2023 NFL Draft Impact on Super Bowl Rosters

As Super Bowl week is wrapping up, and in turn this awesome 2023 NFL Season, I wanted to take a look at what the 2023 NFL Draft impact was on both rosters. Can Kansas City do it again? Will San Fran finally get over the hump? I don’t have those answers, what I do have is a list of draft picks and an opinion in my Get that Sweet Bonanza demo!

2023 NFL Draft Impact – Kansas City Chiefs

  • Round 1 (No. 31): EDGE Felix Anudike-Uzomah
  • Round 2 (No. 55 from Vikings through Lions): WR Rashee Rice
  • Round 3 (No. 92 from Bengals): OT Wanya Morris
  • Round 4 (No. 119 from Lions through Vikings): S Chamarri Conner
  • Round 5 (No. 166): S BJ Thompson
  • Round 6 (No. 194 from Lions): DL Keondre Coburn
  • Round 7 (No. 250): CB Nic Jones

The AFC representative has plenty of talent but one player from the 2023 class stands above the rest as the most impactful, and it’s easily 2nd round pick Rashee Rice. After week 5, he never saw less than 35 snaps and no other rookie on the team comes close to his value return to the team this season. He was 3rd on the offense, behind Mahomes and Kelce, in terms of snaps this year, and turned in a fine rookie performance. Numbers-wise, Rice turned in a strong rookie campaign, catching 79 balls for 938 yards and 7 touchdowns, on 102 targets.

Wanya Morris was a nice bright spot near the end of the year when he saw his snap count go from nil to 100% from week 14 on. He didn’t grade out the best if you look to PFF, for instance, allowing 2 sacks and getting 3 penalties. But playing left tackle is never an easy situation when you face the Chargers, Bengals, Raiders, and Bills amid his first 5 starts (New England was the other).

Outside of Rice, the Chiefs spent a lot of resources on the defensive side of the ball. Conner and Uzomah saw their snaps increase as the season went on, but none of the picks outside of Rice saw a huge impact. The majority of the reason why is due to the defense staying fairly healthy all season, and the defense being pretty strong overall, it was the receiver position that needed someone to step up (and Rice made the most of his opportunity).

2023 NFL Draft Impact – San Francisco 49ers

  • Round 3 (No. 87 from Vikings): CB Ji’Ayir Brown
  • Round 3 (No. 99): K Jake Moody
  • Round 3 (No. 101): TE Cameron Latu
  • Round 5 (No. 155 from Dolphins): CB Darrell Luter Jr.
  • Round 5 (No. 173): EDGE Robert Beal Jr.
  • Round 6 (No. 216): LB Dee Winters
  • Round 7 (No. 247): TE Brayden Willis
  • Round 7 (No. 253): WR Ronnie Bell
  • Round 7 (No. 255): LB Jalen Graham

San Fran is a team that is strong in basically every position, so this draft class felt more like they were trying to build depth with future potential than anything else. Jake Moody would be the clearcut player that stands out heading into the Super Bowl. Moody was solid in the regular season, completing 21 of 25 attempts, with 2 being over 50 yards. He only missed 1 extra point but his postseason has been a bit more rocky.

On the offensive side, Ronnie Bell saw the most snaps with 106 but otherwise the offensive rookies were fairly quiet in 2023. On the defensive side, Brown was a bright spot when on the field, he missed some time and didn’t start at the beginning of the year, but graded out fairly well and showed some of the talent that made him a 3rd round pick in this year’s draft. Beal and Winters saw the field but just didn’t play a huge role in 2023.

When your team is stacked, then adds Chase Young at the trade deadline, the rookie class isn’t being asked to play a prominent role. This team has been built the right way, and it has allowed them to not have to thrust rookies onto the field before they were ready.
