lol

I stand by my assumption that he figures he'll get a better pay day with a contract elsewhere + the money NE will still have to pay.

Dont know hoe Vince can get more than 1 year 4 mil, its what Raji signed and he is younger

Quote:
A source tells ProFootballTalk that free agent CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie turned down a six-year, $54 million offer from the Broncos.
The offer was made prior to the Broncos reached out to Darrelle Revis and Aqib Talib. Now Rodgers-Cromartie is the odd man out in a game of musical chairs. He's the best corner remaining on the market, but teams may be turned off by his retirement talk during Super Bowl week. DRC should've jumped on that Broncos offer.

According to the New York Daily News, the Jets will sign TE Brandon Pettigrew shortly

Raiders signed DE Justin Tuck to a two-year, $11 million contract.

Hopefully with the money from cutting Wilfork the Pats can sign a DT and bring in Steve Smith.

Is Henry Melton a viable option? I don't know what he's asking for. There are some veterans at DT that I bet can be had for a cheap price. Mike Patterson, Pat Sims, Andre Fluellen, Brandon Deadrick. Having any one of those guys along with Silaga, a healthy Tommy Kelly, and Vellano isn't a bad group.

lol @ DRC

Vince, if relatively healthy, is still infinitely better than Raji.

I don't get the "2-down player" talk. When has he been a 2-down player? He's very effective on passing downs.

He's been pissed off before. I don't see them letting him go - they'll talk to his wife and smooth it over. They'd just as soon eat the entire $11 million because if he's healthy, he's still an incredibly impactful player for this team.

Kelly restructured his deal with us, about a million. I'll take anything we can get. Plus the Revis hit only costs us 7 Million this season. Not too shabby.

It's because he's not an effective pass rusher.

Look at Wilfork's stats 2010 to 2012.

7 sacks/ 9 hits/ 43 "pressures" in 1345 pass rushing snaps.

Compare that to Siliga/Vellano/Jones; a collection of 2 UDFA's and a twice waived 6th round pick. They cost us $927,000 last year.

11 sacks/ 5 hits/ 31 "pressures" in 862 pass rushing snaps.

Over the same amount of snaps that would project to:

17 sacks/ 8 hits/ 48 pressures

And those were entirely scrap heap guys.

Patriots agreed to CB Brandon Browner, formerly of the Seahawks, on a two-year contract.

ARRRGGGGHHHHH. Craziest FA ever

Quote:
A "well-placed" team source tells ESPN's Adam Schefter that free agent CB Brandon Browner is close to an agreement with the Patriots, but that it's a "tough deal to do because of suspension, etc."

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports that Browner has "spread the word to those close to him" that he's agreed to terms with the Pats, but his agent vehemently denies it. Browner's rep has spoken directly with many reporters. As such, the deal can't be considered official, but it likely will be some time in the next 24 hours.

Eh, I don't know which Wilfork you have been watching recently but he hasn't done that consistently for the last few years. He shows up in some games, Houston 2 years a go and the Ravens when we last won the AFCCG, but really he has been a good to very good DT for the past few years, definitely not worth paying $7.5m this year especially when you add in his injury.

And it's not like the Pats pressured the QB tremendously when he was there either. In fact as a team they got better pressure on the QB last year when he went down. Yes he is better all around than what we have though, against the pass Chris Jones provided what Wilfork did and Siliga provided what he did in the run game.

I love Vince and he will go down as one of my favorite Pats, but at that salary there was no way he was going to hang around. He just doesn't add that much

I find the argument that Vince Wilfork doesn't add much to the team to be pretty absurd. Wilfork's ability to play nose tackle in both the 3-4 and 4-3, as well as five-technique in the 3-4, has allowed Bill Belichick to get creative with his defensive fronts and singlehandedly ensured that the Patriots annually fielded a stout run defense. When he got hurt last year, teams were able to run up the middle for strong gains on a consistent basis, and we finished thirtieth against the run. Has he really been out of action for so logn that people have forgotten what he adds to the team? I'll agree that his cap number is high given his age/injury, but he's still one of New England's most important defenders.

The D was certainly better vs. the run with Vince in there. Still, there's no reason to think he'll be back at 100% (possibly ever) and he's not worth that high price tag. It's too big a cap hit for a situational player, which is what he's become with the shift to spread, fast paced, passing attacks.

I don't disagree that Vince is an impact run defender, but there are a lot of really solid run DT's that make nowhere near Vince's $12 million cap hit. The Pats were bad against the run last year, but part of that was an extreme situation where their 3 top DT's and their best LB all got hurt. Once Siliga came in and stabilized the defense they immediately jumped up to a middle of the pack rushing defense. If we get another body in there like a Kevin Williams or a Pat Sims we'll be fine.

This is a passing league, we're making moves to become a faster and more dynamic defense. We have a killer back 7, now we just need to create a front that can force QB's into making mistakes. Vince was a huge 2 gap NT who was great in that role, but I think we're moving away from that philosophy which is probably a good thing. For all of those year's we fielded one of the league's worst defenses, Vince was our top player. He's not a centerpiece of a defense, and he's being paid like one now.

Kevin Williams would be a good get or I can see them looking at Nix or Jones out of Penn State

He added a level of flexibility which was obviously a plus, but the Patriots were gashed when they played with 2 DTs who are about 300lbs soaking wet, both rookies and both natural UTs. When they added Siliga the run defense become much more stout.

To expand on this, Siliga played 5 games in the regular season. In those 5 games the Pats averaged 121.6 yards against per game which is good for about 20th in the league. But if you take into account Tyrod Taylor picked up 40 yards at the end of the Baltimore game against prevent defense you end up around 113 yards per game which would be around the league average.

The Patriots seem to have made a conscious effort to get better in the back 7 which means they shouldn't have to be as creative up front.

I am not too concerned about the run defense. It will be fine and the pass game is where the money is made. Wilfork has been a great player for the Pats but he wasn't worth close to the contract when healthy, and now it was a no brainer.

Well said. It's what I was saying to my neighbor this morning at the kids' bus stop. He's really a square peg with a round hole. Our D is far more 4-3 and sub packages, and Vince's fit is poor in those sets. I truly want to see him retire here. The market for him isn't likely to be great, even if the Pats release him.

Woodyard sign with Tennessee 4 year-16mil...easily out of the Pats reach, I was thinking a 2-year 6 mil

wonder if this puts Shazier/Smith/Pierre Louis/Trip into play for the draft

This whole Wilfork thing has me looking into next year with Mankins.

This will be the same situation with his contract and he is more stubborn than Vince and I can actually see him retire if he gets cut next year.

Add to the fact that both Connoly and Cannon to be FA and I can see the Pats going interior line high and draft more than 1
