Default Team review, post draft.

FA is over, and now so is the draft. Yes, things can change a little bit after June 1, when high priced vets get cut. I am not going to to do all 53 players on the roster. The fact is, it is the top 37 that make or break your season. If you are down to your 4th T, you are not having a good year.
HC: Tomlin. A complete unknown. Could be very good or very bad. Way to early to know anything.
OC: Ariens. Was our WR coach last year. Has OC experience. But that was with Cleveland, and it was not a success.
DC: LeBaeu. The master of the 3-4 D. The D is his baby. It will succed or fail because of him.
1. QB. Ben is one of the top young QB's in the game. When he has time and is healthy. The fact is, he has gotten beat up in each of his first 3 years. He became the starter, because Maddox got hurt. We MUST, repeat, MUST keep Ben healthy.
2. Backup QB. Batch. After watching him with the Lions, I had my doubts. But he ahs done a nice job as a backup. He is not a guy that can lead a team for 16 weeks. But to play for a half or agame once in a while he does a nice job.
3. Starting RB. Parker. One of Cowhers great finds. One of the top 10 RB's in the NFL. Threat everytime he touches the ball. His only short coming is lack of power between the T's, in short yarage.
4. Backup RB. Davenport. Great size, but doesn't use it well. Plays like a 245 pound version of Parker. Has been hurt almost every year in the NFL. Should have been replaced. *
5. FB. Krieder. One of the best blockers in the NFL. Offers nothing as a recieving or running threat. Stictly a blocker. High priced at that. *
6. Starting TE. Miller is a top 10 TE. Good blocker and a very good reciever. Needs the ball more.
7. Second TE. Tuman/Spaeth. Tuman is a good all around TE at the end of his career. 1 or 2 more years and he will be gone. Spaeth is a huge blocking TE with pretty good hands. A T in the 80's. Will make the catch, but will have a hard time beating coverage.
8 & 9. Starting WR's. Ward and Holmes. Ward is one of the best in Steelers history. Makes all the catches, blocks better than anyone, and tougher than S&%@! The only nock on Ward is he is getting old, and the injuries are starting to add up. He hasn't played a full season in a couple of years. Holmes is the opposite of Ward. Great speed, average hands, and still learning. Could be great or could be nothing more than a number 2. Jury is still out.
10. Backup WR. Wilson. Nothing more than an average WR. A little small, average speed and hands. Over paid for what he produces. *
11. LT. Smith is a good LT. Not the best, but a good solid LT. We win about 65% of the games that he plays in. We loose most of the games he doesn't play in. He is the second highest paid player on the team, with 2 yesra left on his contract. there is no replacement on the roster if he leaves.goes down to injury.
12. LG. Faneca. One of the top 2 LG's in the game. Never been hurt, plays every game/down. Can play any position on the line. Does it all. has at least 5 good years left, but only 1 left on his contract. He is pissed. Will the team be able to resign him? Don't know. There is no viable replacement on the team. But then again, what team would have as good a backup as Faneca.
13. C. Mahan? I am really not sure who is the starter. I don't think the team really knows either. It could be Mahan, Okabi, Philip, or Simmons. Major question mark here. *
14. RG. Simmons? I am not a fan of Simmons. He gets beat up by large DT's. Kemo has looked better. Another major question mark. Simmons is in his FA year. *
15. RT. Starks. Looked good 2 years ago, but looked really slow last year. It is the last year of his contract, so maybe that will motivate him. *
16. Backup OL. Colon. At 6-3/330 he has prototype size for G. He is a little short for T. Looked good at T for Starks last year. I don't think anyone will be surprised if he is starting by the end of the year, somewhere.
