I think he just got a DUI as well. I wasn't complaining about not taking Kindle, just saying I'm sure even if a great pass rushing OLB drops to us we'll pass.

I think if we have a chance at one of the top OLB's this year then we will take him. Cunningham is talented and should develop into a solid starter, but we need someone opposite him. At least two of Kerrigan, Quinn, Aldon Smith, Von Miller, Akeem Ayers, and Justin Houston should be available at 17. I'm not saying I am too high on all of those guys, but if the right player falls to us then I think we need to realize that even though he may not be DeMarcus Ware we might need to take him. Quinn, Smith, and Kerrigan are guys I really like for us.

I agree with everything DV just said.
Cunningham would be the ultimate wing man to a top flight sack specialist
We just need that stud now opposite him.

Razor, I got the lotion and tissue ready...

Cunningham is helped by the fact he can play the run and set the edge well. Still haven't seen much of him in coverage and he doesn't project to be a very good player in that role...but you never know. I have mixed feelings about Cunningham at this point. Certainly not giving up on him, but we need another guy bad.

Personally I think too much is made out of the "can he play in coverage" question when it comes to these DE/OLB conversion guys. Were McGinest, Vrabel, and Colvin great coverage guys? You wouldn't ask any of them to go out in space and cover someone man on man.

But they were good because they were athletic and mobile enough to get out into the flat and keep the play in front of them. That's really all you need in my opinion. If you want a cover man then you don't look at 6'3 260 pound guys.

I thought Cunningham did a good job when he was asked to back up in coverage. I think he will be a good all around OLB but he will never put up big sack totals. I agree with everyone who said he would be great as a complement to a guy on the other side who could really rush the passer.

Eh. It helps them stay on the field. I don't think Cunningham ever projects to be more than a solid type pass rusher so it adds to his value greatly if he can play a complete game. Of those guys you mentioned, Vrabel was great in coverage and could pretty much do anything we needed him to on the field. The others were more in the "defensive end who stands up" mold.

i think what we saw in cunningham isnt everything he will be for us in the future. he was out ALOT of the preseason and didnt play in any preseason games.... he never really got his full set of reps.... his reg season was kind of like preseason..... i think he will be a very solid starter for us... dont give up on the guy already

I love Cunningham. I think he's that unspectacular consistent player that'll start for a decade straight.
I think our increased CB play and adding stud pass rusher will elevate his level of play

I like Cunningham as a Colvin type player only more athletic. He may not be a franchise pass rusher, but could be a great situational player who contributes a lot. I think he could develop into a starter but he is not the sole answer to our pass rush woes, be definitely need at least one more pass rusher and I think (hope) we look at one in the first this year. Adding a guy like Aldon Smith, Robert Quinn, or Ryan Kerrigan would be awesome and really help Cunningham out a lot with his development.

Saying he might be a situational guy isn't meant to sell him short either. Cunningham is very athletic and showed some moves in getting to the QB, plus he has some tenacity and toughness. He still needs to learn and pick up the nuances of the game which should come, but his biggest weakness is definitely his strength. He plays tough but he struggled to finish sacks and didn't really have much of a power game last year. I think Cunningham will improve and develop into a solid starter, but he definitely showed us some encouraging signs last year.

I think a DE, OLB, and CB could help Cunningham out a lot. Bodden coming back will help, but I don't expect him to stay healthy. He hasn't been overly healthy his entire career.

Arrington was "serviceable" at best.

Right now, my 3 favorite prospects are Cam Jordan, Jimmy Smith, and Justin Houston - which could very well be picks 17, 28, and 33. Of course, this completely ignores the needs on the OL (with mankins future uncertain, stephen neal's career going to retire soon, and other issues), RB, and WR positions.

