Yeah redskins in pretty bad but Snyder will fight it forever because he doesn't want to have to rebrand his team.

That last point actually does play. I can't even remember the last time I ran into a native American person, but that might just be where I live. Their small population size really hurts. Not that many people actually care enough to do something about it.

Since Tom Landry began using the Wonderlic as a scouting tool in 1970...

There are 10 Super Bowl starting QBs who scored from 0-20.

There are 5 Super Bowl starting QBs who scored 30-50.

It bothers men that people are trying ascribe equivalency between the term 'savages', a hateful slur always used in a derogatory way towards Native Americans, and the word 'redskin', which has very few references in any historical record form the 19th and 20th century, and is for the most part a term from the old cowboy western movies.

One day the Redskins will be called The Tribe, like William & Mary, but the logo will stay the same.

That's the point. Outside of the name of a sports franchise, the word hasn't been in use even as a slur, since like forever.

Who calls Native Americans 'redskins', other than John Wayne??

If you read historical literature from the westward expansion period in American History, Native Americans were either referred to mostly by their tribal affiliation or called savages.

Redskin is a word that was mostly popularized in Hollywood westerns, not in real word usage.

There are Native American high schools that have 'redskins' as their nickname.

It's not an ideal nickname for a sports team, but it's not that far removed from the Cleveland Indians or Atlanta Braves.

(Clearly I'm biased but I think my facts are correct. )

There's plenty in the historical record.

From the LA Herald in 1897. "VALUE OF AN INDIAN SCALP: Minnesota Paid Its Pioneers a Bounty for Every Redskin Killed"

Or a short story that ran in the Illinois Free Trader in 1841: "'Old Cross-Fire,' repeated Wetzel, with rather a sneering emphasis, 'he's at the top and bottom of this business; and the very minute he finds himself hunted down by horsemen, he will scalp poor Rose, and then take good care to [get] himself and his cursed red-skin gang [out of] harm's way."

There was a study that found the first common usage in the 1760s in French Illinois as "Peau-rouge." It was in widespread use in English as "Redskin" by the 1820s. There are many references to Presidents using it in meetings and speeches through the 1800s.

The reason you don't hear it anymore is because the Indians are gone. They're either dead or living on what basically used to be concentration camps. Out of sight, out of mind. I think the same would be true of any slurs against black folks if the white politicians following the civil war had succeeded in their plan to co-opt the Liberia colony and send all of the freed slaves back to Africa.

Anyway, rather than "Tribe," I think they ought to go back to their previous name: "Braves." Brings it right back to the team's history and we already know Indians are cool with it. You're right about the logo. It probably will stay the same. A lot of Indians seem to like it because it's the opposite of Chief Wahoo.

Indians should change as well. Natives are not from India. (Cleveland sports fan here.) Been hoping they change the name to the teams nickname, Tribe. Don't see the problem with Braves, Chiefs, etc. Some have even given permission to use their name, such as the Seminoles.

Mono posted it, but one of the major reasons the term Redskin came along is because of the sale of Native's skin for bounty.

(deleted tirade on the nature of using skin color to identify people. not a discussion for this forum.)

I think Washington should either go back to Braves, or look at something like the Hogs, because of their fan section.

Some guys have started multiple Super Bowls. I still don't know if that adds up to 44, I am not going to do the research. I'm sure some guys didn't take the test too.

The reason it doesn't add up to 44 is because it excludes by far the most common interval of 20-30

I am going to blame missing that on it being early. That sounds like a good excuse.