17. Backup OL. Kemo. Another huge young OLman. 6-3/330. he slipped in the draft because people had questions about his temper. Moves well, strong as an ox, and tough. Should also be starting by the end of the year.
18. K. Reed. Has been a very good K. Knows the tricks of kicking at HF.
19. P. Sepulveda. Rookie 4th round pick. Has a booming leg. May be the answer for the next 10-12 years. A major upgrade over Gardocki.
20. LDE. Smith. Just resigned this off season. The perfect 3-4 DE. Good size, handles double teams well, stuffs the run, and gets pressure on the QB.
21. NT. Hampton. Will never win a bodybuilding contest, but more than fills the roll. The best pure NT in the game. Can't be moved from the line, and persues well. Needs to be signed long term.
22. RDE. Keisel. Good size and speed. Very good pass rusher, but tends to get pushed around against the run. There was talk about moving him to OLB.
23. Backup NT. Hoke. Smaller than Hampton. Plays a quickness game. Good backup, but not a viable replacement if anything happens to Hampton.
24. Backup DE. There are several players on the team, but none are really anything to get excited about. All have short comings and questions. *
25. LOLB. Haggans. Good player. Does everything well. Has questions about health. Gets hurt almost every year. Last year of his contract as well.
26. LILB. Farrior. Has been a great player for a long time. Starting to slow down. Most likely good for 1 or 2 more years. But a replacement has to be found.
27. RILB. Foote. Was our best LB last year. Is in the prime of his career. Not a star, but a good solid player, that every team needs. Our best coverage LB. Is a little undersized, and needs to be protected by Hampton. if the G gets free, Foote is done.
28. ROLB. Harrison. Did not win this job. It is handed to him. While Harrison is a good player, and a good team guy, he is limited. On the small side, average speed, and a liabilty in coverage. Great hitter. Not a long term answer.
29. Backup LB. Timmons. 1st round pick. Great speed. very aggresive. On the small side. Can he hold up at the point of attack? Can he cover? He is a good blitzer, and great hitter. He might be better inside. If he can add about 15 pounds.
30. Backup LB. Woodley. 2nd round pick. Plays hard. Doesn't take plays off. He is a little short, 6-1-the prototype is 6-3. Offers no help in coverage. In the 2 biggest games of his senior year, he disappered. Great college player. Will be a solid NFL player, but not a good enough athlete to be a star.
31. SS. Troy. Great speed. Attacks the ball. One of the best players in the NFL. Might be better as a FS. Has 4.3 40 speed. Health is the only real question. Has had 6 concussions. Most player are out of the league at 8. A move to FS might prolong his career. Think Ed Reed. 10-12 INT's a year as a FS. Would provide great down the feild help.
32. FS. Smith. The boy can hit. But can he cover. Not real big, nor real fast. Still very much a question mark position. *
33. Backup S. At the moument it is Clark. He is over paid to be a backup. A very average player. Doesn't make many mistakes, but doesn't make many plays either. *
34. Starting CB. Taylor. Great 2 years ago. Shut down Johnson, Harrison, Mohammed, and others. Stunk last year. Has great size and speed. Which player is he? *
35. Starting CB. Townsend. Old, slow, and small. Was beaten often last year, and is another year older and slower. Needs to be replaced. *
36. Backup CB. McFadden. Good size and speed. We all hope he wins the job from townsend. Much better athlete than Townsend. Will he continue to develop? *
37. Colgouglh. Another of our young CB's. Great speed and average size. Is he fully recovered from his neck injury? He should be a good nickle back. *

