Telvin Smith is easily my favorite, prospect/value match in the entire draft. He plays tougher against the run than Shazier despite only being 220#. A nickel package of Smith, Collins, Revis, McCourty, Browner, Ryan, and Harmon would be absurd.

Likely to be a deal that makes him an inexpensive cut next year, by my guess.

Ian Rapoport ‏@RapSheet 18m
The contract for new #Ravens WR Steve Smith pays him nearly $12M over three seasons, per source.

So much for adding a veteran WR to help Brady out. The Patriot's group of receivers is scary right now (in a bad way). Thompkins, Boyce, Dobson, Amendola. One's coming off foot surgery, one missed almost the entire season, the other played through the season with a groin injury and is almost always injured. Looking at Nicks getting a one year 3m dollar deal kinda hurts now. I'm just worried because it seems that at the moment the Patriots are counting on Vereen, Gronkowski, Amendola, Thompkins, Dobson, and Boyce being healthy for a full season and none of them were last year. I don't even know what the deal with Thompkins is because I read this, it's a month old:

Quote:
Patriots second-year receiver Kenbrell Thompkins "was less than stellar in an injury-riddled season" and will have to fight for a 2014 roster spot, reports the Boston Globe. The undrafted rookie caught 32 passes for 466 yards and four touchdowns while dropping five passes and fell behind fellow rookie Aaron Dobson.
I like what Belichick is doing in the secondary though. Building his defenses to play against pass happy offenses like Denver. A secondary with Revis, Browner, Ryan, Dennard, and McCourty is going to be great. Also I could see Jamie Collins dropping back into coverage a lot at LB.

I wonder if BB will reach out to LaGarrette Blount next. If he isn't investing in receivers then I guess he must be set on this ground and pound style that came out towards the end of the season.

I'm just really curious as to what this offense is going to look like because between injuries/youth I don't see a reason to have much confidence in any of the skill position players other than Brady.

FA isn't over yet, I would think a C/OG is more important plus we still have a chance with Edelman

Why are people so intent on resigning edelmen? Like honestly, thats seriously the solution? Because weve already seen how that works out. Lets just say we make it out of the afc next year, what do you think teams like the 9ers and the hawks are going to do? You honestly think edelmen as a #1 is going to be the difference maker? I seriously am lost on that logic. Edelemen as the #1 hurts our team. It will take up more money hes not worth, and prevent us from trying to make any moves to upgrade, which it looks like were not doing anyway so **** it i guess. Lets just let brady ride off into the sunset throwing to undrafted quarterbacks. Great.

Kiko Alonso, Brandon Spikes, Keith Rivers, Manny Lawson, Mario Williams, Jerry Hughes.

That should be a fun group of LBers to play twice a year.

I don't get the hate on signing Edelman. I don't really see any major improvements in FA. The draft has better WRs that will go in the 4th round than the ones that are FAs right now. Nicks hasn't been good in a while. Smith is maybe a second WR at this point too.

The signing I take more issue with is Hoomanawanui. There were good move TEs in FA and we clearly could use one. Though, those can be found in the draft later too.

So lets draft one and spend the money else where. Better yet, lets trade with arizona for fitz, lets try to actively upgrade the position instead of bringing in a guy who allows us to have a crutch for brady through the regular season, inflating numbers against the afc east and then when we get to the playoffs he can put up numbers in the 4th quarter when teams go into prevent and weve already lost the game (holy long sentence). Were going to over pay him, and for what, so brady has a target hes familiar with? Then why didnt we just bring back branch last year, seeing thats Brady's favorite player. All that move does is allow us to become complacent at the position when weve already seen edelmen as our 1 doesnt work. I mean christ, welker didnt work as our number 1 so why are we ok with edelemen being our 1?

Nobody is saying Edelman is and should be our #1, and I doubt Nicks and Steve Smith would be #1. There are no true # 1's in this FA class.

We still could trade for a vet during the draft and wouldn't be shocked if Fitz or Roddy White we available.

Drafting is tough cause WR do not make much impact in year 1, I can see Watkins, Evans and Cook who can contribute right away but we would have to trade up for them.

Hoo man is just a piece I can see us looking at Owen Daniels or Keller later. No to Finley, high drop rate and don't know if he can be healthy

We still need interior on both lines and a 3rd or really 2nd pass rusher

If we didnt upgrade it last year when we clearly needed it why would we do it now? Resigning edelmen is going to allow BB to become complacent because we can end up winning games. It just isnt going to help in the postseason. Really going to be frustrating that we'll resign edelemen but not welker. And youre crazy if you think nicks wouldnt be more of a true 1 than anything we have right now.

Yeah call me crazy thinking a WR who scored 3 Tds in 2 years and has lacked any explosion. There is a reason he got 3.5 mil

I seem to recall a disgruntled wr having a few down years after being on a struggling team coming here and setting the we td record. Yes nicks isnt moss but the giants ******* blew last year, and the year prior to that Nicks wasnt healthy and still torched Talib for like 200 yards that season. I guess its crazy to think 3.5 million is a safe gamble to fix a position which needs a player exactly what Nicks has shown he can be.

I think its far more telling that NO ONE has signed edelmen in fa. Has nothing to do with the fact his last season was a product of being bradys number one target or anything. No one is paying this guy but us, thats telling. Hes only valuable to us because we have no one else, not because hes a difference maker. That should motivate us to go out and improve the position, not keep it static.

I think Edelman just doesn't want to play for another team if he doesn't have to. I want him back because he's the one guy on this team you can rely on to bring everything on every play. It'll be better when he's the other inside option opposite Gronk and they have outside options that allow Edelman to get the ball in space.

Relying on Dobson, Thompkins, and Boyce to take the next step is a gamble, but it's not like any of them were duds in 2013. It would have been nice to land Nicks if he wanted to come to New England, but there really isn't much else out there that would be considered a real upgrade over what Thompkins and Dobson were bringing to the outside when healthy. They both missed 4 games each and still combined for ~1000 yards. That's pretty good.

Let's not forget how much injuries affected this team. They'll be better and deeper for it in 2014 just by default. Gronk changes everything on offense. Wilfork changes everything on defense. They're a Super Bowl team with those two last year. Anything they add beyond that and any healthier they are just raises the ceiling.

They need to fix the interior OL and find someone to complement and backup Gronk. Hooman is the perfect 3rd TE, but they need a guy who can split out and take advantage of mismatches. Defensively, I'm interested to see how their young linemen develop. I'd like to see another pass rusher added to the rotation, and they need to find new depth at linebacker.

I guess i should emphasize im not opposed to edelmen back entirely, however itd have to be extremely team friendly (doubt that happens when we sign him) and BB would have to still be looking for options to upgrade (which i dont see happening either). I also want dline/oline upgraded just as much as everyone else. I just think the money we'll give to edelmen will take more cap room away from us but maybe i should see how it playa out before making those assumptions. Just seems like were going against our own philosophy of playig a player based on need as opposed to talent.
