Will the Viking’s Draft top QBs?

Other

The Vikings are in a tough position to draft their QBs. They had already bid farewell to their star QB, Kirk Cousins, signed a $10 million bridge starter, and acquired a second first-round pick to pair with their own spot at #11.

The Minnesota Vikings know better that the path to a franchise QB is rarely smooth, but with minimal resources committed to finding a QB, the question remains: Will the Vikings draft to QBs?

The Current QB Roster

Currently, the Vikings have a seasoned QB roster. The current QB players for the Minnesota Vikings are Sam Darnold, Jaren Hall at #16, and Nick Mullens at #12. However, they need a new QB due to the Achilles injury of their star player Kirk Cousins, along with the poor performances by the quarterbacks after Cousins went down for the season.

Draft Strategy and QB Prospects

The Vikings are planning to draft a new QB by the first or second round of the draft. They are looking for a deep draft in the early rounds, so they may need to move up their players to get their guy. Fans are betting on Maye or Penix Jr as part of the starting QB roster on sites like Comeon, creating more expectations.

The current QB prospects for the upcoming draft are:

  • Drake Maye: 21 years old and standing at 6’4” and 230 lbs, Maye is one of the expected QBs to be drafted by the Vikings. He has delivered exceptional performance in the last 2 seasons, leading UNC to a 17-9 record, but has been less efficient this season.

  • Jayden Daniels: Fans speculate that there is a much better chance of landing Daniels. He is a 2023 Heisman Trophy winner and the first player in Football Bowl Subdivision history to run for more than 200 yards and pass for more than 350 yards.

  • JJ McCarthy: Spending 3 seasons with the Michigan program with an impressive 27-1 record, he is ranked the #5 QB and #22 overall prospect by CBS. There are speculations regarding a more favourable choice for McCarthy as the QB for the Vikings this season.

However, the Vikings have already considered drafting Drake Maye and Michael Penix Jr. in the new PFF mock draft. They’re pretty much great picks since Maye is given #9 and they have to only give up a 4th-rounder. Since Maye is at #9, they have to only focus on #23, for which Michael is the best.

Fan and Management Expectations

Fans and the management have an equal view of whether to focus on drafting QBs instead of filling other positions.

“It’s a very deep class. But I do think you have to be ready for every scenario. If there are elite players at premium positions on the board, I don’t think you’re supposed to reach or force or anything like that. It’s just not what I believe, all the while understanding that [quarterback] is the most important position in the sport. So, it’s calculating both those things at the same time,” says Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, the general manager of the Minnesota Vikings.

Fans also speculate that the Vikings will consider Drake Maye for their starting roster, but since they already own #11 and #23, they are foreseeing a trade for a QB in the future.
