of the season. These are football players though, if they can play they are going to play. Most of them have that mentality anyways.

Though there were rumors that Gronk's daddy held him out longer this year than what the Drs. were saying (is that right? I can't exactly remember now). So I guess it might not be that surprising after all?

I hope he heals up and comes back ASAP, though. I don't like the Patriots but I like to watch Gronk play football when I have to see them on TV...

... and I own him in 2 fantasy football DYNASTY leagues...

Our organization should have thought about that prior to stripping him of every decent weapon he had this off season and doing nothing to get him any. Its ok, Brady will just will us to another AFC championship ala 2006 before we lose to Manning.

He'll be back by September, probably October of next year.
He probably should be eased in unlike Adrian Peterson, but still, he's gong to be playing next year.

On a side note, how the hell has Tony Gonzalez been able to stay injury free all these years with all these DBs diving at his knees.

Great question but they didn't used to "tackle" like that as often.
It's been happening much more recently, partly due to the newer rules.

The guy is definitely a walking injury, though. He's basically hurt everything from the neck down.

Wonder if the durability argument will come into play with how good he is. Does this mean Heath Miller is a better tight end because he can stay healthy?

He will be back next year no matter what. Brady only has so many years left so the team will push for him to come back.

I almost forget how many games he has missed. The forearm and knee aren't typical injuries but he is getting broken far too often.

You guys keep saying he'll be back because of Brady. He's only 24 years old! he's going to be playing way past when Tom is done.

THIS SHOULD BE ABOUT A YOUNG MAN GETTING RIGHT. Not about Tom or the Pats. Oh and if you think he's scared about losing his contract. If the Pats cut him after next year to not pay the 10 million that's due a rested and fully healthy Gronk at 26 years old would have 90% of the teams in the NFL making him almost if not the highest paid TE in the game.

It's about that young man's shot at a Super Bowl, which he might not have much with Ryan Mallett or whoever the next New England QB will be.

Once he's fully healthy he plays. That's it. Unless a medical professional suggests additional rest time following the rehab to 100%, there's no reason he should sit out a season because he's had injuries. I don't think that's usually something doctors say will help. The rehab will include strengthening the surroundings muscles, conditioning, and getting over the mental hurdle. As far as I know, there's no reason to keep him out extra time once he's healed and rehabbed full strength. I don't get why anyone thinks EXTRA rest AFTER he's 100% would be advised or beneficial in any way. I've never heard that anywhere.

Gronk is such a dynamic talent, I really don't think it matters who's throwing the ball. This has been the case for most great TEs.

Are you telling me a great TE makes its team a contender, regardless of QB play?

Wasn't it an ACL and MCL?

That's a bigger deal than just a slight ACL like many return from quicker than in the past. We have to remember that AD's recovery was a huge exeption and it seems that some want it to become the rule.

As far as I know, there's no reason to keep him out extra time once he's healed and rehabbed full strength. I don't get why anyone thinks EXTRA rest AFTER he's 100% would be advised or beneficial in any way. I've never heard that anywhere.
The point of the thread was to suggest it could take all of next season to truly be back to 100%. Not a doctor clearing him to play, but actually 100%. Doctors cleared RGIII to play, and he wasn't 100%. 100% includes your mindset. RGIII hasn't looked as mobile this year as he did last year. It's not just that he's running less. I still don't see the athlete I saw last year. He's still a great athlete, to be sure, but barring another health setback you're going to see a more explosive player next year. That's what people are suggesting with Gronkowski, since he was hardly back before he was injured again. It's not about arbitrarily sitting him out a year, but of letting him heal truly without a timetable or an estimated return date. Of course he'll be back when he's really ready. Think part of it is how a lot fantasy owners and Pats fans have this attitude of wanting him back as soon as possible. 100% is not 100% able to play. 100% is healed, and that's what bigbuc and some others want to see, because they want to see him for as long as possible, not as soon as possible. Nobody's suggesting to put him on the bench in order to sound like a doctor; it's more an expression of wanting to make sure he's at full strength before he goes back out again.

Yes players play to try and win it all. And a super bowl is amazing thing to win. But before players play to win a ring thay play for money. Money that most likely will have to take care of them and some of their family members for years after they're done playing.

And If I was in Gronks camp I would tell him to take the full 12 months at the earliest to come back. So a full 12 months takes us to week 14 of next season which I still think he shouldn't rush after that.

We are talking about a player that hasn't had a training camp for 3 years because he's been in rehab. Also we don't ask much but what's going on in between this guys ears? His head? What's he thinking?

I think you just take the year to get right mentality and physically.

Just look at how he had to play this season with the big black thing on his arm because the bone hasn't had a fully time to heal. Back injuries to get full back from that takes a awhile. Look at Howard in the NBA last year he was cleared to play but wasn't half the player because it take a longer time to get strong again.

I say take the year off. Heal, train his butt off. Come back in 2015 at full health with his mind right. Still only 26 years old and ready to take over the league again. If that's with the Pats then great. If they want to cut him like I said before 25 teams would line up to make him a very rich man because you don't find TE's that have over 40 td's in 3 1/2 seasons.
