Tim MacMahon ‏@espn_macmahon
Dez Bryant makes awesome look easy. Just soared over Brandon Carr and a safety to snag a TD pass on a post.

Dez has always shined in practice. I'm not being Debby Downer, but I'm ready to see him in action on the field playing consistently well.

I remember all the posters who fell in love with Sam b/c Terrell Owens became like his best butt buddy while in Dallas.

Nice possession receiver but nothing more ... more of a drug dealer but that is not a football thing.

That article sounds misleading... as if to say top 2nd year WRs who have a 1000 yard season, will likely have a down 3rd year before they have a bounce back 4th year+. Too cookie cutter.
We agree that if healthy Dez should absolutely go off this year. Looking forward to it.

Some good news :) Most of the walking wounded are making their way back in some form.

Beasley has seemingly earned the first crack at the WR3 role on the team.

Quote:
Wanna know how the team ranks the candidates for third receiver? Watch the return game on Monday. Reports are that Cole Beasley ran with the first team in the walk-through (he also started in the slot in the scripted 11-on-11 work) and will serve as the primary punt returner on Monday Night. It's clear the coaching staff is trying to find a roster spot for him. That said, they can't carry a third receiver who doesn't play a key role on special teams.
Still super concerned at Center but Big Mac is showing himself well now that he's practicing :)

Quote:
In the run period, recent returnee Mackenzie Bernardeau acquitted himself quite well. In drills, he clearly delivered a pop, driving back his fellow O-linemen. In the scrimmage, he continued this, and did a nice job reacting nicely to stunts and line games, which is a concern with a player who has missed so much practice time. The early returns on Big Mac are positive, and he's an evident upgrade over Leary, with whom he shared snaps today.
Some other quick hits from yesterday's practice:

* James Hanna caught a pretty touchdown as Kyle Orton arced a pass over a trailing defender.

* Andre Holmes, who had trouble high-pointing the ball earlier in the practice, did a nice job using his height to sky over a defender to come up with a pass in the corner of the end zone. It was a fitting end to the day for Holmes, who, after a shaky start, made several terrific plays, laying out to bring in an Orton pass, getting his feet in to bring in another pass, and running crisper routes.

I love pretty much every part of the final quote.

Quote:
Cole Beasley distinguished himself: in the first series, he made a nice grab to set up a Dan Bailey field goal; on the next, he drew a pass interference on Orlando Scandrick to set up another three-pointer by the Cowboys' Mr. Automatic (he was again spotless on the day, going 3 for 3). On a third, Felix Jones scooted behind a nice David Arkin trap block to notch a big gainer, which was met with a long string of Rob Ryan invectives. But the offense didn't dominate; Both Tyrone Crawford and Sean Lissemore made nice moves to earn would-be sacks of Romo.
Finding a quick, shifty, slot WR that has sticky hands has LONG been IMHO the missing piece to Garrett's offense and Beasley has really taken hold of that tag thus far. If he can't show up as a punt/kickoff returner though he'll have to be amazing to actually make the team since he won't be gunning or blocking on ST.

Arkin anchoring and blocking well for multiple days in a row? Yes please. His strength last year was his major issue and he has clearly benefited from the full offseason. I would not be upset at all if Big Mac moves to Center and Arkin starts at guard.

Bonus points that Felix is back to his shifty cat-like self. Him being explosive pays this team dividends as long as they keep his touches down.

Passing rushing hat-tips to our 5-techs is both exciting and absolutely necessary for our defense. Crawford was an absolute steal and our defensive end rotation is scary good.

Hatcher, Lissemore, Crawford, Geathers, Coleman, Spears, Bass

Out of that group I think the first 4 are solid locks, Coleman is *probably* in, Spears is cut, and Bass is stashed on the practice squad. I honestly think Bass has a ton of talent and will get sniped but unless he shows up huge in preseason he's battling long odds to get past Coleman/Geathers.

These Plax rumors are really soaring now. I personally would take the wait and see approach with him. Let's see if any of these your WR's show some potential on the field in some games.

Not really. Rosenhaus is drumming up the media like he always does and Dallas is a great target due to national exposure. We have zero interest in a red-zone threat considering we have a player just as capable if all we need is a jump ball demon (Andre Holmes).

Jerry Jones (LOL bad source I know) said they have zero interest and the talks of "preliminary" talks are hogwash.

