The champions of the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC) are determined in the two conference finals. These two teams then meet in the grand final, the Super Bowl.

In the 58th Super Bowl, the Kansas City Chiefs will face the San Francisco 49ers. The final of the American Football League takes place on Monday night. Both teams have already arrived in Las Vegas.

When is it being played and who is broadcasting?

Super Bowl Sunday is on 11 February this year. According to German time, the spectacle begins at midnight on 12 February. In Germany, RTL will broadcast the final on free-to-air TV for the first time. The streaming service DAZN will also be broadcasting live.

Who is playing this year?

The Kansas City Chiefs (AFC) and the San Francisco 49ers (NFC) have once again prevailed in the playoffs. It is a rematch of the final from four years ago, which the Chiefs won 31:20.

Kansas City is also the winner from the previous year and can become the first team since the New England Patriots 19 years ago to defend the title. It would be the fourth Super Bowl triumph overall for the Chiefs; the 49ers have won five times so far.

Which players are in the spotlight?

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is in the Super Bowl for the fourth time and is the NFL’s superstar following the retirement of Tim Brady. In 2020 and 2023, the 28-year-old Mahomes won the final, while in 2021 he and Kansas City were defeated by Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The second best-known player for the defending champions is Travis Kelce. The veteran is one of the best tight ends in the NFL and is now also known to non-football fans as the boyfriend of pop superstar Taylor Swift.

The 49ers are also peppered with exceptional players such as running back Christian McCaffrey. The story of quarterback Brock Purdy, who was the last player picked in the draft two years ago and is now in the Super Bowl, is particularly special, but also benefits from the playing system of his outstanding coach Kyle Shanahan.

Who is the favourite?

The bookmakers have San Francisco slightly ahead, but experience speaks in favour of Kansas City. In addition, the Chiefs knocked off the Miami Dolphins, the Buffalo Bills and above all the Baltimore Ravens in the playoffs. For their part, the 49ers made it pretty exciting against the Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Lions.

Super Bowl: Las Vegas wants to reinvent itself

The Super Bowl is being held in the Nevada desert for the first time. However, the sporting highlight in Las Vegas is only an intermediate step in the radical transformation of the gambling metropolis.

Who will perform during the half-time break?

Usher provides the show. Country star Reba McEntire sings the US national anthem, Post Malone “America the Beautiful”. R&B artist and activist Andra Day presents the song “Lift Every Voice and Sing”. Gwen Stefani, former singer of the band No Doubt, will perform at the pregame party (TikTok Tailgate).

How expensive is a commercial?

The price level here is stable. A 30-second advert will again cost 7.0 million dollars. In 1967, for Super Bowl I, NBC charged 37,500 dollars, CBS 42,500. This year, a brewery, a car manufacturer, a travel web portal and a mobile phone company are among those advertising.

The romance between the Grammy winner and Kelce is the storyline surrounding the “Big Game”. Also because the American is performing in Tokyo on the day before the final, but Swift is expected to be back on time. This was even announced by the Japanese embassy in the USA. Her participation, even if only in the VIP grandstand, takes the mega-event characterised by gigantism to a new level. And the Republicans fear that they could once again interfere in the presidential election campaign on the fringes of the event and campaign in favour of the Democratic incumbent Joe Biden.

The great fear of Taylor Swift

She won’t be on the pitch, but Taylor Swift is still the big topic of conversation ahead of the Super Bowl next weekend. Conservatives are panicking and paranoid.

Right-wing circles in the USA fear that Taylor Swift could once again support US President Biden in the election campaign, as she did in 2020, and are stirring up a mood against the singer and her partner.

It’s the coronation mass of the NFL season. Defending champion Kansas City Chiefs against the San Francisco 49ers. There’s not much else going on in American football at the moment. However, in the run-up to the Super Bowl on 11 February in Las Vegas, it’s not about the players, but about a singer: Taylor Swift.

No, the superstar will not be performing as a half-time act. She won’t be singing the national anthem either, but simply sitting in a VIP box in the stadium and cheering on her boyfriend, Chiefs’ tight end Travis Kelce.

But that alone is causing panic and paranoia among Donald Trump’s supporters. Because the presidential election is on 5 November. And although Swift has yet to utter a single political syllable this year, the Trump faithful sense danger.
