So the Pats are not among those 8, right? Losing to Baltimore will probably end up being a long-term boon.

Correct. Lets hope so.
If any good could come of losing in the Playoffs- let it be this

Gotta love BB. We went a season without an OC
Now he's hinting about not assigning a DC now

Netiher do I.. He's spread to thin as it is, this is not going to help. I get the idea, since he probably wants to influence his young defense more and this allows him to get really close to them every day. But I would rather have a DC come in from outside the organisation and introduce some new ideas to this team. That goes for offense as well.

Just give the damn DC job to Pepper. OC isn't a big issue with Brady, but it would still be nice to see someone helping there.
Either way, he can't do all 3 jobs. Someone needs to take over one of the Coordinator job.

Not bc its whats best for the team. With assistants and with draft picks.

I think BB runs the team differently at this point than he did when we were smelling blood every year in the title hunt. Everything seems to be some sort of experiment to stay ahead of the game. It sucks because if we played things more conventionally, it would be better for the team in a lot of ways. But it is what it is at this point.
Now, onto Wilfork news. It looks like we could have an uncapped year...the situation could be very interesting.

Haha yeah. That would be sweet. This entire thing just makes the Wilfork thing more interesting. Could be really, really good for us so long as we frontload it as to not get screwed with the new CBA, but it could be bad for us too. Another team might be willing to make a mistake to get Wilfork.

Haha, nice.. But there's some talk that teams that go on a spending spree will get some kind of punishment in the next CBA. Not quite sure how they would do that, but still..
If we tag Vince, I think he's gone no matter what next year. So I'm almost at that point where I want BB to tag him and trade him for a first and a second round pick. There's definetly a market for him, and two high picks (maybe 2nd pick this year, first round pick next year) could help the Patriots more than having VW even if he is the best DL in the NFL (and he is, no doubt about that).

I see only two teams who would possibly trade a 1st and 2nd for him. Miami desperately need a NT and Wilfork said he'd love to play in Florida but would BB trade him within the division???
The other team being Denver. They need a big run stuffer up front and if McDaniels doesn't like the players in the draft he may pull the trigger. This is a possibility but I think there will be enough players in the draft to satisfy the Broncos.
Other teams with interest would be TB and KC who won't give up the 3rd or 5th pick respectively(not that BB would want it), Buffalo are also in the division, Jacksonville don't have the picks to have the luxury of going after VW, SF are more likely to tag Franklin, and SDs picks are that late in the round a 1st and a 2nd is almost a 2nd and a 3rd.
If he's going to be traded after tagged my money is on Denver, but who knows maybe Al Davis will offer his whole draft plus Nnamdi for him.

Through the 2010 and 2011 drafts we have
3 first round picks &
4 second round picks
What we need is Vince ******* Wilfork. What we don't need is more "potential" in the form of young guys who have a truckload of learning to do before they can contribute anywhere close to the level V-Weazy is at - if they can ever reach that level at all.
Over 2 rounds since 07 we have acquired a great deal of talent. We need to keep some of the veteran talent around to help them succeed.
2009: Chung, Butler, Brace, Vollmer
2008: Mayo, Wheatley
2007: Merriweather
We'll likely add at least 3 more this year and 3 more next year for a total of 13 young, talented prospects over 4 years. That is a crazy influx of talent. It is also a crazy influx of clueless rookies who (especially on defense) need time and coaching to become consistent contributors. Guys like Guyton, McKenzie, Tate and Wilhite should be mentioned, too, which brings us to a staggering total of nearly 20 young players in a 4 year span.
Add to that the fact that we keep losing coordinators and other coaches and you see how the situation has devolved to where we are now. We have lost all the vets in a short time and all the coaches who have helped BB develop that talent.
We really need to keep the veteran leaders. Especially young(ish) studs like Wilfork and Mankins.

Very much this. There's knowing when to let go and letting go too soon. Letting Mankins and Wilfork walk would be a big, big mistake.

Mankins can't walk. He'll get RFA tagged or Franchise tagged. Wilfork (and others like Peppers) needs to look around the league...no team is talking to any players until they know whether it'll be an uncapped year or not.
