How The Patriots Built Through The Draft To Reach Super Bowl LX

patriots draft super bowl

For years, the New England Patriots were an NFL juggernaut. The organization just seemed to do everything at an extremely high level. However, following Tom Brady‘s departure, their success dwindled. They struggled to find consistency. The organization parted ways with longtime HC Bill Belichick. Following one season under Jerod Mayo as head coach, the team eventually hired Mike Vrabel as its 16th head coach. With the Patriots set to compete in Super Bowl LX, we can look back at their success in the NFL Draft as to why they’re back in the Championship.

2023 NFL Draft

The New England Patriots finished 8-9 in 2022, resulting in the 17th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. With the 17th draft pick, the Patriots selected Christian Gonzalez, their starting cornerback in Super Bowl LX. They found quality depth in Marte Mapu, a DB from Sacramento State, who now plays inside linebacker and special teams. In the sixth round, the organization hit on LSU Kayshon Boutte. He has 33 receptions and 6 touchdowns on the season.

2024 NFL Draft

New England finished the 2023 season with a 4-13 record, which resulted in the 3rd overall draft pick. This season would be the last for Bill Belichick with the Patriots. Following the end of the season, the two sides agreed to go their separate ways. Jerod Mayo, a standout linebacker for the organization and later their inside linebackers coach, was hired as the team’s new head coach.

The Patriots selected QB Drake Maye with the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. A standout at North Carolina, Maye was up against USC QB Caleb Williams and LSU QB Jayden Daniels as the top QB in the draft. Williams had been the front-runner for the number one pick all year, but Jayden Daniels had a phenomenal college year, resulting in the Heisman Trophy. The Patriots hired Alex Van Pelt as their offensive coordinator, who would be tasked with developing Maye. In his rookie season, Maye struggled to find consistency. He finished the year with 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, throwing for over 2,200 yards.

The New England Patriots finished the season with a 4-13 record. Head coach Jerod Mayo was fired after one season.

2025 NFL Draft

Mike Vrabel spent the 2024 season as a consultant for the Cleveland Browns. He’d been fired as head coach of the Tennessee Titans the year prior. In essence, it seemed as if the stars aligned for Vrabel to replace Mayo as head coach of the Patriots for the 2025 season. The impact was felt immediately during the 2025 NFL Draft. The Patriots found starters in LT Will Campbell, LG Jared Wilson, and SS Craig Woodson. They also found impact players with RB TreVeyon Henderson and WR Kyle Williams.

In short, the Patriots didn’t miss on their evaluations. They were patient, let the board come to them, and trusted their scouts. It was what made the New England Patriots so successful under HC Bill Belichick and QB Tom Brady. They found key players throughout the NFL Draft.

With the New England Patriots set to take on the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX, you can make the argument that their success in the NFL Draft is why they’re back in the Championship hunt.