I don't see Cunningham as good of an athlete as some of you guys do. I think he he's one of those guys who gets off the line really quickly and uses his hands well and such...but as we've discussed before I don't think he's got that burst at the end of the play. Should be a 6+ sack a year guy when he's on his game, but I can't see any more than that on a year in year out basis. There's nothing wrong with that, but that's my reasoning for being interested in seeing how he comes a long. It's still very early in the process for Cunningham and there's a chance I'm completely wrong, but I'm really not sold on him being more than an average starter just quite yet.

I see Cunningham as still being pretty raw, yet he developed into a very nice all-around player. He picked up all of Ninkovich's positional duties rather quickly and looked solid in coverage. Whether he can develop into a very good pass rusher really is up in the air. He's got a lot of room to grow, physically. In any case, I think the Pats have at least one long-term starter at OLB - finally.

I'm on the boat of believing Cunningham will be a good player and average starter, I can't see him becoming much more. He is not a freak of nature, but he is a very quick guy for his size. His issue is not his athleticism but his strength and technique, he is very raw and needs to become stronger. He is smooth though and has the talent to contribute, but like I said I see him as a Colvin type player for us. A good situational player who would really be at his best if we had a couple other OLB's who could take the bulk of the snaps, like Colvin had in Vrable and McGinnest.

If we can get 6 or so sacks a year out of Cunningham then that's better than what the Pats have gotten out of most of their front 7 players in recent years, and that would actually be pretty good.

I look at him this way. He did a good job against the run, was probably the best Pats OLB at putting pressure on the QB (even if he didn't get the sacks), and he held his own in coverage. All this after having never played the position before. He was strictly a hand on the ground DE at Florida. So I think there's a lot of potential there.

He may never be a Pro bowler, but he should be a solid starter for the Pats. As for sacks, he was never really a sack guy even in college, so we can't expect him to be a double digit sack man in the pros. If he can get 5 or 6 a year while being good in run defense, that will be great. Just need a good pass rushing OLB opposite him.

Just finished the forum mock over in the fantasy section (unless we decide to go to a fourth round.) There were no trades, but let me know what you think of the haul:

17. DE Cameron Jordan, California

28. OG Mike Pouncey, Florida

33. OT Tyron Smith, Southern California*

60. LB Brooks Reed, Arizona

74. RB DeMarco Murray, Oklahoma

92. CB Davon House, New Mexico St.

Looks pretty good to me. I'm not as high on Cam Jordan as a lot of people are, but that's just personal preference. It fits the need.

Also, I would have liked to see a better OLB. I like Reed but he's a bit of a project imo. Not sure how much he helps this season. Don't know if he was still on the board but I much prefer Jeremy Beal. Again, just personal preference.

I love the Murray pick. Fingers crossed that he can stay healthy.

Funny I see LOTS of mocks that give House to the Pats. Not complaining about it necessarily. I don't really know anything about him, and I'm fine with them taking a CB early in this draft. But it's just interesting how that particular guy gets mocked to the Pats so frequently in the late third round.

First reaction: **** yeah!
Would make absolute sense, I really do think that we're going to see a trade up for someone.

There is such depth and value at DL/LB this year they can jump up, grab someone like Green and still get quality guys in round 2-3.

I'd be a happy panda.

My first reaction is who, other than someone involved in the Pats draft room, would know such a thing?
My second reaction is why would that person come out and tell that to Mel Kiper?
My third reaction is I wonder how long before BB fires that person?

My first reaction is ********. Nothing like that would EVER get out about us, especially if it's true.

Exactly, it's been speculated BB likes to hint at stuff like this before draft day to either increase interest or confuse other teams as to what our plan is. If it is true and it happens I couldn't be too upset considering the depth in this draft of Dlinemen. If it's true and this was leaked I'm sure BB and staff already have a deal worked out with some team if Green falls to them.

Signings like Marcus Stroud make sense if you are thinking package picks to trade up. If we can fill a few voids with vets it makes it more plausible to think we may move up for an impact player like Green.

In case you missed it the Globe is reporting the pats signed Stroud to 2 year deal earlier today.
