If I had a question, I would say ... WHO is conducting these conditioning tests or is it just an individual thing. If another coach is conducting it or some team captain, then that's a bad sign of leadership for sure.

How bad is it?

I'm hoping Rolando McClain is this year's version of George Selvie.

Im not even talking about the leadership issue. Just the fact thats its day 1 and we already have a hammy issue. The HC cuts out the conditioning to avoid injuries and a player pulls a hammy while conditioning. We seem to be cursed with these hammys every year.

One of the reasons why he is one of my top 5 current Cowboys.

There must be a curse or something with hamstrings. They should call it the Curse of the Hambino because it's pretty ridiculous.

In both practices, the safety combination had Barry Church and J.J. Wilcox as the starters with Jakar Hamilton and Jeff Heath as the backups. The third group was Matt Johnson and Ryan Smith with Ahmad Dixon getting a snap or two. I really liked what I observed from Wilcox in regard to how he was moving around in coverage. He wasn’t out of place and when he had the responsibility of dealing with Jason Witten, he was able to quickly drive on the ball and would have been able to knock it away from him if they were playing to contact on the play. He is playing with much more quickness than what we saw last season. He had nice communication with Church when it came to making the necessary checks.
Sure hope Wilcox turns out to be a major player for us. Our Safetys have been bad for way too long.

As long as Church is out there, I will keep scouting safeties. Wilcox needs to pan out. Our secondary can't be what they have been. Historically pathetic doesn't work for me. Hearing good things about Mo which I will reserve any excitement for.

But the Cowboys decided that DL was where they wanted to use their offseason focus on, hopefully we won't have to give excuses to the secondary because the DL sucked again.

Losing Ware and Hatcher dictated that IMO. We have heavily invested in our corners but Carr and Mo have been disappointing so far. Cant blame the D-line for that. The Safety position is another matter. Weve had plenty of picks to upgrade there but for whatever reason we always pass.

One of the most frustrating thing about being a fan of this team is its consistency in ignoring trouble spots year after year and then reading in the offseason or training camp about some guy in that position who's really having a killer offseason or camp, and 'rest assured it'll be different this year'.

Sure you can. The front 7's inability to generate pressure make it harder for our corners to cover long periods of time. I wish there were some tracking that showed how much time opposing QBs had time to throw the ball against us. That would help to show if it was an inability to rush the passer or inability to cover. Would like to compare that to other teams to see if we were average, below or above average in terms of getting to the QB. If we're getting there fast, and we're getting torched, then I would blame the DBs. If we're getting there slow, and we're getting torched, I would blame the DL.

Injuries have hurt us more than anything though. Hopefully the depth on the DL will be used effectively and not be used as simply depth in case of injury. I want a strong rotation and fresh bodies.

if he actually is healthy after the MRSA infection the cowboys should definitely sign him

What's the deal with that? Hurt, contract issues or did he just suck that bad?

nicks had a really bad staph infection in his toe and a couple other players contracted it in the locker room.

the article talked about him possibly retiring, maybe to painful for him to play. but if he can manage it he still is only 29

Doctors aren't sure whether he'll ever be able to play again after recurring staph infections. He got a pretty nice settlement in exchange for agreeing not to sue the Bucs.

Sucks really bad for Nicks considering he went from an elite OG to living in pain the rest of his life due to gross facilities.

I'm 100% on you with this one. How many times have we heard about someone playing well in practice, and then they look terrible when the games come? I still remember Alan Ball. Wilcox did show some good things last year though, so maybe he's putting it together. I hope that The Unicorn shows up though. It would be something to see if Matt Johnson is actually on a gameday roster this year.

Video of the battle between Claiborne and Williams. Also some other good WR/DB matchups.

Scandrick does look bigger to me. Boyd sure looked the part out there

Been reading that Mo has looked the part so far in camp. Playing confident and with swagger. Hope that carries over into the season.

Love the new Mo. He needs it.

Scandrick looks like he never left the gym. Street's route running jumps off the screen. He made a few CBs look REALLY bad on the inside cuts. He just sets them up for failure. Not impressed again with BW Webb. Harris isn't an extremely athletic guy but he torched Webb on more than one occasion.

Tyler Patmon looks turrrable.

Terrell McClain left practice on a cart with an ankle. Hope it isn't too serious, he's a sleeper on the DL and at worst quality depth.

Speaking of the WRs, we have to have the best roster bubble group of WRs in the league. Sucks that we can only keep 1, if that.

Boyd, Newsome, Briscoe, Byrd, Washington, and even Tim Benford all should probably be on someone's 53 throughout the league. Benford and Washington might be a stretch but the others definitely.

EDIT: In fact, that's every WR on our roster after Dez, Williams, Beasley, Street, and Harris. That's 6 WR's who might all get cut who are NFL 53 quality. I hope they give Boyd a shot. He's got all the physical tools and he didn't even play last year at Vanderbilt because of academics. Might be a diamond in the rough.

Hearing McClain & The Unicorn's injuries are minor. Should be good to go :)

Cowboy Nation said that during RB vs LB pass drills that Dunbar is absolutely electric. Also a ton of praise for Escobar who has snatched the "move" TE in 2-TE sets. Lining up in the slot, outside WR, inline, and in the backfield.

Lots of mentions of the 21 set (2 RB 1 TE). With Murray as the hammer (between the tackles) and Dunbar the scatback.

Have a feeling we are going to love Linehan's offense. I don't mind if we keep throwing the ball 40 times a game if 10 of them are to Murray/Dunbar/Escobar on digs, swings, shoots, and flats. They are essentially 99% completions and get the playmakers in space.
