Front-loading contracts during the uncapped 2010 season has reportedly cost the Cowboys.
As a penalty, the Cowboys will lose $10 million in cap space over the next two seasons, according to a Monday report by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The division rival Redskins were also guilty of the same move, costing Washington $36 million against the cap in 2012 and 2013.
"All that money goes to 28 other teams -- $1.6 million each -- except for Saints and Raiders, who don't get any but don't lose any," Schefter tweeted.
Schefter wrote: "According to the sources, the deductions are not termed as violations, but are part of a recent agreement the NFL and the Players Association made to raise the salary cap number while preserving benefit increases and the performance pool."
WTF!!! Somebody should be fired...Yeah I know, itll never happen

can someone please clarify what we done wrong to get $10 million deducted from our cap? And please don't say its because we spent "too much" during an "uncapped" year.

Tweet from Dallascowboys.com beat write Josh Ellis:

The good news (I guess?) is that the Cowboys have apparently known this was coming for a while. You would hope they planned accordingly.
|
We can only hope that they planned it all out where they can still be aggressive.

If you think about it, it really isn't that big of a deal. If we split the penalty over 2 years it's 5 million a year. So we basically can do whatever we wanted to do except re-sign Laurent Robinson.
Take Ryan Broyles in the 4th and it's no big deal.

The $10mi penalty isn't goog, but at least we new about it and were planning around it. The Skins got hammered by it, so hopefully that will stop their spending spree.

Posted this to quell all the talk about the 'Boys not being able to buy anyone in the FA thread.
T-New saves more money by being released later. 'Boys can make a ton of moves and get cap space and they knew this was coming.
In short:
Cut T-New: 4mil for now or 6 mil for later
Restructure Dez (done), Ware, Scandrick, and Free: 13 mil in savings
Cut Coleman: 1.9mil
Cut Buehler....Buehler...Buehler...:1.26 mil
That's not including any number of moves they could make. That's an easy 21+mil along with the rumored ~4mil they had. With the massive inflation of TV revenue the cap number is going to soar next year.
tl;dr: The Cowboys were ready for this and are still in position to spend a great deal this offseason even with a ton of dead money. Next season when the cap will skyrocket and all dead money will be off the books the penalty can apply in full with little hassle.

I laughed so hard at this! I really hope it was supposed to be funny.
I really don't understand why anyone should be punished for spending in an uncapped year. It is not our fault that they had a year to go nuts.
It may not be much money, but I just don't like the principle of the matter. Seems completely stupid to me. I guess I don't understand.
Also-the sky is not falling if we don't sign Carr. It would be nice to get him, but it can work without him.
And I will not root for Finnigan. I hate that guy. Probably my least favorite player in the league.

The more I think about that penalty the more mad I am. That is a really crappy time to release the news.
I bet the Foreskins are really pissed...
Oh yea. No David Carr. I would rather draft a QB late than bring him in. No faith in that guy.

Heya all your local eagles fan here just to bring you some good news. The hit although bad on you with the massive inflation of the salary cap next year your team will easily be able to afford it. With the new tv contract the cap number should easily jump to 135-145 million vs the 120.6 it is this year.
So even if you take the full hit next year and do business as normal this year your cap number for next year should at worst be 125 million up 5 mil from this year. And i am no expert on your contracts but you don't have any huge rookie contracts coming up soon do you?

Wow. He is right. I completely forgot that the cap jumps next year. It really isn;t a big deal at all. We really can still do whatever we want.
The only drawback may be not being able to re-sign Laurent Robinson, but that might be a blessing in disguise anyway. A #3 WR isn't worth the money it would take to bring him back, even if he took a discount.

A statement from the Cowboys:
Quote:
Cowboys spokesman Rich Dalrymple issued a statement late Monday afternoon:
"The Dallas Cowboys were in compliance with all league salary cap rules during the uncapped year," said Dalrymple. "We look forward to the start of the free agency period where our commitment to improving our team remains unchanged."

League sources tell NFL Network's Jason La Canfora that the Raiders will formally announce the release of OLB Kam Wimbley on Tuesday.
Kevin Boss' release actually hasn't been formally announced yet. Per La Canfora, Boss and Wimbley's releases will be announced together. Wimbley will hit the market as a 28-year-old pass rusher with 16 sacks over the past two seasons and versatility to fit both a 3-4 defense as a linebacker and a 4-3 scheme as a defensive end. Wimbley would be an awfully nice fallback plan for teams that miss out on top free agent pass rusher Mario Williams
|
It would be interesting to see if he gets a look... Spencer hasn't signed his franchise tender so it could be rescinded if they like Wimbley better.
