Faster two down backers who were better prospects fell out of the top 50 last year. Two down ILBs just don't go that early. When those 2-down LBs are slow they definitely don't go that early. Spikes will now be a 3rd round pick at best.

First of all, I would disagree that Guyton is a third down specialist. We don't know that about him yet. Second of all, I agree that Spikes would be a two down linebacker for us. That's NOT a good thing. You don't spend a second rounder on two down linebackers, and as Elvis mentioned, guys who were much more athletic than Spikes fell due to similar concerns about their ability to stay on the field on third down last year. Maualuga also had better game film than Spikes does.

Well... The last part might be true, but I'm not going to drop him in my rankings just because he didn't perform today. He has performed on saturdays for some years now, that's all I need to see. And many might not put much stock into a two down LB, but if selecting him means that our opponents one average will be looking at 3rd and 6 instead of 3rd and 2 I'm fine with selecting him higher than most would've. We did that with Vollmer and that turned out just fine. Or, at least so it seems at this point in time.

I don't see Spikes in our team at all. We'd be better off drafting Chaney or sticking with Guyton, and if he struggles, then we get one next year.

Tyrone McKenzie is singing "Don't you forget about me..." I think we already have our SILB on the roster. Belichick praised him a lot and he opened soome eyes in rookie mini camp before he got hurt.

yes, spikes ran slow. but you also got to remember he was running on a WET grass, which will slow down his time as well. i honestly think he'd be a perfect pick for us at the end of the second. he would be perfect next to mayo imo

Dunlap and Haden had no problem improving their 40s and Hernandez also did fine on the same grass. The grass is not an excuse for his disappointing 40 time.

For me Spikes is probably off the table unless he falls to the 4th. Game tape doesn't lie and while he may not have the speed of Weatherspoon or even McClain he didn't look like a 5 plus guy in the forty on the field. That being said he is almost certainly a two down linebacker. I see him as a rich man's Jasper Brinkley.
With a combination of McKenzie and Guyton playing beside Mayo, we have far too many needs to draft a guy that high if he is only a role player/special teamer.
I would be surprised if he fell that far because he was a real good player in college but stranger things have happened.

Exactly. Well said ACD. Spikes just isn't beastly enough all around to forgo filling a big hole at another position. Give McKenzie & Gary the rotational spots, let them duke it out for playing time and use that 2nd round pick elsewhere.

Unless we somehow get McClain in the first. Then, pull the ******* trigger.

I dont think it's too out of this world unrealistic for McClain to fall to 22 but it is unlikely. If he's there it will mean he will almost certainly be BPA at a position of relative need and would be a good choice. I also think BB will love him due to his size/intelligence/intensity and the Saban factor. Would love him in NE

Plus he can move around. He could play outside pretty easily and be relativity successful. Strong blitzer.

I'm excited but I'm not going to lie I'm also pretty nervous. We have all been projecting our needs and what we will do with our picks but as Pats fans we always should be prepared for shocks on draft day.
Plz just at least one linebacker day 1. I like Elvis' draft personally.

Yeah, I'm preparing myself for something like this:
1. McCourty
2. Gronkowski
2. Tebow
2. Dwyer
So we come out of the first two rounds with no OLB again, one need filled and only 2 players I even like at this point.
At which point I will queue up the facepalm.

I would cry. Tebow would be such a shot in the balls.
Elvis I am adding the we will not draft Tebow in my sig. We all should.

I think it might be something like:
1. DE Jared Odrick, Penn St.
2. TE Aaron Hernandez, Florida
2. WR Damian Williams, Southern California
2. LB Ricky Sapp, Clemson

This would be a nightmare imo, but it's just so realistic. BB loves drafting DL in the first, and Sapp fits his M.O. so perfectly that I'm certain he'll be a Patriot. Crap!

I like it. The power of positive thinking.
Wait, if we're using a the negative "will not" be a Patriot, does that count? lol
I just hope the video EE linked shows Sapp looking super soft because of his alleged injury. If he can turn into a good pro I wouldn't mind Odrick / Hernandez / Williams / Sapp. It would definitely be better than the one I listed with Tebow.

I don't really like Sapp at all, reminds me of Crable with that long frame and athleticism. I like the though of a DE or WR with Oaklands pick next year, and I personally hope we don't take Odrick in the first especially if Kindle/Graham or another top OLB is available.
I could honestly see us not taking a linebacker with our first 3 picks. I'd be really surprised if we don't take one in the first day. We need to build up our OL and front 7 badly.

I'm pretty sure we have touched the subject before, but what do you guys think about Kaczur at guard? He is a good run blocker but gets crisped by athletic pass rushers. Neal played well last year but he doesn't have much left, and we definitely could use at least one more lineman. I would be down to draft a tackle and kick him in, we haven't seen a starting lineman switch around positions like that as far as I can remember but it could be a nice experiment.
