Wait till the game is on the line and is decided upon by flag on someone for using the N word. That's gonna be awesome.

Imagine the media blow up if it's a white guy who says it versus a black guy who says it. Or let's see how they handle it for each case. How the media will treat it differently... I can't wait.

It will steal all the headlines. NFL's goals accomplished!

I think they'd much rather be in the news for penalizing the use of the N word than appear as though they tolerate racism.

But again, I don't think this is going to be a big deal or even noticeable if it passes. It's like when the NBA changed their dress code. Everybody freaked out and claimed it was racist at first and it then it wasn't thought of again because the players just followed it after initially complaining.

My point would make sense, if it was still 1978. I live in (non Chicago) Illinois, and that's what it still says on our calenders.

This. Thinking the players cant adjust to this, or that they will be trying to frame each other is in my mind extremely weak arguments against the rule. The NFL has a lot to benefit and it will have minimal impact on players.

I'm not arguing against it. I'm just saying its going to be difficult because of how common the word is. You can use the regular workplace example but it doesn't really apply when a large % of NFL players have always used the word in and out if the NFL workplace. I'm really interested to see how it plays out.

And Richard Sherman is 100% correct.
Black people insult each other because of skin color all the time, but they don't use the "N" word. They call each other "Grimace", "Big-Bird", or "Cookie".

Maybe not as an insult but in an aggressive fashion.

According to sources, Williams was accused of using the N-word toward Ellison in last week's game. The Fritz Pollard Alliance, an influential group that promotes diversity and job equality in the NFL, came to the defense of Ellison after he'd been questioned and criticized for allegedly using racially tinged profanity toward Williams.

But the Alliance said Williams told Ellison "f--- you" and called him the N-word after Ellison warned him about using such profanities during the course of the game.

The aggressive part of that is the '**** you'. And of course you can't say it to referees, that isn't the issue here.

"**** you" is not aggressive; it's profane. "I'm gonna **** you up" is aggressive.

So saying "**** you (expletive)" is to be translated into "**** you good buddy" and that is the issue here. The NFL is going to more strictly enforce the rule I posted earlier. One that is already in the books. But lets just say that the N bomb will be a quick trigger.

Doug Baldwin says the N word in the NFL is a term of endearment. It just keeps getting better.

I haven't heard one legitimate argument for why it should be allowed. The closest anybody can come is that it's ok for some people (but not everyone) to say it to some people (but not everyone) in some contexts.

The fact that it's referred to as "the N word" should be a pretty good indication that it isn't appropriate and nothing positive will be lost by eliminating it from the NFL.

My observation is that the word is just flagrantly used, in general.

How can it be only considered a term of endearment if it's also used towards other races when upset?

I regularly get called it whenever one of the black youth I counsel is pissed off at me.

In my personal opinion, if a word is used more frequently when a person is upset or angry then the word has a profane context, regardless of its history.

you are right, and so is badgerbacker.

Surprise: I have yet to chime in on this racist topic!

But I did just read thru these comments and got a lot of laughs at a few people here.

To defend the N-word in any manner is simply preposterous, ignorant, asinine, idiotic.

But it doesn't surprise me some people still do just that, defend it or advocate, justify it's use still.

But I guess that goes along with racist, 100%-discriminatory "programs" like:

Switzer: 'I'd never recruit a white quarterback'

We have a LONG way to go in this country to level the playing fields in this country. There is nothing that is not available to a black person in this country that is not also available to a white person.
Obama is the ultimate proof of this.

If something is wrong for one or more groups of people, it must be wrong for all groups of people.
If it's okay for one group, it should be okay for others.

This is 2014.
It's time to stop the preferential treatment, stop treating one specific race of our society like they are handicapped and giving them special little gifts or rules or privileges that nobody else gets. IT IS NOT WORKING and it is making racial harmony worse in this country, by a mile. See "Knockout game".

The N-word is clearly a bad word, not a term of endearment.
What a joke that excuse is, and even funnier that some buy that BS.
Nothing surprises me anymore though from some people.

It is used in the black community as a term of endearment. There is a large percent of black people in the NFL so for them it will be more difficult than it will be for others. It is the way it is. Black people have claimed that word it is used in their homes as kids and throughout their entire life. Where I live the word is used frequently. It can be used in anger but the only way it is used in a racist way or in a bad way is when you are being racist. If I say "F-U *****" I am saying **** you dude/bro/son/person. Once again not saying it should be that way just saying that is the way it is especially in places of poverty(a lot of black neighborhoods). It's just going to be a lot harder to break that habit for a black male than a white male because white people grow up saying it in privacy and never saying it around other people and black people say it freely as if it is part of their culture.

This is a really, really racist rule. Richard Sherman really put it best.

It's also really gray in how they know who said it.

The thought of (mostly) old white men penalizing black men for saying ****** is funny to me.

The NFL can't penalize a white player for saying it if they don't or can't penalize a black player from saying it. It is that simple. In the workplace you are not able to treat an employee differently due to race religion or sexual preference. So if you believe that Riley Cooper should have been punished for saying the N-word then you must penalize all players for using it. Otherwise big fat lawsuit.

Finally someone here with some common sense!

Remember though, in today's America, the black community is USED to getting special, preferential treatment as evidenced by just a small sampling I posted above.

Hate me all you want haterz, but that's the truth, obviously.

It's a racist rule because the only people saying it are black people. If a white player said it, they'd get an unsportsmanlike anyway.

So it's racist to specify that the rule applies equally to all races?
