Small School Scouting: Coastal Carolina Dominates Kansas

Grayson McCall

For the rest of the 2021 college football season, I will be writing about the top prospects from at least one game involving a smaller school that happens to play on a weekday. What are we considering a smaller school? Well, for now, as long as the classification exists, any school that is not a Power Five school.

Today, we are going to look at the domination by the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers over the Kansas Jayhawks, 49-22.

COASTAL CAROLINA CHANTICLEERS

10   QB        Grayson McCall  rSO  6-3     200

I wrote about McCall a few weeks ago but this was my first time getting to see him this year. McCall made several NFL-level throws against the Jayhawks. He has a strong arm and almost always throws a catchable ball to his receivers. The Coastal Carolina option offense bugs me from an evaluation standpoint. It also leads to McCall taking unnecessary shots. I still wonder if he will actually declare this year. McCall finished 17/21 for 245 yards and two TDs. He also had a rushing TD.

4      TE        Isaiah Likely         Sr     6-4     245

Likely is a nice target for a QB. He is a good route runner and a selfless teammate. Likely has nice hands and is a great blocker. He blocked a defender ten yards into the endzone in the third quarter. I think Likely has a chance to be a Top 100 player after the process is over. He caught five passes for 40 yards on nine targets.

6      WR      Jaivon Heiligh     Sr     6-2     200

Heiligh is a tremendous athlete. He is quick and has solid hands. Heiligh has return ability although he didn’t get the chance against Kansas. I think for him to have a chance to really elevate himself up draft boards, Heiligh will have to show a better grasp of the route tree. However, he had a huge night against the Jayhawks, catching six of his seven targets for 122 yards and a score.

94   EDGE Jeffrey Gunter     Sr     6-4     260

Gunter was disruptive most of the night for the Chants. He completely blew up a 4th and 1 attempt for KU. He finished with two tackles and a half-sack.

91   EDGE Manny Johnson  Jr      6-6     265

Johnson is one of the top defenders for Coastal Carolina but unfortunately, he did not play on Friday night.
