Football season is officially here, and the scouting grind is heating up! The Draft Countdown team and our community members have been burning the midnight oil, watching tape. In this week’s mailbag, we are tackling big-board risers, potential first-round fallers, trench battles, and a close look at the Big Ten and SEC landscapes.
Let’s dive right into the questions!
2027 NFL Draft Mailbag #2:
Question 1: The Indiana Receiver Room & First-Round Risers/Fallers
Shane H. from Pittsburgh, PA wants to know who the best Indiana wide receiver is, along with an early pick for a player to rise out of nowhere into first-round consideration, and conversely, a projected first-rounder who could fall hard.
The Answer:
Let’s start with the Indiana wide receivers. I believe as we stand right now (I am writing this before the game against North Texas), that Charlie Becker is the better prospect. He has shown great hands and possesses good size. Becker stood out a year ago on an offense with two NFL draftees, including first-round pick Omar Cooper. Nick Marsh, on the other hand, has been more dynamic and hasn’t played with the best QB prospects before. I believe that by late April, if either of them is even in this draft class, Marsh will be the higher draft pick.
In my last mock draft, I said I believed South Carolina WR Nyck Harbor would be a first-round pick. Harbor is currently 77th on the MDDB board. However, when he blows up Indy with a 4.25 forty, he is going in round one.
The one player I think may fall out of the first is Alabama WR Ryan Coleman-Williams. Coleman-Williams came in as a true freshman with tremendous buzz and played like it. But had a big-time sophomore slump. RCW dealt with several drops and has been nicked up. Now he is playing with an untested QB in Keelon Russell. If Coleman-Williams can’t clean up his drops and perform better than he did in 2025, I could see him not even entering the draft. And if he does, falling out of round one.
Question 2: Trench Warfare — Most Intriguing Line Units
Brad M. from Indiana asks which offensive and defensive lines are the most intriguing heading into the college football season.
The Answer:
This is an interesting question. Especially when considering it from an NFL Draft perspective. For the offensive line, I am going with Ohio State. The Buckeyes feature five offensive linemen who could hear their names called in April. Including two that I believe are at least day-two players: Austin Siereveld and Carson Hinzman. Luke Montgomery and Phillip Daniels are projected day-three players. While third-year offensive tackle Ian Moore may have the most upside. I also considered Michigan, LSU, and Iowa (because of course) for this.
On defense, I ultimately went with Oregon. The Nike flagship school trots out players that I have ranked in the Top 60 overall prospects. DL A’Mauri Washington is a freak athlete that I have ranked 14th overall. His running mate, DL Bear Alexander, is just outside the top 32. I also like edge rushers Matayo Uiagalelei and Teitum Tuioti. I would be remiss not to mention that LSU and Miami-FL could also have easily been in this spot.
Question 3: SEC Quarterback Surprises
Bubba from Georgia checks in with a question about surprise quarterbacks in the SEC. Specifically nominating Kamario Taylor of Mississippi State.
The Answer:
While I agree with Bubba that Kamario Taylor could be a big surprise at QB in the SEC this year, he isn’t draft-eligible as a 2nd-year prospect. Of the draft-eligible SEC QBs, the name I kept circling back to as a potential surprise is Auburn’s Byrum Brown. Brown had a ton of success a year ago under Alex Golesh at USF. Now, they both set up on the Plains with a chance to cause problems for SEC defenses. Although if he plays again as he did against Baylor, forget we ever mentioned this.