However...

Quote:
Stephen Jones: "We haven't had any talks with Plaxico, we don't have any plans to"
The fact that 'Boys brass immediately squashed the rumors and distanced themselves from all talk of Plax leads me to believe this is just Rosenhaus playing the media (shock :o).

Even if the Cowboys do have interest in signing Plax or another veteran receiver, there's no rush. The best prospects will be available after the last round of cuts (like Robinson last year). Same probably goes for centers. Also, if they wait to sign a veteran until after the first they don't have to guarantee his salary for the whole year if they decide to release him. (At least that's the way it used to work; it may have changed with the new CBA.)

If you want to read into two training camp practices, Bernadeau looks like a beast and should only get better once he gets into football shape. Take that for what it's worth.

The Giants really didn't impress me last night. Remember when we were thinking about taking Amukamara at #9? Thank goodness we didn't. If Claiborne and Jenkins can get healthy and we keep Romo upright, I like our chances Sept. 5th.

In the illustrious words of Bart Scott, "Can't Wait!"

Costa's injury is believed to just be lower back soreness. Hopefully it's just a 2-3 day thing. He could still play against Oakland.

By the way, who would have thought that 4 weeks ago we would have cared so much that Costa is hurt..? But hey, to his credit he actually is playing well. He's a smart guy with slightly above average size. We could do worse.

A little bit of mixed reviews so far, but yes... I can't wait for him to show more. I'm hopeful.

Was Bennett impressive for you guys during the preseason?

I'm watching the Giants PS game over again, and he had a hell of a game. Great run blocking, and he was always open in the passing game. I was very impressed.

I know he didn't play well for you guys, so I'm curious if he's an offseason warrior who just doesn't show up in the regular season or if this is a sign of improvement on his part.

He was a great blocker for us, playing behind Witten didnt leave a lot of receiving oppurtunities for him. We always thought he would be a great red zone option for us but it never panned out. If hes your #1 TE I think he'll be very productive for you guys.

costa sucks, he's undersized and cant handle big dt. smart? ( vs washington on monday night) however he is mobile than gurode was the past few years and he can get on the second level but whenever you put nt a big nt over him he has been a liability, specifically in short yardage situations.

its not necessarily that he's hurts its more about the other guys who could've taken his job are all hurt too. your down to starting your 4th and 5th option at center going into a game, its not reg season, but its still football and you never want your qb to get hit during the preseason. with the kowalski and nagy not available to play until the season opener, i would bring gurode, faine, and jackson for a workout, pick the best and let him and costa battle it out. if costa wins out fine, but i want to see him get pushed at the very least

He is an EXCEPTIONAL inlane blocker. If you basically need a super athletic OT to block on the edge he's easily the best in the business. His route running, hands, and work ethic when it comes to the passing game is downright atrocious. If he managed to find some motivation and really works on his craft I guarantee you he could become an impact TE. All the tools but he has never looked like he put in the work.

I didn't really pay attention for Bennett did he slim down after showing up at 291?

Bennett had some good training camps where he looked like a HOFer.... then did nothing with the season. I wouldn't put much faith in him, but if anyone can light a fire under him it would be Eli and Coughlin. I wouldn't expect him to be in Pro-Bowl consideration, but i'd expect a lot more production than he had here.

In more bad news, Dez did something to his hamstring today. Doesn't sound too bad, but we know how this stuff goes. I doubt he practices for at least 10 days... great. He's the last guy we need missing practice time. At least he's gotten a lot of good work in so far I guess.

All of these 1-2 week injuries are really destroying our training camp. On the bright side Claiborne is back, but we still have Miles, Hatcher, Spencer, Livings, Ratliff, and now Dez nursing nagging injuries, and that doesn't even include Mike Jenkins and his shoulder. They aren't going to be in football shape, which is something people take for granted. If the game against the Giants is close into the 2nd half, a lot of our guys not being in football shape could seriously hurt us.

I wouldn't sound the alarm just yet, but color me worried for sure.

All of these injuries are for sure a little concerning. Gotta wonder if the soft new off season package the league and players agreed to isn't going to end up biting everyone in the rear.

Bringing in Jamaal Jackson.

Not a fan but we need at minimum a backup Center who can shotgun snap. I think Jackson is 100% done as a viable starting candidate though.
