Default Is BJ Raji a top free agent this year?

He is like the Kenny Britt of DLmen in that he is a proven talent but seems to have been pretty underutilized this past season. Or has he just fallen off? I don't watch a lot of Packers games but I loved Raji as a prospect.

Is he going to get a high dollar 5 year deal? Is he worth that? Why did he play so few snaps in 2013?

He played fewer snaps because for whatever reason he was not used in the nickel package which only employs two down linemen. There is some speculation as to whether that was to keep his snap count down or whether the coaches just viewed other players as better options. IMO I don't think he's ever really bought in to being a two-gapper. That's why Pickett got the snaps at NT even though that's where Raji would prefer to play (Raji played DE). Raji isn't content just eating up blocks for the LB corps. He wants to penetrate and get into the backfield. Unfortunately in Capers D the NT needs to eat up space and let the LBs do their thing. He wants to play more 3-tech and thus will end up signing with a 4-3 team. Whatever team signs him might actually get a good player because when he is on his game he is pretty damn good, but I don't think his future is in Green Bay.

Raji reportedly turned down $8 million/year offer from Green Bay. Like Timm said, Raji had a view of how he felt he should've been used in the Packers defense and the team had a completely different idea. I think he'll be above average for which ever 43 team signs him, but if he gets in excess of $8 million/year, then that's definitely overpaying.

I'd welcome him (not at $8 million per) as another GB cast-off in Minny.

System or not, he has sucked pretty hard the past few years.

To answer the initial question, someone will pay him because 27 year old DTs with his size don't hit the market everyday.

Change of scenery and scheme will help him, but I still feel he won't be worth the contract he gets, regardless of where he gets it

Line him up next to Wilfork.

An unhappy NT who thinks they're better served in another scheme isn't worth the 8 mil from GB. GB could draft a player and get the same production but a team with a different scheme may get a stud. Future shouldn't be in GB.

I think that in the past few years he's been used in ways that don't fully take advantage of his skillset, and that's because of personnel issues.

He's still obviously very talented, and I think that somebody is going to pay him big money.

as good as he is it seems like DLineman the last few years haven't been getting too much in terms of long big money deals. Seattle signings of Bennett and Avril last year were good examples of players everyone thought would get 4yr/25mill type deals and never did and signed 1 year for 5 million and probably won't get much better this year.

I haven't followed closely but assume him and Henry Melton will be the two top free agent DLineman this year and would be surprised if either of them got more than 4 years 20 million especially melton off the knee injury.

Raji being from Boston College university would be a really nasty signing with New England Patriots to team with Wilford as someone mentioned above with them playing more of a 4 down line the last two years. Him and Wilfork and Jones on the DL would be really solid I think that would be a better signing for the Pats than giving a corner (Talib or Denard) a bunch of money when their DTs performed so bad last year without Wilfork even tho they are young neither are long term players from the looks of it.
