Default New World Order for College Football

According to the GBN:

New world order for big-time college football … For those that missed the news, the NCAA has approved a new governance structure for Division I that will give the five power conferences - the Big Ten, SEC, ACC, Pac-12 and Big XII - along with Notre Dame a new level of legislative autonomy. The new structure is still subject to a 60-day period in which other schools may submit objections, however, it is not expected enough schools will submit an override to put the legislation in jeopardy. Among other things, the new governing structure clears the way for colleges to provide greater benefits for their athletes including increased scholarships to cover the "full cost of attendance” as well as improved long-term health care. Guaranteed 4-year scholarships are also expected to be on the table. It is also expected that rules will be relaxed for draft prospects to contact agents and allow players greater opportunities to make money off-the-field. On the other hand, the NCAA will maintain control over the rules of the game and the NCAA basketball tournament will be unchanged. The next step will be for the five power conferences to form an agenda that can be voted on at the NCAA Convention next January. Meanwhile, other Division I conferences will have the opportunity to adopt the same legislation passed by the Power Five conferences. And presumably, the number of schools within the jurisdiction of the Power conferences could grow if any of the 5 undergo further expansion down the road. There is also the expectation that the Power 5 conferences will explore the possibility of forcing member teams to play only other power conference opponents on their non-conference schedules.

I'm kind of excited to see where this goes. It could be terrible but it can't stay the way it is.

Power five conferences can give their players more money, guaranteed scholarships, possibly play them, and only play each other. Where this is headed is the other six conferences will be at a huge recruiting disadvantage and will turn into a glorified FCS.

I can't wait for all the guys who will get "paid" and still be hungry, driving around in their luxury cars. For the sport it will be good. For the student athlete it's gonna suck. Why even bother tutoring and helping them pass classes.

There are only about 10-15 guys each year that have that national attention, Who will make money from outside.

I hate how players complain about getting exploited. They could make money if they wanted to. Go play in Canada or the AFL. You only have to be 18 to do so. If you want to make money, go that route. Otherwise go to college and shut up.

To be fair, it's pretty much ******** that some of these dudes have to even pretend to be students. Making college athletes actually go to class is just how they get around how much of a joke the whole process is. If they want to say that a college education is worth the revenue the players bring in, fine. But just make class optional, and if a player doesn't want to take advantage of an education, so be it. If they don't make it to the NFL and leave the school without a degree, it's the player's fault.

I'd prefer the current ND system of players having sex in exchange for classwork.

The ACC and SEC are sticking with 8 conference games, there is no way they would ever agree to this, and I highly doubt the Big 12 ever would either.

There's really only about 5-8 teams capable of winning a MNC right now, there won't be some global shift. Unless the non-Power 5 conferences run with June Jones idea to play in the Spring.

We always hear that claim but I don't buy it. In the 16 years of the BCS, 11 different teams won the title. Four other teams participated but did not win. Sure, none of those teams were from non-power conferences. But in the BCS era, non-BCS conferences were 5-2 in BCS bowls (not including when TCU played Boise State) so obviously they can compete when given the chance. But if you heap all these additional benefits onto the already more powerful teams and then say we aren't even going to play the other half of FBS, there isn't even a chance the other teams can compete.

They are saying that non conference games must be against other schools in the power 5 conferences, no more scheduling of ridiculous out of conference opponents for easy victories. Of course that means way more injuries, but if they are paying them, so be it.

And 2 of the conferences will be completely against the idea, and very, very likely a third. Really the only conference I see getting behind this idea in full is the Big 10, and no one cares what the weakest conference wants.
