2024 Senior Bowl Game Recap

2024 Senior Bowl

The 2024 Senior Bowl is in the books. The National team knocked off the American squad 16-7. South Carolina QB Spencer Rattler was named overall game MVP despite playing on the losing team. Rattler was 4/4 for 65 yards and a TD.

Washington State CB Chau Smith-Wade recorded three solo tackles and two interceptions. A bad spot cost him an 86-yard pick-six.

Unfortunately, the game was marred by who didn’t play. The week started with 138 players between both rosters and only 97 suited up on game day. The attrition was so bad that Florida State DL Braden Fiske had to switch teams on the day of the game. This isn’t even including numerous players who shut it down mid-game.

We heard all week about the two big quarterbacks in the game, Washington’s Michael Penix and Bo Nix of Oregon. Penix didn’t play and Nix played two series. This left us with Notre Dame’s Sam Hartman attempting 25 passes.

Almost every player that would be considered a first-round pick opted out of playing in the game. Most of these are likely what can be called “agent’s decisions”.

This now marks the second straight year of this sort of roster collapse on gameday.

I mentioned earlier about Spencer Rattler as the game MVP. Rattler was the only passer that looked like he belonged. Rattler played one drive and threw a great pass for a score to Georgia’s Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint. Bo Nix had a three-and-out on his first series. And then led a short TD drive on his second.

On top of Chau Smith-Wade, I thought North Carolina LB Cedric Gray played well with seven tackles (four solos) and a PBU for the National team. Oregon safety Evan Williams picked off Joe Milton (QB/Tennessee) in the endzone. The aforementioned Braden Fiske finished with four tackles, 1.5 TFLs, and a half sack.

Mississippi State LB Nathaniel Watson finished the game with seven tackles for the American squad. Cal LB Jackson Sirmon notched five tackles and a PBU. While Louisville CB Jarvis Brownlee, Jr. picked off an errant Sam Hartman pass.
