4. Scouting & Transfer Notes
Background Profile
Mateer grew up a prolific playmaker at Little Elm High School in Texas, rewriting the school record books with 7,060 passing yards, 1,223 rushing yards, and 88 total touchdowns before signing with Washington State. After serving as a high-value weapon off the bench in his underclassman seasons, Mateer exploded onto the national stage as the full-time starter in 2024, posting 3,965 total yards and 44 total touchdowns.
Looking to follow the path of former Cougar Cam Ward, Mateer entered the transfer portal after the 2024 loop and joined his former offensive coordinator, Ben Arbuckle, in Norman. In his 2025 debut with the Oklahoma Sooners, he smashed the program record for debut passing yardage with a 392-yard display against Illinois State.
Despite battling a mid-season hand injury, Mateer’s gritty leadership guided Oklahoma to a 10-2 regular-season record and a College Football Playoff appearance.
Key Strengths
- Elite Dual-Threat Creation Skillset: Possesses game-breaking running capability, accumulating 1,407 rushing yards and 26 career touchdowns on the ground, making him a dynamic zone-read asset.
- Highly Developed Off-Script Extension: Demonstrates supreme escapability and functional play strength at 218 pounds to shrug off loop rushers and create chunk plays out of structure.
- Aggressive Column Attack: Possesses a strong, quick-release arm, showing full willingness to challenge tight coverage windows downfield and layer throws outside the numbers.
- Elite Dynamic Toughness & Poise: Played through physical adversity in 2025 to secure signature Power-4 wins against Michigan and Auburn while engineering an elite playoff-bound offensive unit.
Developmental Focus
Mateer’s primary mission in his final SEC season will be to show more consistent control in his decision-making when the pocket becomes chaotic. While his playmaking instincts are top-tier, his aggressiveness led to 11 interceptions during his junior campaign.
NFL evaluators want to see Mateer develop a better internal clock when working through full-field progressions, taking his checkdowns more readily rather than opting for low-percentage, high-risk deep throws. Refining his lower-body platform to eliminate erratic ball placement under pressure will go a long way in proving his traits can translate cleanly to a multi-layered NFL offense.
Draft Countdown Film Notes
9/12/26 (Michigan) 17/33, 184 YDS, 1 TD, 1 INT; 8 ATT, 45 YDS | Pocket presence was extremely off in this game. Mateer missed high several times and couldn’t make the plays when his team needed him.
9/26/26 (at Georgia) 25/34, 231 YDS, 2 TD, 1 INT | Mateer continues to make too many mistakes. He has no consistency whatsoever. At one point, Mateer turned the ball over on 3 straight possessions.