Out of those 37 positions, I see 13 questions marks. Thats a full third of the players/positions. That does not include the coaching staff. Turmoil is what makes me nervous. We can all hope, but this is very unsettling for a team that won the SB 14 months ago. It could get a lot worse. Ben, Troy, Faneca, M. Smith, Starks, Hampton, Simmons, Harrison, Smith, Haggans, and Farrior are all starters whose contacts expire over the next 2 seasons. This could get a lot worse before it gets better. 7 of those players have no viable replacements on the team.

Just a little tid-bit but Ray Horton seems to love DeShea Townsend so he's going to be very hard to have replaced. He might not be our most athletic corner, but according to Ray he's the smartest guy on our defense and really helps out with alignments, calls, etc.

IMO Anthony Smith can do it all, he's a ball hawk and a hitter with good speed.

I think the fact Horton loves DeShea Townsend is why we drafted William ***.. *** is DeShea, but with more speed and upside.

Terrific in zone, great blitzer, leader, and tough in the run game.

Yes Townsend is smart. Yes Townsend is a great guy. But the fact is he can't cover anyone. He is to slow. He has been burnt often the past 2 years. He was never great to begin with. At his best, Townsend was an average CB. But his past is in the past. If he is still the starter when the season opens, we are in for a long season.

Smith runs a 4.6 40 by the way. You can't hit what you can't catch. But even more important, he plays center feild. Can he cover? That is the real question.

Really like your analysis, Richdg, as always. One absolute mistake though is the notion that Willie Parker lacks power. I read this everywhere, as though he is a finesse quick back. When he gets low and hits the pile he is all power. Last year there were too many times that the Steelers were running up the middle while the defense had 9 guys in the box and Willie didn't even have a crease to work with so he had no chance to drive. I think willie is, pound for pound, as powerful as any runner in the nfl.

Parker is strong. There is no doubt. But a strong 240 lb. Rb has a better chance than a strong 209 lb. Rb at picking up those important short yardage gains. What was Bettis in his career? 75% of the time on short yardage runs. That is what we need. To compliment Parker. Plus is gives him a breather now and then.

also, i wouldnt call our backup WR's a question, nor our full back situation

nate washington / ceddy wilson are good backups and you can even say heath miller is a backup wr as he will be playing a lot of slot this year

dallask baker could be a potential backup as well, as well as willie reid

and krieder is one of the best at what he does, i dont see how thats a question mark

Krieder makes a lot of money. But the ONLY thing he can do is block. That means we are playin 10 against 11. As for WR's, guys that make 10 catches a year are not players. Let's compare our WR core to say Indy's. Indy had Harrison, Wayne, and Stokley. We have Ward, Holmes, and........... Which is better? How did we address this issue? A 7th round pick! Come on. Take off the Rose colored glasses.

you are going to compare our offense to indys?

its cliche but, cmon man thats apples and oranges

and last year it was mainly dallas clark/ben utecht, not stokley, and in which case we have a decent comparison in heath miller

stokley had 8 catches last year

I understand that. But Ben did have over 1000 more yards passing last year. Yet, our WR core did a worse job than the year before.

That's what a FB does, and he's one of the best at doing it. I think we can consider Heath as our primary 3rd option this year, with that I think we're very comparable to Indy in terms of overall depth. Now of course Harrison and Wayne are all-pros, but below that we do compare.

Did you see Smith vs the Bengals? The guy has speed man and he can cover, his only problem last year was that he was out of position at times, which is why rookies typically don't start on our defense, it takes anyone awhile to learn it.

Tomlin already said that we're very well set at both S positions.

Don't forget that we signed Gijon Robinson.. 6'1 261lbs and runs a 4.7. Played TE. He's very good running the ball and very good at receiving. That said he's a bi*ch to tackle..

He's perfect. I think Gijon will be the "Leonard" of our team.

I can almost Guarantee that if Tuman isn't gone this year, he's gone next.. they got the 2 TE's they wanted. They drafted Spaeth who can take #2 immediately... and Boyd who is a developmental prospect who can be a Solid #3 option.

