Steelers vs. 49ers; 2023 Season Opener Will be Officiated by Alex Kemp

On September 5, we learned who will be the referee for the Pittsburgh Steelers’ home opener versus the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday in the 2023 regular season. According to an NFL announcement, Alex Kemp will officiate the game on Sunday at Acrisure Stadium.

This is an exciting season for NFL fans. Especially those who love to interact with their favorite teams. There’s always something new for those who want to shake up their sports betting experience and try something different. Alex Kemp to Officiate Steelers vs. 49ers

Kemp joined the NFL in 2014 as a side judge and was elevated to referee for the 2018 season after Jeff Triplette and Ed Hochuli announced their retirements. He is the officiating veteran Stan Kemp’s son. Since Kemp hasn’t officiated a Steelers game in a while, it’s likely that his name is unfamiliar to some fans. The last game Kemp called that included Pittsburgh was the Steelers’ home game versus the Colts in December 2020.

In a recent piece, Rick Gosselin said that Kemp and his teams have officiated 78 games overall. His teams saw 12.7 penalties on average per game, averaging 109.8 penalty yards. For Kemp-led teams, the most common penalty is offensive holding. Kemp’s teams have called 1,034 penalties over the previous five seasons, 193 of which were for offensive holding, according to In the last five NFL seasons, there had been an average of 12.4 penalties called each game for 104.1 yards, as Gosselin notes. So maybe Steelers and 49ers fans both can prepare for some yellow laundry on the field at Acrisure Stadium on Sunday.

As was previously noted, Kemp officiated the Steelers’ last game in 2020. There were a total of 15 penalties called for 132 yards in the Steelers vs. Colts game. Of those 15, four penalties were for offensive holding. Ouch. Additionally, Gosselin claims that in the games he has officiated thus far, home teams have a 41-37 record. The Steelers are the host team, so there’s that.