6'8 258lbs runs a 4.82. He's a short to immediate receiving threat.. but he'll be able to add close to 25-30 lbs and keep relative speed. Hell he might even be a tackle project.

our offense can't be compared to indy's. all indy has is their offense. that being said, I think we have a pretty dern good offense. I'd argue that Holmes had as good a year as a rookie than antwaan did throughout with the steelers. nate needs to work on catching a little more but he was one of the best number fours in the league in my opinion. dallas baker is going to be good. I got to see him every week here in gainesville and he isn't called the touchdown maker for nothing. I know he is kind of a puss puss going across the middle but he is a leaper. He has made some incredible catches for UF and I expect he'll do the same if/when he eventually gets on the field. and then on top of that we have two mammoths with soft hands at TE, and a pro bowl running back. Our offense was top ten last season and I think it has drastically improved from a talent standpoint. and looking on the bright side, I dont think its possible for our line to play any worse than it did last year. I think with the improvements we've made on special teams we can be a playoff team again. I don't know though, I guess optimism isn't cool anymore.

The one that is true is taht the line is a mess, protect the man for god sakes Ben got in becasue Maddox got injured cause the line couldnt protect him

Now Ben is getting harsed the same way, we are amazing at run blocking but work on the pass you can aruge we have a SuperBowl line, who cares things happen, if we had a probowl line taht would be good not superbowl line- still good but not as good as a probowl line

Protect the man for god sakes

We are not that good at run blocking anymore, either. The fact is, 3 of the 4 secondary positions are questions. We don't know how they will perform. Most of the WR's are the same. Yes there is talent. But talent has to turn into production. Most of these palyers have not been able to do it. Maybe they will, maybe they will not. That is why they are question marks.

richdg, i showed you the stats that are almost exactly the same as our superbowl season for our top 3 receivers

we spread the ball around more this year, but our top 3 were about the same

you make no sense

Not true. Our stats went up a lot last year. In 05 Ben passed for just under 2400 yards, in 06 he passed for over 3500 yards. In 05 washington had 1 catch, and in 06 he had 35. Wilson had 26 in 05 and 37 in 06. Now the problem is very few TD's. We do better when we run the ball. Always have. The point I am trying to make is lack of bang for our buck. A lot of catches, very few scores or big plays. When we look at other groups of WR's around the NFL, they put the ball in the endzone. We have a bunch of possesion WR's. That is all they are. Maybe Holmes can become a threat, but he is the only one. This is another example of band aids to issues. Instead of going out and getting a big time player, we get junk. Balt. goes out and gets McGahee, we get Russell. NE goes out and gets Moss, we get Baker. This is why it took us 26 years to win another SB. You want to be a big time succesfull team, get big time successfull players. Stop letting the ones we have leave!

I wouldn't take McGahee or Moss. Neither are solid team players. In fact, I was more afraid of Jamal Anderson than I am about Willie McGahee. With their Oline in shambles right now, I don't see Willis doing much. NE i'm more worried about.. not because of Moss. but because of Maroney, Brady and the youth they've added to that secondary. You can sign all the players you want.

We won a superbowl.. who did we sign? Jeff Hartings, Rodney Bailey and Ced Wilson.

Do you remember when NE won the first 2-3 times? They didn't have any HUGE HUGE names sign... they drafted damn good and added solid players.. Vrabel and so on. The only big name they ever signed was Harrison. Until this year.

If buying great players guaranteed the superbowl... Dan Snyder would be on his 7th Superbowl.

To answer a few things. We have 2 deep threats at this point. Reid (Once he gets on the field) and Holmes. A lot of good teams don't have that.

What they do have is an efficient run game.. and frankly last year, we didn't have it.. Why? Because we did just the opposite of what Tomlin preaches.

We tried to put our players in a scheme, instead of scheming around our players. And if we cut down on the turnovers? We'll be fine. The reason a lot of them weren't in the end zone is because 1) Ben usually threw an INT before we got close and 2, Rico Fumbled it before we had a legitimate chance.

And because we were playing from behind all game (For the most part) we relied too heavily on passing and Ben put way too much pressure on himself.

Lets see how Arians scheme works... it should help Willie, the rookies and Ben.

seriously. we lost so many games last year because of turnovers and horrible special teams, not because we didn't have big name players.
